July 2nd Wednesday Started early over to the Mawddach, and found the river high and dirty, but it had run down a good deal. Commenced at Gethigemlyn [sic] with worm, but did no good there, so crossed the bridge at Tyn y groes and went down to a pool below to a pool below Bryn Cemlyn where I caught a fine Sewin. After lunch the river was just clear enough for fly, so i put on a large black doctor and in the Long flat, I rose a fine Salmon, but could not get him to come a second time. Caught a Sewin at the Railings, and after fishing up to Meeting of the waters, I turned and went below Bryn Cemlyn, and in the rocky pool I hooked a fine grilse which gave me grand sport, and I was very glad when I had him in. He took a Thunder & Lightning fly. I tried a pool or two afterwards, and then walked home across the hill, as I was anxious to be back early .... Heavy rain fell this evening.

Monday January 6th The Minor and I started by the 8.40 train to Coreen to stay with Charlie Wynne at Rûg to have 3 days shooting. As usual it rained hard all day and quite prevented us shooting any coverts but after lunch we had a walk after Rabbits but saw few and the Minor and I about 4 o`clock went with Pierce Williams to a wood to wait for pigeons. It was a good night for it as it was blowing hard and a great many came into the wood but we only killed one..... Pheasant 1 a fine Japanese cock snipe 1 wood pigeon 1 Rabbit 1

Drove in the Phaeton up the Wnion to Bryn [Caderon]; on our way we left our lunch at Bont Newydd station and fished down to there at 2 o`clock; we had caught about 50 small trout and 1 sewin; we saw a great many good trout but the water and weather was too bright for fishing; we fished till 7 o`clock down to the ford.... the sun was very hot..... Tuesday August 15th 1871 it was cloudy in the morning but turned out a beautiful day but a great deal too hot to shoot on a moor... 8.36 train to Llanderfel [sic.] we found the birds very wild and it was the worst day possible for the dogs as there was no scent....we had lunch at 2 o`clock and then had shot 8 and a half brace.... after lunch the birds lay better and by 5 o`clock headshot 15 brace grouse for guns 23 and a half brace.

The river was a very good colour for fishing but was not very high.... I went up the river and spun a minnnow but had no sport.... the minor caught 1 sea trout with a fly and rose several more Sea Trout 1

Saturday August 19 1871 .. A fine day but rather windy.... breakfasted at the lodge at 8 o`clock and then started for Tal y llyn in the phaeton.... wanted to get some fishing.... the lake was an excellent order with a very strong W. wind blowing; the trout rose well but were very difficult to hook.... Trout (lake) 14. Total trout during the week: 114. Sea Trout 2. Grouse 23[.5] brace

Monday August 21st The river was in excellent order for fishing today but the sun was too bright... I got up at 6.30 and tried the pools near the house before breakfast for sea trout but were not successful although we rose 4... to Hengert Ucha to fish down; the fish rose very badly... at lunch which we had by Bont Llyn Rhaeadr we caught a sea trout; the only one we saw all day .... we sent up balloons this evening and lighted up the Torrent walk with magnesium wire .... Trout 7.9 Sea Trout 1 Eels 2

Tuesday August 22nd ....started for Tal y llyn. I walked all the way as they did not catch me up till I was by the lake .... we went out to fish at 11 o`clock; there was hardly any breeze but soon a brisk wind blew from the south west; the trout rose badly till about 4 o`clock, and later on in the evening when the wind dropped a little the fish rose well and we had good sport; we fished up till dark Trout 21 1lbs 2oz These fish were nearly all caught with the Red Ant

Wednesday August 23rd The wind was blowing very strongly the whole day from the south west and it was a good fishing day... began fishing soon after the fish rising a little in the morning and I caught a very fine fish which weighed exactly a pound.... went on fishing again after lunch but the fish rose badly and very short but we managed to catch 5 .. We fished till 9..30 then went in to dinner trout 11 1lb.

Thursday August 24th It was very cloudy this morning when I first got up and its soon began to rain.... breakfasted at 8 o`clock went out in one boat to fish... the wind was very changeable when we began fishing but we managed to catch 6 small trout between us in about half an hour when a regular hurricane with buckets of rain set in and when we had been driven
to the bottom of the lake resort shelter in a farm... After waiting an hour at Towyn we sailed to Aberystwyth doing the greater part of our journey on a truck but we found it cold although fine Trout 6

Tuesday August 29th 1871 .... breakfast at 7.30 and 8 o`clock started up to Llyn Crogennan to fish there, taking our coracle with us. The wind was very high from the south and it was a bright sky. It was too windy to use the coracle for fishing but I got into it and quite unintentionally I was carried right across the lake and arrived safely at the side. The wind throughout the day was very gusty and shifted more to the Eaast; the fish did not rise at all and Lloyd alone caught two small ones trout lake 2

Friday September 1st ....shooting ground which joins the sea and overlooks Borth (Cors Fochno?) the weather was close and it rained a good deal in the morning ..... We met Mr [Dire] at Llanfihangel.... the coveys were far from numerous it was rather a nuisance.... most of the birds we found were most wretchedly small, no doubt on account of the heavy rains and bad weather and taking into consideration that the coveys were small and the shooting not very good, our bag was small. Landrails were rather numerous but the difficulty was to get them up... Partriges 37. Land rails 6. Hares 2. Rabbits 2. Total head 47. 4 guns

Saturday September 2nd We started about 9.30 for our shooting ground not far from Peithyll.... We soon found a large covey in standing corn but lost some birds on account of back scent. The sun soon came rather hot and as we only found 3 coveys before lunch we had not much sport with the partriges. Hares were plentiful, and we found some landrails. We llunched at 10 o`clock at a farm and afterwards found some fine coveys of 18,12 and 10 birds` being much larger birds than those shot yesterday.... the d dogs were rather knocked up for want of water as we were in a very dry country... through Gogerddan Partridges 27. Landrails 9. Hares 6. Rabbits 2. Grand total 85 head of game. Lake trout 2

Tuesday September 5th... reached Dolgelley about 10.30. As the rivers were in such good order I walked to Llanelltyd bridge and fished up the Mawddach..... The water was in a very dirty state being much discoloured by mine water. I could not rise a sewin so I walked up to the Precipice Walk and round by Nannau Lake home...Lloyd went out with a gun but only shot a Land rail. A fine day. Landrail 1
