They have brought down an enormous mass of rock and have extended it considerably While we were there fragments of rock and gravel were continually coming down ...Gorse in bloom and a single flower on one of the hawkweeds ... tells me they had 12F frost at Roe Wen morning of 31 Dec 13. Find live Pholadidae in piece of wood from the submerged forest. Pholas candida (young 1/3 inch) and Xylophaga dorsalis. This is the first I have found [of?] Xylophaga dorsalis

Epiphany 12th day Hail showers with intermittent sunshine very cold [wind?] strong NW - white Sea-horses in Tal y fan [!] and hills beyond are white. Walked to Llanrhos in the afternoon.... See only the common groundsel and daisy bloom in the hedgerows. Several small flocks of chaffinches both hen and cock birds....

7 Jan wed Hail during the night 6-7 8am. 38F. WNW Fine & sunny forenoon but clouds overin the afternoon and gets very chilly. Work at [Glain] Orme. Still a few rosebuds and one full bloom. Grass on [Teplity] of good quality. A few [Mapareyons] plantsin bloom:- Camanula frugites hirsuta, Acuna Novoe Selandica, and Linaria cymbalaria. Armeria [juncea] and an Iberis (white) a single bloom cluster on each.

In todays Daily Mirror and other papers there is an account of a terrific volcanic disaster in Japan; there has been an eruption at Sakushima in the Gulf of Kagushima. 70,000 at least are reports as killed and missing [toriad papur a deiagrm pensil o`r ffrwydriad ac o`r blodyn eirlys]

A very grey and misty day .....[aneglur] walk in the afternoon on the West Shore with Robert Jones. We go as far as the Black Rock(Black Shale?) and look at the fine examples of striated glacial boulders. and [sic] the huge black boulder, crowded with initials and dates that have been cut on its surface the earliest date I can find is 1878. Robet explains to me, the method the gulls employ to break open the cockle shells. Flying to a hight [sic] above hard [tanlinellwyd] ground with the cockle in its bill, the bird drops it, instantly descending after it. In this way the shell is broken and the gull is able to devour the soft body of the mollusc. This process Robert has witnessed over and over. We picked up several of these broken shells - on the sands this afternoon. Find young whelks in the egg capsules on the tideline.

Apply gas-lime to clear out wire-worm - 2 tons to the acre & let it lie [ fallow] till next spring. Gas lime is injurious to vegetation as well as insecct life. Its poisonous properties disappear in about 2 months. Best done in autumn and winter.

The snowdrops ar blooming on Phyllis & Lauries grave [Llanrhos]... I notice 6 lambs at Fferm ....In the afternoon I see a strange bird in William`s field (between the avenue & back of Rhoslyn)... [disgrifiad, ac ar ochr y dudalen "lluno bibydd goesgoch ggyda`r capsiwn Identified by WR Jones as a RedShank.. considers its appearance in this location of great interes

A beautiful sunny morning; tho the eastern sky was rosey at sunrise. Clouds over in the afternoon. Slight drizzling rain tonight, W. At Glain Orme Mr Hopps calls my attention to the greenfly on the buds of one of the rosebushes. There are only a few but they are active - most unusual at this time of year conssidering we have twice experienced over 6º of frost.

Overcast and showery. See the Greater Black Backed Gull out on the sea opposite Brinkbourne House.A flock of Herring and Black headed Gulls are on the shore at the [water`s] edge, but the great BLack backed is all alone on the water.
