Wind due E. The Minor .. went to Talyllyn ...while I went with my gun to Blaenau...I began at the lower marsh and killed there a snipe and a hare. I also saw 4 snipe at a marsh above Blaenau and killed two: one a Jack snipe ...a long walk over the mountain ..where I have often seen snipe but today it was a great deal too wet and thick: and I did not see one.....saw a good many grouse but they were awfully wild...home by Cefn B?aid and saw 20 partridges...sent Kensie home to attend to the traps.. The Minor and I made an early start to Talyllyn...a nice breeze on the lake but it came on to rain with squalls of wind which was very cold from S.E. we did not see a single fish rise to the natural all day.. and the fish rose badly... after lunch the wind was so strong... left the lake about 3.30..A very windy night. The Wnion was in good order for Fly today...did not begin fishing before nine and the Minor was not out till 10 .. I fished the bathing pool and in about 10 minutes caught three fine sea trout, which the Minor landed for me: they weighed 1 1/2, 1 1/4 and 3/4 lbs. The Minor fished Dolgun and lost a good fish in the new pool ... we fished right up the river ... and did not meet a single fish, until I stuck in a salmon in one of the Heligog pools just above the viaduct...I was afraid he would leave the pool...Kensie soon had him in the landing net: he weighed 6 lbs: and was a fine fish. We fished till dark but did nothing more. The Squire left home this morning for Cyfarfa Castle so the Minor and I were again alone. Salmon 1. (6lbs). Sea trout 3. (1 1/2 lbs) (1 1/4 lbs). (3/4 lbs).

...heavy showers had kept the river in fine order, the Minor drove right up to Watts house, while I fished up from Dolgun: the worst was it was so bitterly cold: and I was not surprised that the sea trout would not rise ... we fished down to the viaduct: but had no luck, although the river was full of fresh water. We caught 36 small trout: the Minor caught the most of them. A bright moonlit night.

A frosty morning, but with all signs of rain as the sky was very led [sic] when the sun rose..up at the Mines about 8.30 with our guns as Chaplin had seen a covey of partridges and there were a lot of snipe about. The partridges we could not find, although some men...carting corn, had seen a fine covey in the field...Rain came on about nine o`clock, but it was only a drizzle but it came down pretty hard at times, and the wind blew hard from S.E. we went upto the Marsh and saw eight or nine snipe but we shot badly at them...By eleven o`clock we were very wet and determined to go home...the Torrent came down a raging flood in the afternoon about four o`clock: so we fished it fro small trout: and also Dolgun pool where the minor caught a small sea trout. darkness put an end to our fishing, and the rain came down with a vengeance about six o`clock. The river was very high this morning, and it was almost blowing a gale: however I determined to get up and have my last fish if possible.. I hooked a fish of 3 lbs which he landed for me and we did not catch another..no doubt...owing to the continuance of the flood as the fish were gaged [sic]..breakfast at 9.30...as my train did not leave till 1.30 I fished with fly for a couple of hours but the water was rather too high..Lunch was at 12.30.... I reached Oxford soon after nine.. Sea trout 1 (-3 lbs) Ford Pool . Trout 10. fishing in the morning.

[CONCLUSION] "The season this year was remarkable for the heavy floods which occurred, especially in August, when the weather was very wet. There is no doubt that these heavy floods were the reason why the sea trout and grilse would not take well: and instead of being a good season, as it might have been, it was one of the worst known. However, the Grilse and Salmon caught in the Wnion and Mawddach this season as a rule were a larger size than usual."

A most beautiful day: the sun shining brightly. Wind N.W....drove to the bottom of the hill: and walked up to Blaenaw, and commenced shooting at the marsh. We had a hard and long walk before lunch: as we went to the rocky covert on the hill: and saw three cocks there , one of which the Minor killed: on the marshes adjoining we killed four snipe .one a jack. Frank missed two woodcocks in the open, one at Blaenaw: otherwise we might have made a good bag....the Squire and Wynne had brought it [lunch] up to Cefn Braich, and we had it outside the Farm on a table....saw a covey of partridges of seven birds,...and the Minor killed one. We played [? raged] seven barrels at the hare; after which she succumbed!. We gave up shooting at 4.30....glad to find the Squire at the bottom of the hill waiting for us with the phaeton. A windy and cold day: but fine and inclined to frost. The Minor and I started by the 8.40 train to stay for three days shooting at Pale: we reached there by about 9.30 and started out with Mr Roberts to prowl about on the Crogeu moor - after grouse...the grouse were unapproachable, but I killed one by stalking round a knoll: I saw several hares and also a Woodcock...It was not easy to kill the birds driven at something like 40 miles an hour with the wind: but the Minor was pretty successful: the ladies came out for lunch but it was very cold for them. We gave up shooting about 4.30...Grouse 19. Hare 1. - Guns 3. H.R., M.E and L.E

..about 10 o`clock drove to Llandrillo, and went on the moors for the last drive: the grouse season closing tomorrow: ... it was a capital day for grouse driving as there was no wind, but the shooting except for Mr Robertson and [Mr]Wynn was not good. We had two drives before lunch and three after: and also took some small outlying coverts on our way down. A woodcock was seen on the heather but no one had a chance at it. We had, as yesterday, a good many dogs with us: and few birds were lost. After dinner we played Pool: ...Grouse.39. Pheasants 4. Partridges 4. Snipe 2. besides hares ... [6 guns]

There was a hard white frost, and it turned out a beautiful day for the covert shooting. there were the same guns as yesterday, and we began shooting about 10.45 and at Bryn?llyn : .. The Minor shot a Woodcock soon after we began: and we had grand sport with the pheasants in the covert, but only two hens. for each gun. were allowed in this covert, and as the cocks had been pretty well thinned, the other day, the greater proportion of the birds were hens. we had a jolly lunch... The cock covert which was shot after lunch had several woodcock in it: the walking was awful and I walked right through the middle of it: but I killed a cock and the Minor another also... It was late when we stopped shooting and were just in time to go to Pale and get our luggage and start for Dolserau by the 5.12 train.. dinner was at 7.30...It was a beautiful evening and froze hard. As far as I could gather the bag was. to six guns as follows: - Pheasants -75- Woodcock. 7. Partridges. 4. besides Hares and Rabbits = 106. head-

A glorious day; and very frosty...about 9 started out with Kensey [sic] to beat the Caeynwych [Caerynwch] side of the Torrent Walk, and the outlying coverts: the dogs we had with us were "Jock", who is very useful in covert, and a Spaniel bitch. Hera: who was quite useless. we flushed two cock in the Torrent walk: but did not kill: but I killed a Hare. In an outlying covert we flushed three cock: and we each killed one, and the Minor killed the other later on. We then worked onto the marsh below the mines: and killed four snipe there out of six: three of these were"Jacks." The Squire here brought us up our lunch: having ridden "Jack " up ...up to the Mines in the afternoon ...only saw a couple of snipe up there, but on our way up we flushed a fine covey of partridges of 8 or 9 birds: but we missed them...Returned home by the Torrent walk: where I flushed a cock: but did not kill...The Caery??ch [Caerynwch] tenants beat for us nearly all day, and we gave them the hare...Woodcock - 3, Snipe 5. A very fine and frosty day. .. started to beat our side of the Torrent Walk and adjoining coverts: we had John Ellis out today to assist Kensie to beat...flushed a cock and a snipe; at both of which I had a shot but missed. The Minor killed a Cock higher up and we flushed another....sent Kensey [sic] and John to beat the covert towards us...they flushed 3 cock: which never came down where we were posted. ... After lunch we took a long walk over the moor behind Caeynwch [Caerynwch] hill, and saw lots of grouse and a fine covey of partridges, which we could not get near. I killed a snipe but missed two or three others.: and it was dark when we returned home...it froze very hard this evening, and there was a beautiful sunset. Woodcock 1. Snipe 1. I also killed a fine Sparrow hawk.

The wind changed a little to the West, and there was a slight thaw all day: and very dull and misty. We started out shooting about 9.45: and commenced at John Ellis` cottage where the Minor killed a Cock: afterwards we were delayed a long time by Jack killing one of Captain Hill`s sheep: and we had to send for him, and settled with him very amicably. Afterwards we went to Perith-Llwyddion seeing 7 cock before 1.30: and the Minor killed two others. I knocked over a snipe.... The Squire brought our lunch...saw 3 or 4 snipe and two more Cock: but really it came on so dark early in the afternoon that we gave up shooting, and waited in a wood for Magpie`s [sic] coming to roost: and killed two and wounded two others. A gloomy and damp day: wind in the West: but, except a little rain in the morning, it kept tolerably fine all day. We started out at 9.30: and went to Bryn -bras. farm: where killed a cock, and we then went right up in front of Caerynwch : where...we did not find a cock. But on Caerynwch hill in an isolated bog with a small piece of covert, "Meg" pointed and a cock was flushed, which we knocked over: we then went over to the Iron Mines and killed a couple of Jack Snipe and at 1.30 lunched at the Cross Foxes...went on Caeynwch [sic] moor, after the covey of partridges I saw there last week: but we could not find them, but beating homewards , and till it was quite dark: we killed three Jack snipe and a Grouse: seeing two more Jill Snipe and a large ?ack [pack?] of grouse. The grouse was a solitary hen and the Minor felt justified in killing it....The Squire went away today to Wolverhampton... Woodcock. 2. Snipe-5. Grouse 1.

Only two Woodcock were seen: and nobody had a chance at them. We came into lunch at 1.30 : and shot till 4 o`clock. I do not know the exact bag, but I believe it was about 140 Head. including. Pheasants (nearly all cocks). Hares, rabbits and a few partridges. Dinner was a 7.30: and afterwards a glee party came from Corwen: and sang in the Hall. Afterwards 5 of us played Pool, till 12.30.

[too?] bare with not enough underwood. I do not know what the bag was. As we shot till past 4 o`clock: and had to walk two miles back to Trig: of course the Minor and I could not catch our train: but telegraphed home that we should arrive by the first train tomorrow....
