..The wind was North: but the weather was fine...went out shooting in two parties: riding to Llandrillo...had to go a long way to our beat on the mountain...The walking was very rough and the moor on the side of a steep mountain (called the Si?r?ca?). After lunch there was a rare good scent: and we should have had some pretty shooting had not the birds been so wild. We gave up shooting about six : and rode to Dale from Llandrillo...Grouse 14. Snipe - 1. Mr Robertson and Mr Ainslie shot 9 1/2 brace of grouse.

A showery day.The Minor and I went after grouse and partridges on Cefn C?st?? : but we wasted all our morning looking for partridges, and only finding one covey too small to shoot: so that by 2 o`clock we only had shot a grouse and partridge. It was a nasty day for shooting: the wet making the birds very wild> The shooting also, was not so good as on the other days. We did not go back to Dolserau this evening... Mr Robertson and Ainslie joining Mr Aitkin at Grogew shot 13 1/2 brace of partridges. Grouse -7. Partridges 6 Snipe.1.

The minor and I returned to Dolserau this morning by the 12 o`clock train and Wynne met us with the Phaeton at Bontnewydd. After lunch ...went up to Bontnewydd blackberrying and nutting : and we picked a great quantity...Dinner was at 7.30 and afterwards...all of us went out and took a wasp`s nest. It was a beautiful moonlit night.

The wnion was in good order for small flies: but the morning was very bright with a white frost...began fishing about 8 o`clock. I began at Dolserau and fished up to Bontnewydd while Wynne and the Minor drove up and fished down. I caught a fine sea trout of 2 lbs just below Bontnewydd and ... met the Minor for lunch at 2 o`clock : he had a small sea trout: but had lost 3 or 4 good ones. Small trout took well in the afternoon: but the sea trout did not take: we fished till we had over one hundred small trout : and then gave up. We played Billiards after dinner. Sea trout (3.(1)2lbs). We had breakfast at 7 o`clock: and started over to Talyllyn but we had not got far on the road when it started to rain hard. Wind. S.W....had a thorough ducking...went on the Lake...killing six..lunched ..I being we and cold, walked almost to the X Foxes: where the Phaeton overtook me.. We found the Weir in high flood and fit for worm - fishing: we began fishing about 4 o`clock and fishing till 7. we had grand sport: besides we lost a great many: and I had hold of something big. The eight sea trout weighed 5 3/4 lbs: we fished with fly al evening, except at one pool where I tried the Fly without success. Talyllyn Trout 6. Sea trout * (% 3/4 lbs). Trout 40.

It rained and blew very hard during the night: the river was in splendid order: and we went out about 8 o`clock...I put a Salmon Fly on. yellow body. and dark wing; and I hooked ... a Salmon [very detailed description of attempt] .. I hooked him at ten minutes to ten and I lost him at 10 minutes past eleven...the Salmon was certainly over ten pounds... drove right up the river and fished, but did not do much. The river fell very fast. Sea trout 4.

...started to Tyn-y-groes....from there we walked about 3 miles up the Eden and fished down...but the fish would not stir..fished right down to the Bridge near the junction before we had a rise!...I walked down to the Mawddach without changing my rod [from a small trout rod] and ...hooked a large salmon...[details of fishing attempt]...he was off...We saw numbers of fish jumping in this pool...we did not get home till 8 o`clock.

The Minor, Wynne and I got up at 5 o`clock: and made an early start to the Mawddach in order to fish before anyone else: we began fishing at 7.15: at the "Poacher`s Rock" and fished right up: but did no good all day: the river not being insuch good orderas yesterday: and the weather was cold and all aginst fishing. I rose 3 or 4 sea trout and caught one. We got up to the Stepping Stone Pool about 8 o`clock : and stayed there a long time watching the Salmon leaping at the Fall: one : a fish about 12 lbs: jumped right across the Fall on the rock: and lefted [sic] a quantity of scales there: he must have damaged himself badly. as we were very tired we did not fish later: but drove home...Sea trout 1.

An East wind: and very cold with showers of rain.The Minor and Wynne went above the "Falls" of the Mawddach...I fished the Wnion up to Bont Newydd, with small flies: the river very clear: from Bont Newydd I walked up to Bont Rhiodr: and caught a fine Brown trout in the pool above: soon after I met the Dypso-maniac minnow fishing upstream so quite spoiled my intended water, and I walked back to Dolserau and tried the river... without raising a Sea Trout. The weather was all against fishing: and the Minor and Wynne had only a dozen small fish. Trout 23 (1 - 1lb. caught on the Wnion.

It was a bright and sunny morning....The Squire .. took the Dolgelly CC to play against Bala...of course it rained hard..the Bala eleven did not turn up until 12 o`clock but kept us waiting ... we won with 50 against their 33...started home in pouring rain about 5.30 reaching Dolserau at 8. Wynne fished the Wnion and caught .Sea Trout 2.

A fine day....began fishing the Wnion at 6 o`clock but did not rise a single fish...breakfasted at 8.30, and George Bunbrey[?] and I drove to Llanelltyd and fished the Mawddach, while the Minor and Wynne fished the Wnion down from Drwsynant. The fish were unmovable on the Mawddach and I tried right up from Llanelltyd to the stepping stone pool without success, although I rose a good fish in the latter pool. The Minor and Wynne also had a bad day and only caught trout. 42.

...a good deal of rain fell during the morning, so after Wynne had started back to Eton by the 10.40 train the Minor and I went out fishing: beginning at Dolgun: the river came down in beautiful order for fly: but I never knew the Sea trout take so badly: and I only rose two in Dolgun ...till 2 o`clock. The Minor caught 22 small trout with worm in the Clwedog. We dined at 6 o`clock: and started by the 6.40 train from Bont Newydd to Glenluce

The river was in capital order, so we gave up the day to fishing. The Minor went to Castle Kennedy, but found the lake too dirty, and only rose one trout! I went ...to Cochran`s ...and rose a salmon immediately but he did not touch the fly...This was the only fish I met all day, and as rain came down quite heavily in the afternoon, it quite spoilt my chance... gave up about 6 o`clock. Ashley had no sport at all. Sea trout 3 - (1) 1 1/2 lbs)

Owing to the rain of last night and a very wet morning the river was high. We were to have gone a shooting picnic..but of course it was given up owing to the wet. Sir John Hay (who killed a salmon 11lbs yesterday) drove with me right up to Lin?? T?r?) the highest pool on the Luce: I fished the pool carefully for two hours...but he did not come...after lunch the river fell so low that ...we fished the two pools without moving a fish... I fished down to the Lower Rampart of the Craig...about 7 o`clock I hooked and lost a Grilse : and also rose a salmon. I had a four mile walk back to Glenluce. Ashley caught 8 Sea Trout. The Minor .2. Ashley had one of 3 lbs: and met several fish.

Another very fine day...started at 8.30 to shoot over Sli??iuefs . A better day could not have been chosen as we had a beautiful cool breeze from the sea nearly all day. Geordie... met us with the pointers. We began shooting at 9.45 and were unlucky with our birds which were wild on the stubbles and we did no execution till we were in a turnip field and by lunchtime at 1.30 we had 12 1/2 brace: the shooting was a good deal straighter in the afternoon: and we were lucky with our birds. Coveys were numerous and large - up to 20 birds: and the birds were strong. We shot till 6.45: and got back to Balhail at 7.15. Ashley shot 14 1/2 brace. our bag consisted of. Partridges 61. Snipe 7. Grouse 1. Rabbit 1 = 70 head.

A beautiful day: the sun being very hot... made a start about 9 o`clock to the Mark of Luce and Anabaglish: beats which were the boundary... began at Anabaglish and found two or three good coveys of partridges... When we lunched at 1.30 we had 14 brace: and afterwards we went on the Mark of Luce: but here ur birds flew across the boundary: and we did very little. In the evening we determined to shoot over the moor to Anabaglish to see if we could find birds on the stubble and we managed to stalk a few grouse... Partridges - 28. Grouse 8. Blackgame 8. Snipe 24. Jack Snipe 1 (?). Teal (a duck) 1. Hares 2 = 26 brace.

Ashley decided to give the dogs a rest today; and we beat a small covert for hares and shot the out-lying fields around it. We had two retrievers with us: and had a very jolly day, only the sun made it rather too hot...lucky with partridges.. but the hares were rather let off as we saw a great quantity...[lunch] did not begin shooting till 2.30..up to two turnip fields and found a covey of partridges and heaps of grouse. The Blackgame sat well especially when we drove them into the covert. We had to give up shooting at 5.15... Grouse 6. Blackgame 8. Partridges .43. Snipe 1. Hare 26 = 85 (Dirvavid &c)

In the afternoon we were not so lucky...the ground being very hilly and bad for marking...Ashley fished today at Loch M`fellie and killed 6 trout which weighed 8 1/2 lbs. M.E. and L.E Grouse 1. The Minor and I started by the 8.40 train to Castle Kennedy and it ought to have been a good day for lake fishing as there was a capital breeze: but the water was rather muddy and the trout would not rise at all, neither did we see many rising to the natural. The Minor caught three off the shore ... we could do nothing more .. returned to Glenluce by the 2.57 train and at 4 o`clock went out on the shore: and had some very good fun: we saw heaps of golden plover: but could not get very near them: we knocked over a good many : but picked up only seven...met Ashley driving home from Killfillan: where he had been shooting and had killed 40 brace: it being the first time he had walked without his wooden leg. The wind had changed more to the West: but the weather still kept fine: although it rained after six this evening. There was a high wind today: but the scent was wretchedly bad today, no doubt owing to the dust in the turnips...did not begin shooting until 11 o`clock ....by lunch time we had only 4 brace of birds: but we made our bag up afterwards to 19 1/2 brace: we gave up shooting at 5.45 having walked back to Balmoral. Jim Hay and Ashley shot 26 brace at Broome Park. M.E. and L.E. Grouse 1. Partridges 34. Hares 8. Wood Pigeon 1. Green Plover 1. = 39 = 19 1/2 brace....we played billiards to 12.30.

There was a raging flood in the Luce early this morning: the highest flood that has been known for 30 years. The Minor and I stayed here today in order to fish the river...too high and dirty all day for fly fishing....dined at 7 o`clock and started away by the 8.57 train to Dolserau ... M.E. and L.E.
