...we had to walk to Dolserau. we had breakfast at 9.30...we began shooting about 11 o`clock, and shot over the Big covert before lunch and Dolgwarthog afterwards. We had a good many beaters out, and two Sussex Spaniels which Smith had sent. As usual, although we saw plenty of cock. they managed to give us the slip, although we placed the guns as well as we could. On Dolgarrog we only saw one bird, but also a few pheasant. During the day I think we saw 15 cock and only killed one! the coverts were awfully thick. Hares were tolerably plentiful , but these we spared....It came on to rain hard this evening....Woodcock .1. A fine but windy day....drove to Hengwrt, to have a days shooting with Smith and Nicholson...there were supposed to be some pheasants, but we only saw one....Nicholson killed the only Woodcock seen all day. after lunch Smith left us and we three went down to the Marshes for snipe, but here again we were unlucky as we beat both sides of the river; but owing to the high tide the snipe, the snipe had shifted: we saw a few duck...started home about 5 o`clock. Wynne was with us all day. Woodcock 1. Snipe 2. W Duck.1. Rabbits. 2. Hare 1. (Hengwrt)

A showery and cold day. Wind: N.W. The Minor and I started out shooting about 9.15: and began just below the big covert and beat up the "dingle" to Perith Llwgddion : we did not find a cock till we reached the latter place: when two were flushed. one of which the Minor killed, and I missed the other: we were very unfortunate as we could not find the bird anywhere...the Squire brought our lunch up to the Cottages and afterwards we walked right onto Caerynwch hill...killed a Cock. The Minor here left me and went over Caerynwch hill, while I went to the wood below the cottages: and flushed a cock but did not get a shot...The Minor was with John Ellis and brought home a brace of partridges and a snipe. It was fine in the morning, but came on to rain hard in the afternoon. Frank , the Minor and I started out about 9.15 : and beat up the Caeynwch [Caerynwch] side of the Torrent Walk and found a Cock. which the Minor and I killed between us: we found but two snipe on the marsh below the Mines: but the Minor killed one. We went up to the Mines and killed a Jack snipe; and we also tried the marshes above . while we waited for lunch: which arrived about 1.30: Wynne and Joe bringing it. At the same time it came on to rain hard:...walked across to the Ccovert above Dolgeely, belongin to Caerynwch: but on our way we met Griffiths out shooting, and as we did not find a single Cock, and we saw their tracks: they had probably been over ll the coverts. We found a cock on some covert belonging to Price Lloyd ?aver down and I had a long shot at it, but missed it. On our way home we walked through Dolgun, and killed a fine wood pigeon... Woodcock. 1. A fine day....We beat some splendid coverts for Cock today between Coed Maeswglog and Bont-Newydd:..we saw sixteen or seventeen cocks..we were very unlucky with the chances we had at them, as the coverts were rocky and thick. A mild day; wind N.W. The Minor and I walked up to Helwgog: expecting to meet Pugh, but he did not come out: so we started on the mountain...we only saw two snipe at the bottom of the hill - one a Jack. the Minor shot. We went to Helwgog at one o`clock and the Squire met us there with lunch...we beat homewards for Cock..[with] Pugh`s Keeper. I might have killed 3 or 4 Cock, as it was I only killed one - we saw about six..we had bad luck to lose a bird, which I shot: in a thick part of the covert on the ground: a lot of feathers were on the ground, but the bird must have fluttered down the hill. We were home by 5 o`clock...all being very tired - went to bed early: and nobody stayed up to see the old Year out and the New Year in. Woodcock. 1. Snipe. 1. ----- End of the Year - 1873 ---__

Thursday January 1st A fine day. We had breakfast at 9 o`clock..... The Minor and I drove in the phaeton to Hengwrt Ucha, and there met Pugh with his dogs, and we shot over Blaenau etc: but we had very bad luck all day, as we did not see a single Cock, although we saw the marks of them in three distinct places. The hen pheasant which we shot, gave us a good chase, and has been at Blaenau for 3 years! We beat a good deal of Watt`s land, and also went on the hill for Snipe, but we only saw one: in fact, it was a very unlucky day. We gave up shooting at the lower marsh, where we missed a small covey of patridges, but in the dark. The phaeton met on the road. Pheasant 1 Hare 1 Rabbit 1

Friday January 2nd We got up at 6 o`clock: but it was raining in torrents, and had been a dirty night. However we determined to make a start for [Boddtalog sic], and if the weather compelled us, to stay at Towyn for a night. Wynne came to Dolgelley station with us, but wisely returned home. When we reached Towyn at 8.30 our prospects were brighter, as after we had had some breakfast at the Corbet arms, the weather cleared and continued pretty fine all day, although we had some heavy showers. We called at Tymawr, and saw Jones on our way up to the Gorse [cymryd mai GORS ydi hwn = marsh]: and we commenced beating for rabbits having "Boxer" and "Jack" with us. But the rabbits were very scarse [sic], and I alone killed one, so we walked up to the snipe marsh, but here a horrible squall of wind and hail came on quite annihilated our chance of killing Snipe: of which we saw eight or nine. We searched everywhere for partridges, but could not find them, and both before and after lunch we we took a beat down the hill to Boddtalog, seeing plenty of droppings but no birds. We picked up two couple of the snipe on the hill, which we had flushed from the marsh. Later in the afternoon we beat the rest of the gorse, and the Minor killed a rabbit. In the morning, the Minor saw a Woodcock in the gors, but did not get a shot. We returned to the Corbet Arms, where we changed and had tea, and returned by the 6.3 train, and sat down to dinner at 8.30. Snipe 4 Rabbit 2

Saturday January 3rd A most dreadfully wet morning: and after breakfast at 8 o`clock, we had quite given up all idea of shooting. Wynne and I went down to look at the river, and it suddenly became very cold, and heavy snow began to fall, and this continued till 10 o`clock: when the weather cleared, but we had heavy snow showers all day, and it was bitterly cold. We started out shooting about 10.30: but were unable to beat much covert: We saw a cock in the Torrent Walk, but it was very wild, and we did not get a shot. We beat a few outlying coverts without success, and then the marsh below the Mines, where we flushed three snipe, not shot at. At the Fron Mines we killed a couple of Jack Snipe and then had lunch at the Cross Foxes. After lunch we went above the Cross Foxes, and saw 5 or 6 snipe, but we saw a poacher shooting grouse on [Penyntigwr sic] mountain, and the Minor and Kensey went after him, but failed to catch him, as he ran up the mountain on their approach. We beat around over Caerynwch hill: but had no further sport, but we ought to have shot more snipe. The hare was found by John Ellis in a dying condition. Snipe (Jack) 3 Hare 1

Saturday March 21st I started to Dolserau by the 7.20 train, and reached Bontnewydd at 8.30: and the Minor met me in the phaeton. After I had had some breakfast we determined to start to Llyn Cynwych [sic]; and we did so about ten o`clock. It was a windy, wet and damp day: but warm, but not at all a favourable day for Llyn Cynwych. We soon walked up there, and I fished from the shore with fly, while the Minor fished from the boat. As soon as I began I caught a small trout; and by lunch time I had four nice trout: the Minor two, I rose three others, losing two. The wind was so strong that we could not fish the bottom of the Lake. After lunch we walked down to the weir, the Minor beginning just above the bridge: while I began just below Bont Newydd. I caught 28 small trout, and did not find them rising well, and so about 5 o`clock I walked down to the Minor, and we finished up at Dolgun, he having caught 55 trout. We dined at 7 o`clock: and went to bed at 10.30 Trout (Llyn Cynwch [sic] 6 (1)10 oz (1) 9 oz Sedge Fly Wnion 83 = 89

Monday March 23rd We made a very early start at 6.15 intending to sleep at the Tun: Chaplin drove us over there in the phaeton. We started up to Llyn [Abbw =? Ybi]: having made up our minds to go there, as it was so beautifully fine. We had a hard walk to the lake, as the ground was very heavy: but we got there alright, and found a capital breeze on the Lake. But we fished in vain, as not a trout would rise: and although flies were on the water, we did not see a fish rise to the natural: so at 11 o`clock we determined to walk down to the Cemlyn and fish that stream down. The Minor began some way above the place I did, fishing with worm: and he joined me late in the afternoon. The trout we caught were in poor condition, and did not take well, so that our sport was meagre. We fished down to Dolmelynllyn: when we finished at 5.30. We dined off a shoulder of mutton at 7 o`clock and went to bed very early. Our bag bad was Trout 43 (1)17 oz which I caught in the deep water of the top "Pool" - the others were small. The Minor caught at least thirty fish with the worm

Tuesday March 24th A gloriously find day. We had breakfast at 7.30: and started about 8 o`clock to fish above the Mawddach Falls. We had a rather long walk before we got to our fishing ground: the Minor began just above the "Falls", while I began further up. The fish rose very badly at first, but later on they took the fly much more readily. The Minor and I fished separate water and joined at lunchtime: which we had about 2 o`clock: and then fished a long way up the stream together. But really it was too bright for successful fishing: and we had to work hard to catch our fish. About 5 o`clock we turned and fished some pools on our way home: and at 6 o`clock walked to Ty`n y Groes where the phaeton met us and we sat down to dinner at Dolserau at 8.30. Trout 57 (1) 5oz

Wednesday March 25th We had breakfast at 7.30 and started over to Talyllyn: Davies driving the phaeton up the hill. It was a beautiful day but not a day for fishing; as there was not a cloud in the sky, and there was a cold wind. Therefore we could not expect much sport although the lake looked in good order enough. By lunch time we only had 5 trout, and these were small; and in the afternoon our sport was no better, so, totally disgusted, I gave up fishing at 4.45 and walked home reaching Dolserau in an hour and forty minutes. The Minor continued fishing and came home later: so that we sat down to dinner at 8 o`clock. The Minor caught seven to my two: but I had the largest 17oz. Our bag was Trout (Talyllyn) 9. Friday March 27th The wind changed to the S and the clouds had a very odd appearance, and there were every signs of wind and rain: however we started over to Talyllyn: the Minor and I walking up the Torrent, and there meeting Davies with the phaeton. When we began fishing about 9.25, there was a nice breeze, and the rain did not keep on much: but the trout would not rise at all, and the wind and rain kept on increasing. When we reached the top of the Lake, wind was blowing in heavy squalls, and there was a regular sea on: we tried to tow the boat up, but were regularly driven ashore; and so we lunched. We had several nice trout: and most of them we caught at the top of the lake. After lunch we crossed over the Lake, that is to say, the Minor and I did: as Davies [ducked?] going in the boat, and walked around. We began fishing, as best we could, from the shore: and I had the luck to land a good trout of 1lb 1oz: We towed the boat up thar side easily: and fished the bottom of the Lake: but I fished also a good deal from the shore: the fish rose very badly. We gave up fishing about 6 o`clock: and I, being wet, started home on foot: and I walked to the Torrent walk, before they caught me up in the phaeton: the Minor and I then ran home. We dined at 8.30. Saturday March 28th Chaplin drove us over soon after seven o`clock to Pant Gwyn: and we started up the mountain to Llyn [Llymru]. It was a fine morning, but blowing very strongly from the west. We began fishing about 9.45 and found the lake in good order: but the wind was very bad for fishing, as it blew every where on the Lake. The trout rose fairly well, but I lost at least six good fish: the Minor also lost several. At 12 o`clock, when we had lunch, we had caught 13 Trout: and hoped to continue our sport afterwards but the rain came down in torrents, and the wind increased to a gale, so that at 2 o`clock we were bound to seek shelter in a farm: where we were made very comfortable. As we wished to go to go to Llanuwchllyn: we tried to fish the [Cwm llwyd =? Cynllwyd], the stream which runs to Llanuwchllyn: but the wind and rain was so bad, and I got so cold, I was forced to give it up, and we walked to the station. The Minor fished for a short time, and came to the station later, having caught seven small trout. We returned home by the 5.31 train, and Chaplin met us at Bontnewydd. After a warm bath we felt none the worse for our ducking. Trout (Llyn Llymry) 13 (1) 8 oz. Flies. Wickhams Fancy Blue Dun. Sunday March 29th Very windy and wet from SW all day. We breakfasted at 10 o`clock and of course it was impossible to go to church. It blew a heavy gale, with heavy showers of rain. The Minor and I got out before lunch, and walked down to the river, and also went to see [Thirsy]. Monday March 30th A very windy day, and showery. Although the weather looked threatening, we determined to have another day at Llyn [Llymy] and so Chaplin drove us to [Pant Gwyn], and we started precisely at 7.10. It was very cold but a sharp walk to Llyn [Llymy], saw us commence fishing at 9 o`clock. of course the wind was blowing everywhere on the lake, and it required a good deal of patience to fish semicolon moreover the water was left in spray off the lake by the sudden gusts; and it was very hard to stand on one`s legs. The Minor was unfortunate in losing his hat, and so bought a hat from a shepherd for a "Bob", and the effect, when he put it on at lunch, cuz there`s considerable amusement stop the fish rose boldly, when they did rise but none of those we caught exceeded 5 ounces colon but a basket weight £10 colon and it was a pretty lot of fish stop we left the lake in a great hurry at 410 semi colon as we were afraid of missing the 530 train at can you fill in column but we were in lots of time. Trout (Llyn [Llymy]) 37

Tuesday March 31st we had breakfast at 8.30: and had intended going over to Talyllyn, but the gale of wind blowing, and the ugly looking weather stopped us. So we started by the 8.40 train intending to fish down from Drws y Nant, and the river was bank full, but clear. The Minor began fishing with worms, and caught some good trout: but I stuck to the fly all day. The fish rose well nearly all day, but the strong wind tried our patience sadly: out of our pool I caught at least 14 trout! The Minor had to give up fishing about 5 o`clock, as he tumbled into the river: I kept on till 6.15: and then gave up, as it turned very cold. Our basket was a nice one. Trout (Wnion) 134
