Wednesday April 1st In spite of the furious wind blowing from the SW the Minor and I started over Talyllyn at 8 o`clock: I walked nearly all the way, past the Minffordd Tun [sic]. We did not expect to have much sport; especially as the Lake with rather discoloured and full: and most of the fishing we did was from the shore opposite the road. But really owing to the wind one had great difficulty in getting the line on the water. The Minor was unlucky in losing a good fish in the morning which broke him; but we each caught a good one: the two together weighing 1lb 7oz.Heavy rain came on in the afternoon, but I am glad to say did not last long call: and after we had towed the boat up, we fished the top of the lake, and also the road side; but the fish would not rise: and it was about 5.30 when I started home on foot; the Minor and Davies catching me up in the phaeton at Caerynwch: I ran home down the Torrent, and we dined at 8 o`clock. It blew and rained terribly hard tonight. Trout (Talyllyn) 13 (2) 3/4lb. Flies: Soldier Palmer. and Large Mackerel.

Thursday April 2nd A windy and cloudy morning. The Minor and I started up to Llyn [[Cynwych] soon after 8: and hoped to have a good day there: but the high wind spoilt our sport. When we first reached the lake it was not so bad, but it became worse towards the afternoon. The Minor used the boat and caught two: and I fished from the shore, and rose three fish, one, a very good one, I hooked. About one o`clock, we had lunch, and then the wind was so high, and heavy rain came on, so we left the Lake, and went down to the [Clwyedog =? Clywedog]: here the Minor left me, and he started for Aberystwyth, to attend his Militia training: I fished a short way up the Torrent walk, and also went to the Wnion, but such a violent storm of rain and hail came on, I was forced to give up fishing about 3 o`clock. I never saw rain come down so hard, and a fearful gale blew. Trout Llyn [(Cynwych) =? Cynwch] 2 [(Clwyedog) =? Clywedog] 8

Saturday April 4th It was a wretchedly cold day: wind NW: and the mountains covered with snow. The Minor, Wynne, and I started to Talyllyn at 8.15: and I walked on: but a sudden snow storm came on, and I took refuge in the Turnpike, and the Minor and Wynne joined me. We went on as soon as the storm was over, and walked to the bottom of the "Pass. The lake was in a very dirty state and it was a regular bad day for fishing, as we had frequent snow, and hail storms, and I also heard thunder. I fished all the morning from the shore, the Minor and Wynne fishing from the boat, and at lunch time I had not risen a fish, but the Minor and Wynne each had one, Wynne`s fish being exactly a lb. We took refuge in a barn for lunch, heavy rain and hail fell, but afterwards it was fine, but very cold. My bad luck continued in the afternoon, and I only rose one fish all day, but Wynne caught two more good fish, one in the Burn Bay, and another at the top of the Lake. The Minor had no better luck, and later in the afternoon went up the little stream which runs down through the "Pass", and fished with a worm, and the phaeton picked him up.... we dined soon after 8 o`clock. It turned much milder this evening. Trout (Talyllyn) 4 Olive dun L.E. (Alpine Trout) 5

Monday April 6th A fine day. Wind NW. We had breakfast at 7.30: and the Minor and I went up to Llyn [Cynwych]: and really it was a good fishing day; but the trout as usual took very badly at Llyn [Cynwych]: I fished from the boat first of all, while the Minor fished from the shore; and I rose three, while the Minor hooked and lost a good fish. We lunched at 12.30 and as the Minor have to leave for [Aberyswyth sic] about 5 o`clock, we [he?] went down and fished the river, commencing at the ford. I walked down the hill by Llanfacreth [sic], and on the way fished the Lake and the stream, in the latter catching eight fish. By 5.30 I reached the Wnion, and for 3 hours had good sport, the trout rising well. Wynne had gone up the river how to Drws y Nant, and our respective bags were: WE Trout (Wnion) 60 LE 79 ME 53 = 192 Trout

Tuesday April 7th Wynne and I had breakfast at 7 and drove to Pant Gwyn in the phaeton, and after a quick walk reached Llyn [Lynwy] a little before 9. There was hardly enough breeze blowing; and as it was fine and warm, a good many flies were on the water, and consequently the trout were rising a great deal, but seldom would look at our flies. I lost several fish, and when we started down the hill to fish the Cynllwyd, about 1 o`clock, I had four, while Wynne had one trout. The stream was very clear, and the trout rose badly, moreover a good deal of rain fell, so when we reached Llanuwchllyn we had caught but few: but Wynne had one a good 1/4lb. ...... We dined soon after 7. Trout (Llyn [Llywyn]) 5 [Cunllyd] 13 = 18.

Wednesday April 8 A fine and bright day, but the wind was cold, from NW. Wynne and I started over to Talyllyn at 8 o`clock, and met Davis at the Cross Foxes with the phaeton. There was a stiff breeze on the Lake: but it turned out a thorough bad day for fishing, and I suppose owing to the cold wind. We rose a few small fish when we began, and I caught one of 1/2 lb; and this was the only one we caught in the Lake all day. Late in the afternoon we went down to the Dysynni, but this was very clear, and we only caught a few small trout. We gave up fishing at 5 o`clock, and I walked home from the bottom of the Pass: and got in at 6.35: - we dined at 7.30. Trout (Talyllyn) 1

Thursday April 9th I had intended to go up to Llyn [Cynwych] this morning, but as heavy rain was falling at 7.30, and the river was in flood; Wynne and I with Davies took rail to Drws y Nant, and then walked up about a mile: above the Tun. We began fishing with worm, but as the day turned out beautifully fine, the river running down very quickly, and we soon took to fly. Our sport was not good all day: but we had some nice trout, and gave up fishing at Bontnewydd at 6 o`clock. The Squire arrived today from town: and Wynne and I met him at the Bridge; being too wet to wait for the train at Bont Newydd. We dined at 7 o`clock. Trout 76.

Friday April 10th A very fine and warm day. Wynne and I started over to Talyllyn; at 8 o`clock, and Davies met us with the phaeton at the top of the Torrent Walk, and I walked from the bottom of the hill through the Pass. A better day for fishing could not have been imagined, especially on Talyllyn, but perhaps the sun might have been too bright, and the breeze too strong; at all events the fish beat us till four o`clock in the afternoon. Having fished hard till past 3 o`clock we went ashore at the top of the lake, and amused ourselves in jumping ditches. Then Davis and I rowed the boat up and we fished down along the deep shore, and found a little rise on the trout, and finding the cow dung on the water, so we put it on [sic: y frawddeg hon yn edrych yn chwithig], and caught 6 small fish, and rose one or two more.We gave up at 5.15; and I walked home from the bottom of the Pass: and got in by 7 o`clock, and we dined at 7.30. Saturday April 11th A mild and warm day. Wind SW. At 8 o`clock I started with Davies Llyn Cynwch [mae ME yn sillafu hwn yn gywir tro ma] while Wynne went up to Bontnewydd to fish the river. I found a very gentle breeze on the lake; which died away completely by 12.30. A great many gnats were on the water, and the trout were rising to them. I tried to imitate them as best I could, and rose two fish, one of which I caught, but it was very small. As the breeze died away completely, I ran down the hill as fast as I could to the river, and commenced fishing at the meeting of the waters; where I caught a good trout of nearly 1/2lb. There was a great rise on the trout, but the 94 I caught were very small. I fished down fished to the weir, and gave up soon after 6. I twice caught two trout at once. Wynne also had good sport. Dinner was at 7 o`clock, and we went to the billiard room afterwards. Trout ME (Llyn Cynwych [sic]) 1 (Wnion) 94. WE 114

Sunday April 12th A very fine day. Breakfast was at 10 o`clock: and Mother, Nelly, Wynne and i Wyn and I drove to Church in the Landau. This afternoon Wynn and I rambled about, and also went to the Big Pool, and were tempted to take a bath, having borrowed towels from a Farm close by: of course the water was very cold but we enjoyed it very much; and afterwards walked back around by Bontnewydd, and also went up to see Davies. Monday April 13th Heavy rain was falling this morning; and the wind was very cold from the West; and the mountains were covered with snow. However it cleared up pretty soon, and continued showery all day. We had intended to go up the Mawddach, but the weather altered our plans, and we walked right up the Clwyedoc [sic. Clywedog?], and fished down. We began with worm, but the wind was so strong on the open ground, that we found it very hard to fish: Wynne left me at lunch time - which we had at the "Fall"; and then I fished down very carefully with Fly, Kenzey was with me; and when I finished I had 52 large trout: Wynne had good sport on the Wnion in the afternoon killing 60 trout. Tuesday April 14th. The wind was easterly, but it was a beautiful day; and Wynne, Kensey and I started to Tynygroes in the phaeton, soon after 8: and then walked to the Falls, intending to commence fishing just above: but here we found two men fishing; and so we made arrangements with them that we should walk above the second wood and commence fishing up. This we did; and although we got rid of the trees, we found it very hard fishing in the open owing to the wind, which was blowing very strongly downstream. Also we met two men who had been fishing the stream above us, with worm since daylight, and they had a nice basket. Our sport was very poor all day; as the fish rose badly, and it was quite impossible to fish upstream owing to the wind. To make matters worse, one of the men (the parson) who we had left below, came up to us and would insist on fishing one water, until I expostulated with him, when he left us. We fished a long way up, and gave up soon after 4 o`clock, and had a tramp of about 8 miles back to Tynygroes: but we got back to Dolserau in time to dress for dinner at 7 o`clock. Thursday April 16th We determined to go over to Talyllyn again today: and it seemed a good day for fishing. Wind NW and fine. We started rather late at 8.15: and we walked over there, but were a long time on the road. The wind was not strong when we began fishing, but it got worse and worse; and by the evening it was impossible to fish with satisfaction from the boat. By lunch time I alone had one fish, and Wynne had very bad luck all day; but the fish never rose properly; and in the afternoon I mostly fished from the shore and caught two nice trout in this way; but some of them were very small. In order to be home by 7 o`clock we started away soon after 5: and Wynne walked with me from the bottom to the top of the Pass; when I went on to the Torrent Walk alone, and waited for him; and we ran down the "Torrent" together, and got in in good time. Saturday June 13th 1874 A very fine day: wind NE and rather cold. I started by the 7.20 train to Bont Newydd: where the Minor met me with the phaeton... the Minor started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] know before I did, as I walked down to Dolgun to see the young pheasants: which are thriving and doing well. About 11 o`clock I started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic]: and found a nice breeze on the Lake, but it turned out a bad evening for perch fishing, as it was too cold and windy. I caught two trout from the shore, one a very nice fish; and we killed five Perch with minnow, but they `took` very badly so we gave up at 6.30....

Monday June 15th A very fine and bright day. Wind strong from NE. We made an early start to Talyllyn: and I walked over there: and we began fishing about 10 o`clock from the shore; Davies going to the hotel to get a boat. The lake, of course, was very low and clear; and the trout rose shyly; and we had to work hard for our basket. I think we caught more in the afternoons than in the morning, and most of our fish were caught at the head of the Lake. Odd to say, the trout seemed very partial to the red [Peniell] fly: and we also caught with black gnat. buzz. Ribbed with silver tinsel. We fished till 6.30: and I walked home from the bottom of the Pass: and we sat down to dinner about 9 o`clock. The Griffiths drove up in a car from Dolgelley to give us advice about our expedition to Llyn Glowlyn [sic] tomorrow Trout (Talyllyn) 19 (8lbs)

Tuesday June 16th A very fine and hot day. Wind, fresh from the NE. We had a cold breakfast at 6 o`clock, and drove to Dolgellau: intending to take a car as far does Y Gelligoch on the Trawsfanneth [sic Trawsfynydd] road: but we had a series of misfortunes before making a regular start: as when we reached Dolgelley we found we had left a fishing basket behind with all our tackle in it, so we sent the ostler back to Dolserau on a pony: but the man brought back the wrong things, so we had to drive in the car to Dolserau, and the Minor "nipped" across the field, and after a great deal of trouble found it: so after having wasted about an hour, we made a start, and reached YGelligoch about 9 o`clock, 7 miles from Dolgelley. We luckily picked up a man at one of the Farm houses to come up with us to Glowlyn [Gloywlyn]; and we went by the Roman Steps; through a pass of Cwm Backyn [Bychan] and over some very rough ground, and we reached the lake after a 4 miles walk. We use large and sober coloured flies: and had good sport: but the Minor was the most lucky, as he killed 4 splendid fish all in one place: and the largest weighed just over a lb. I used my new double handed rod of Bowness: and found it very useful. During the afternoon we climbed up to a small lake called Llyn Craich y Dee [sic. Creigddu?] and fished for half an hour: I killed two trout there. We started down to Llanbedr about 7 o`clock; and after a 6 mile walk, we reached the Victoria Hotel, a very comfortable little place: and found that our baggage had arrived. Wednesday June 17th We had breakfast at 7 o`clock: and drove up to Cwm yr afon farm; and then walked up to Llyn Glowlyn [Gloywlyn] from there; and we went up a better way than we came down last night; as a bog showed us a path. It was blowing great guns today, from SE: and it was almost impossible to fish the Lake: at all events there was only one side of the lake where one could get the line decently on the water. The trout were not rising at all today; and there was a great difference from yesterday: however we stuck to it all day: and fished till 6 o`clock: and the Minor caught the only three fish killed, but, [ferring] to say, I had many more rises than he did: although I did not manage to catch a fish. We walked down pretty quick: and reached Llanbedr soon after 8 o`clock; and had a very comfortable little dinner. Trout (Llyn Glow) 3 [8?]

Thursday June 18th A very fine and hot day. We left Llanbedr by the 7.25 train, and reached Dolgelley at 8.45: and then walked by the upper road to Dolgun; where we crossed the river to look at the pheasants: and we now have 89 Pheasants and 82 partridges hatched, and all strong and healthy. When we were here we had a great [sell sic], as some men mowing one of our fields sent to say they had found a partridges nest, so off I bolted to bring the eggs: when, what was my disgust when I found it was a corncrake`s nest with 11 eggs in it: I took the eggs, and we placed them under a hen. We then went up to the "Big Pool" to fish for eels: but as they did not seem inclined inclined to take I fished up stream for trout, and had very good fun; but it was very hard fishing: I returned to the Pool for lunch, and then fished down to Dolserau, and gave up at 4 o`clock. At 4.30 we had some dinner, and then went up to Llyn Cynwych [sic Cynwch] to fish for Perch, and we were nearly driven [mode sic mad?] by the mosquitoes and flies: we had bad sport, and came home for supper at 10 o`clock. Saturday June 20th Fine, but cloudy day. Wind easterly. We started by the 8.40 train: and travelled on the engine to the top of the incline: near Pant gwyn farm; and from there we walked over the mountain to avoid in Coed Llyn [Llymry]. We reached there about 10 o`clock; and expected to catch fish as a light breeze was blowing; but we could do little good all day; and after lunch the breeze almost died away altogether. The Minor had the luck to catch two fish at once; and he caught five: but they were all small. I did not get a single fish all day, but I had very bad luck in losing a really good trout, after playing him for some time: I only rose one more. We started down to Llanuwchllyn in good time; and caught the 5.30 train..... Dinner was at 7 o`clock: and we went out [mothing] afterwards. Trout (Llyn Llymry) 5

Sunday June 21st I got up at 8.30 and went to bathe [wedi ei sillafu yn y ffordd fodern tro yma] in the Big Pool: and breakfast was at 10 o`clock.... Dinner was at 7 o`clock and the minor and I went out [mothing] afterwards. The atmosphere was dull and heavy today but there was little sign of rain, although the glass was falling.

Monday June 22nd A fine day. Wind due South. We started over to Talyllyn at 8 o`clock and I walked as far as Minfordd Turn: where we determined to send back for some clothes, and stay a night at Tyn-y-Cornel [sic], so good a fishing day did it look. And we were not wrong; as we had capital sport; the trout rising well to the Red ant; Jones` [Infallith]; and grouse Orange: By lunch time we had 19 trout: the largest weighing exactly a lb: and which I caught at the head of the Lake near the rushes: these were sent home by the car: which went for our portmanteau. During the afternoon we caught 16: but our sport was virtually over by 5 o`clock, as we did nothing after that; although we fished till 6 o`clock. Dinner was at seven: in the Coffee room: and several other men dined there. Slight rain fell this evening: and we went out to set the eel trap. Trout (Talyllyn) 35
