Drove in the Phaeton up the Wnion to Bryn [Caderon]; on our way we left our lunch at Bont Newydd station and fished down to there at 2 o`clock; we had caught about 50 small trout and 1 sewin; we saw a great many good trout but the water and weather was too bright for fishing; we fished till 7 o`clock down to the ford.... the sun was very hot..... Saturday August 19 1871 .. A fine day but rather windy.... breakfasted at the lodge at 8 o`clock and then started for Tal y llyn in the phaeton.... wanted to get some fishing.... the lake was an excellent order with a very strong W. wind blowing; the trout rose well but were very difficult to hook.... Monday August 21st The river was in excellent order for fishing today but the sun was too bright... I got up at 6.30 and tried the pools near the house before breakfast for sea trout but were not successful although we rose 4... to Hengert Ucha to fish down; the fish rose very badly... at lunch which we had by Bont Llyn Rhaeadr we caught a sea trout; the only one we saw all day .... we sent up balloons this evening and lighted up the Torrent walk with magnesium wire .... Trout 7.9 Sea Trout 1 Eels 2

Tuesday August 22nd ....started for Tal y llyn. I walked all the way as they did not catch me up till I was by the lake .... we went out to fish at 11 o`clock; there was hardly any breeze but soon a brisk wind blew from the south west; the trout rose badly till about 4 o`clock, and later on in the evening when the wind dropped a little the fish rose well and we had good sport; we fished up till dark Trout 21 1lbs 2oz These fish were nearly all caught with the Red Ant

Wednesday August 23rd The wind was blowing very strongly the whole day from the south west and it was a good fishing day... began fishing soon after the fish rising a little in the morning and I caught a very fine fish which weighed exactly a pound.... went on fishing again after lunch but the fish rose badly and very short but we managed to catch 5 .. We fished till 9..30 then went in to dinner trout 11 1lb.

Thursday August 24th It was very cloudy this morning when I first got up and its soon began to rain.... breakfasted at 8 o`clock went out in one boat to fish... the wind was very changeable when we began fishing but we managed to catch 6 small trout between us in about half an hour when a regular hurricane with buckets of rain set in and when we had been driven
to the bottom of the lake resort shelter in a farm... After waiting an hour at Towyn we sailed to Aberystwyth doing the greater part of our journey on a truck but we found it cold although fine Trout 6

Tuesday August 29th 1871 .... breakfast at 7.30 and 8 o`clock started up to Llyn Crogennan to fish there, taking our coracle with us. The wind was very high from the south and it was a bright sky. It was too windy to use the coracle for fishing but I got into it and quite unintentionally I was carried right across the lake and arrived safely at the side. The wind throughout the day was very gusty and shifted more to the Eaast; the fish did not rise at all and Lloyd alone caught two small ones trout lake 2

Monday August 5th at 8 o`clock this morning we started to Talyllyn butd it looked a bad morning and the rain came down heavily. I walked up to the Cross Foxes...The rain did not last all day; we began fishing at 10 o`clock and the trout rose well in the morning and by lunch we had 18 fair fish; it was a beautiful day for fishing aa nice breeze from SW and not rain enough to do harm. After lunch we continued having good sport catching most fish at the far end of the lake by the Rushes. In the evening the fish stopped rising so we gave up at 6 o`clock. We had a very wet drive home and were thoroughly drenched when we got in. Trout (Talyllyn) 41 17 [and 3/4] pounds.

Tuesday August 6th As the river was in very good order we determined to fish it; the Minor fishing about the house while I walked up to the mill above Bont Issa and began there. It was a very showery day but the trout rose badly and I had poor sport throughout the day. I fished till six o`clock and left off below Bont Newydd, and had caught 35 trout. Thursday August 9th or 8th A fine day. We breakfasted as usual at 7.30 and the Minor started to fish the river while I walked up to Llyn Cynwych. As the lake was calm I began fishing for perch and was soon in a shoal and caught one, but I had to give it up as I could not keep the boat in the same place not having a rope. I searched hard all day, both for trout and perch. I rose four trout and in the evening lost a couple of perch. The minor had a good day`s sport on the river killing 450 Trout including one Sewin..... Trout 150 Perch 1

Friday august 9th .... at 7 o`clock this morning we hardly could make up our minds to go to Talyllyn as it was such a bright morning; however we started about 8 o`clock and I walked all the way there reaching Tyn y Cornel at 945. Before lunch I fished in a boat by myself while the Minor and Wynne fished in another. Throughout the day the wind was very shifty and the weather was too bright to expect to do much. However the Minor and I stuck to it till 6 o`clock and managed to kill 16; but none were over 3/4lb. Trout (Talyllyn) 16

Saturday August 10th It was very wet this evening with a strong southerly wind and it was a dull day. The Minor and I both fished the river as it soon came down a heavy flood. I walked up to the Big Pool but did little there only getting 1 Sea Trout with worm. I walked round Bontnewydd Bridge and had little sport till I met the Minor in a Salmon which Wynne had hooked with a worm in the Ford Pool and the Minor had played him on the small trout rod nearly 100 yards down the river until he was hung up in the bushes. The fish was still evidently on but it was a fearful place to land him and we saw it was quite an impossibility to do so..... in the evening when the river was sufficiently clear we put on flies and about 7 o`clock I killed 2 sea trout, one about 1lb in the Ford Pool: we also rose several others.... Trout 87. Sea trout 10 = 97. Total number of trout killed during the week. At Talyllyn 57. Llyn Cynwych [sic] Perch 1. Wnion river; trout 381, Sea trout 10 Grand total 368 Trout 1 Perch

Tuesday 13th August At 9 o`clock this morning I fished on the river beginning at the ford and working up to the big pool.. The river was in fair order and I managed to kill 3 Sea trout before lunch and some nice trout: after lunch I was fishing near the house and killed another Sea trout... the Minor went up to Llyn Cynwych and killed 6 Perch and 6 trout. Wednesday August 14th A very bright and hot day. The Minor and i decided to try the Perch at Llyn Cynwych so we started up there and had a dingy on the lake. We fished with minnow but I fancy our bait was too large. The Perch to our great surprise bit shockingly badly and we several times tried the trout with no better success. I myself had very bad luck loosing [sic] some nice perch and although I stayed up there till 8.30 i did not catch a single fish all day. The minor rose two very good fish late in the evening but he only got one trout ..... Perch 5 Trout 1

Thursday August 15th We had breakfast at 7.30 and about 8 o`clock started to Talyllyn; ... met griffiths and walked with him to Minffordd where the Minor picked us up. There was a very nice fishing breeze on the Lake the greater part of the day: we rose some very good fish when we began in the morning and those we did get were a nice size, 3 weighing 2 lbs. Our people arrived about 130 and we had a very jolly picnic.In the afternoon. the fish rose very badly and the wind was very shifty: the Minor..... fished till 7 o`clock and then went home at the end of the day we had caught: The Minor 8. Friday August 16th The Minor and i went up by the 8.40 train this morning to Drws y Nant to see Mr Price Lloyd... we then fished down the river until about 1.30 when the Griffith met us having come from Dolserau as we had intended to have a picnic at Llyn Cynwych but the weather prevented us. We all fished at Pont issa for eels and then walked home .... and afterwards as it was a beautiful moonlight night we set up Balloons Trout 63 Sea trout 1 Eels 3

Saturday August 17th A very fine and hot day. This morning I walked into Dolgelley and met the Minor about 10 o`clock at Llyn Cynwych walking up there. There was a nice breeze on the lake but we did no good all day. It was wonderful to see the amount of Red Ants at the water towards evening: the trout rose fairly at them but would not look at our Flies. We bathed in the evening before we went down and it was very jolly..... Perch 1
Fish caught during the week:-Wnion river. Trout 108 Sea trout 5. Eels 3 = 116. Talyllyn 15 trout 7 perch 12 = trout 22 perch 12 = 150.. Grouse killed on the 12th by RWLE & ME 10 . Snipe 2, Hare 1. 13 head evening before we went down and it was very jolly..... Perch 1

Wednesday August 21st The Minor and I started for Talyllyn soon after 7 o`clock. It was a beautiful morning, rather too bright for fishing, but there was a nice Southerly breeze. We both fished in the same boat and had bad luck before lunch. The Minor "breaking" in two fish and losing several others; I also was unlucky but then the fish rose shyly, owing to the brightness of the water. After lunch we did a little better..... the fish which we caught were a fair size averaging about 1/2lb each Trout 15

Thursday August 22nd We had breakfast at 5.30 and drove to Abergwynant Bridge where the otter hounds awaited us. Colonel Pryce threw off at the Bridge and immediately the hounds got on the drag of an otter which they hunted up stream: the scent was very good and it was not long before the otter was viewed by "Dick" but to our great disappointment she gained a large stronghold of rocks from which it seemed quite impossible to bolt her although the terriers were marking her not far off. We then drew the stream farther up without success and also had a long walk to Llyn Crogennan where we found old traces of an otter. We walked back to the rocks and immediately a lot of men began working with crowbars, sledge-hammers etc to move the rocks: I ran down to to Abergwynant to fetch fresh hounds but I am sorry to say the otter shifted to a place where it was impossible to get her out, so we had lunch which Mamma brought up and gave the otter up. We drove back to Dolserau about 3 o`clock and the Minor and I went out on the river till 6 o`clock and caught Trout 41

The water was very clear, but I expected to do better than I did, only caching 4 eels so I gave up at 3 o`clock and walked home and met the Minor fishing at the Big Pool. We had a very jolly bathe and fished towards Dolserau. The otter hounds had no sport. The Minor caught the sewin in the Big Pool Trout 32 Eels 6 Sea Trout 1

The water was very clear but I expected to do better than I did only caching 4 eels; so I gave up at 3 o`clock and walked home and met the Minor fishing at the Big Pool. We had a very jolly bath and fished towards Dolserau. The otter hounds had no sport. The Minor caught the seawin in the Big Pool. Trout 32 Eels 6 Sea Trout 1

Saturday August 24th A very close day and fine. We hardly knew where to fish today but we decided to stick to the river, the Minor fishing for small trout about Dolserau while I walked up to the Big Pool and there caught a very nice Sewin (9 oz.) with worm. I then went on to the Lugog Pools and saw some splendid fish in the deep pools and a Salmon which bit my worm twice, but of course the fish was very shy, and I only got two trout 1/4lb and 7oz. besides small ones. I walked back to meet the Minor..... met him on the river when I went to pay after 6 o`clock at the Ford. He had caught a great number of small ones - with Wynne, also a large Eel. Trout 161 Sea trout 1 Eels 3 Total killed during the week. Grouse 4 (Bob and H Browne) Snipe 2 Talyllyn Trout 15 Wnion - trout 234 Sea trout 2 Eels 9
