Tuesday June 23rd We got up at seven: and fished an hour before breakfast, which we had at nine: and a strong and rainy wind was blowing from the South, and by 10 o`clock it began to come down pretty heavily; and continued showery all day. We had grand sport fishing from 10 o`clock till 1 o`clock: killing 32 trout on various flies - principally - Jones [Intaluble], Coch -y-bonddu, dressed large; Red-spinner - grouse & orange. We caught most of our fish at the head of the Lake; and I had hold of a very large fish, but unluckily my line was coiled around the handle of the winch, and he got off. We towed the boat up; and came in for lunch; and so heavily did the rain come down, that we determined to go home, and catch the river in flood; but we were awfully [sold]; as the rain cleared off considerably; and when we arrived at Dolserau; the river was as low as ever. We went down to see the pheasants: I then came in and read for an hour or so before dinner at 7.45: Trout (Talyllyn) 32, caught in 4 hours. Rain fell heavily this evening.

Wednesday June 24th We had breakfast at 8.30: and were in great hopes of finding a fresh in the river [sic]: but it had hardly risen a foot. The Minor drove right up the river to Rhydymain: while I stayed near the house; but I did not stick to it long, as the river was so low: but at about 11 o`clock I walked up to Nannau Lake [=? Llyn Cynwch??] to give the Perch a good try: and I had not much difficulty in catching minnows. My sport was [right?] up to 5 o`clock, but then I had a great sport for half an hour so at [one] place, until I ran short of bait: and I ran as quick as I could to Nannau ponds to get more: but I did nothing more, as I had to be home by 7 o`clock: and I just got in, in time: we dined at 7.30 Perch (Llyn Cynwych [sic]) 13 Trout [Wnion] 125

Thursday June 25th Curry, the Minor and I started over Talyllyn soon after 9 o`clock: and I walked nearly all the way there. We began fishing about 11 o`clock: but our sport was indifferent all day; and this was no doubt owing to the glaring hot sun which we had all the afternoon. I only caught four fish all day: but Curry was the most lucky as he caught 8 fish: one a lb. There was a nice breeze all day, and I found it sometimes almost too strong, as I was in a boat by myself, and it was no joke [lugging?] the boat against the wind. Curry, the Minor, and Davies were in another boat. We gave up fishing about 5 o`clock; and reached home in time for 7.30 dinner. Trout (Talyllyn) 18: this includes one we found wounded by a cormorant.

Friday June 26th It was oppressively hot this morning. We had breakfast at 9.30: and I did some reading before: We spent the morning looking at the pheasants; and eel sniggling. The Curry`s wient away at 1.30 and soon after the Minor and I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] to catch perch: but whether it was the thunderstorm or the hot weather, they would not bite at all: and the Minor alone caught four: so we gave up at 6 o`clock: A storm came on this evening over Barmouth: and heavy rain fell as far as Llanelltydd [sic.]: but we were little affected: except it was much cooler after the storm. Dinner was at 8 o`clock;.... Perch Llyn Cynwych [sic.] 4

Saturday June 27th A fine and hot day. The Minor and I determined to walk over the Drws y nant grouse moor; the lease having just been signed: so we started by the 8.50 train to Drws y nant, with Davies, to interpret for us in our meetings with the Tenants, and we found him very useful: we also took Bang the young setter, who made great improvements on his first lesson. We had a long walk, as near as possible round the moor, and determined as best we could the boundaries. We did not find more than 3 birds on our walk, but these lay very close: and wish disturb the heather as little as possible. Just before we had lunch, we found a kestrel`s nest on a rock: and took 3 young birds home with us, to rear. We walked home by Coed maeswrglog hill, when we found four young birds strong on the wing, and two old ones: and we were surprised to see the young birds fly so strong. We bathed at the Big Pool: as we passed; and very refreshing it was, and we reached home about 5.30: We caught a good many butterflies and moths.

Sunday June 28th I went to Church with Mother.... Chaplin had arrived yesterday evening with the old Roan. This afternoon the weather looked threatening, and there was a heavy thunderstorms towards Bala: however it did not reach us; and after lunch we went down to see the pheasants: and I also had a walk after butterflies. Dinner was at 7 o`clock and the Minor and I went up to see Davies afterwards.

Monday June 29th The Minor and I started over to Talyllyn: but did not expect much sport; as the wind was easterly, what there was of it; and it looked very like rain: it was very close and muggy. I walked over there; and we began fishing from the shore: and in the meantime Davies went to get a boat. Although we rose a good many fish; we had a very bad day`s sport: and gave up fishing before 4 o`clock. A good deal of rain fell during the day. I walked home, and was able to do two hours reading before dinner at 8 o`clock. Trout (Talyllyn) 7

Tuesday June 30th We started by the 8.50 train with our tent and provisions; intending to camp out a night at Llyn Llymry [sic]: Chaplin and Davies came, and when we reached: they hired a horse and cart; and took the things up the greater part of the way on that. I walked up immediately to fish the lake; while the Minor fished the stream up. The rain which had been threatening for some time now came on with a vengeance; and our hopes of camping out were soon dashed to the ground; for we were all wet to the skin in a very short time. The wind was blowing everywhere on the lake, and they only had three fish by the time the Minor came up for lunch: we then determined to fish the lake till 4 o`clock; and walk down to Llanuwchllyn and catch the 5.30 train. We had to carry our hamper down; which we did in turns: and got home, drenched to the skin, by 7 o`clock. The river came down in nice flood this evening. Wednesday July 1st A very wet day. Wind SW. The rain, which was much wanted, continued all day; and the Minor and I got up at 5 o`clock to fish from the ford to Dolgun, in the hopes of killing some sewin; but I alone rose one: We had breakfast at 8 o`clock; and then drove up the river and I began fishing at Bont Rhiadyr [sic], while the Minor drove higher up. The river, however rose very rapidly and the trout would not rise well; so I walked down about 10 o`clock; and meeting the Minor, who had a nice lot of trout; we fished the Ford, Handbridge, and Dolgun Pools with worm: we caught some nice trout: one I caught at the Do l g u n being a nice fish of 1/2 lb: but the funny thing was we did not meet a single sea trout: we gave up fishing at 6 o`clock, and got back to Dolserau in time to see the Squire and Wilson Noble arrive. It cleared up this evening Trout (Wnion) 133

Thursday July 2nd A showery day. Wind SW. The Minor and Noble drove up in the phaeton Bont Rhaiadyr to fish the Wnion, which was in good order for fly: while I had intended to go to the Mawddach, but as Davies never came, I did not go: but fished the Wnion from the Bathing Pool down to the weir stream and I then walked up to Llyn Coch, and fished down: but I did not rise a single sewin, and gave up about 3.30: having caught 44 trout. When I got back, I went down to see the pheasants with the squire, and then came back and read till dinner time. The Minor and Wilson did not see a single sewin: but the former caught some nice trout. Trout (Wnion) ME 44 WN and LE 83

Friday July 3rd A very windy, and showery day. I did not fish at all today: but read for 2 hours this morning, and then walked up to Caerynwch moor; to see if there were any grouse there; and I had a long tramp: but although I saw no birds; there are evidently some there: I flushed several snipe. I was home in time for 1 o`clock lunch: and this afternoon I drove into Dolgelley with the Squire and Wilson to attend the meeting of the Association: ..... the Minor did a little fishing on the river. Saturday July 4th A fine day: but a heavy wind blew from SW. We determined to go over to fish the Mawddach today, and made a start in the phaeton at 8.30: and as W Noble did not get up we went off without him, and he joined us later in the day. We began fishing at the `Rock` Pool: and fished up to the Pool above the "meeting of the waters [UN dyfynnod], and although the water was in excellent order we did nothing: but the Minor rose two Sewin, and I one. We had ocular proof that fish were in the river, as at the top Pool, we watched some good fish jumping at the Fall, and some even running up; and this may account for their not looking at a Fly. We gave up fishing soon after 5 o`clock rather disgusted, and walked back to Tyn y groes: and were soon home in time for dinner. We brought 3 more kestrel hawk`s [sic] back with us, as Davies climbed up into the nest and caught them.

Monday July 6th We had breakfast at 7.30: and the Minor and I started over to Tyn y groes, to fish the Mawddach: and I walked over the hill by Nannau in 3/4 hour. The river was very low, however I began with small flies, while the Minor tried the worm: and I was unfortunate in losing a sewin just below Tyn y groes, as soon as I began: and the Minor lost another higher up with the worm. Unluckily 3 men with Abel Ellis went out on the river above us: and they caught 3 sewin. The Squire, Mother, Nelly and W Noble came with our lunch to the Meeting of the Waters, and just as we were joining them we saw a man netting a Pool: and take a fish of about 3lb out. The Squire came down; and we found the man had no licence, so when we returned we told Colonel Romer; and the case will be investigated tomorrow in Dolgelley. After lunch, I fished a short way up the Eden, but to no purpose; we had a very jolly bath in the Pool about 5 o`clock, and then started home; calling on Colonel Romer on our way.

I read for two hours before breakfast, which we had at 9.30: afterwards I walked up to the place above the Big Covert to see the four coops of pheasants, which, have been removed there from Dolgun: and they seemed pretty well settled in this new home. About 12 o`clock, W Noble, the Minor, and I started up to him Llyn Cynwych [sic] to fish for perch, and we took our lunch with us: but for some reason or another the Perch would not bite at all: we had a very jolly bath in the Lake, and were back in time to dress for dinner. We sat out in the garden afterwards as it was such a beautiful evening, and then played billiards. We saw the Comet tonight about 11 o`clock. Perch (Llyn Cynwych [sic]) 3

Wednesday July 8th I read for two hours before breakfast, which we had at 9.30: and afterwards we went out to fish the river: the day was very hot and bright: and it was no easy work to catch fish. I walked up to just below Bontnewydd: calling to see the Pheasants in the covert on my way. I fished up through all the Helygog Pools: and caught some very good trout: but it was very hard fishing. I saw a Salmon of about 6lbs in one of the Pools: but I did not see a Sewin all day. I gave up fishing at 6 o`clock; as we had intended to dine at seven o`clock and go to the [Gelf`s] dance: but as the Squire heard by telegram of the death of Uncle Edward: we did not go. Tuesday July 9th A fine and close day: but rather bright for fishing in the afternoon. We started over to Talyllyn about 8.30: and I walked as far as Minffordd. We had some bother about getting two boats, but the Minor fished with another man: and I and Noble with Davies, went in another boat. The trout did not rise at all all day, but we managed to get a good basket. I was unlucky in hooking a fine drought, and loosing [sic.] him. We had our best sport as usual at the head of the Lake, and the flies that killed best were, the Red Ant. Grouse & orange, Black buzz with silver tinsel. We fished till six o`clock; and then started home; and I walked from the bottom of the Pass; and got in by 7.30. We dined at 8 o`clock, and played billiards afterwards. Saturday July 11th The Minor and I started to Llyn Crogennan [sic] soon after 8 o`clock; Davies having started earlier with the boat; and he had only just arrived when we got there at 9.30.It was a hot and bright day, but luckily the breeze kept up but it was very light. The Minor had some luck in the morning, as he caught ten fish (all from the boat) to my three, two of which I caught from the shore. However the fish were not rising a bit; and at lunch time (2.30) we only had 13 fish. However, after lunch the Minor and I had grand sport in the boat, fishing in one bay by the lake; and it was very funny but in other parts of the lake we did no good at all. The boat leeked [sic] dreadfully, which necessitated continual bailing, and turning the boat over on shore. We fished till 6.30, and then only gave up as I lost my cast in a fish; but the breeze died away considerably in the evening. We went home very quickly: as we were at Dolserau at 8.15. The fish never rose well all day, and this was owing to the weather. Our boat, I am glad to say, did not leak half so much as on Saturday. Mother and Nelly drove over in the phaeton with our lunch, and we had a very jolly picnic; and we drove home together at six o`clock, but the weather, which looked threatening, broke up; and we did not get home before the rain came down. Tuesday July 14th There was a heavy thunderstorm during the night with torrents of rain; but it cleared up between 10 and 11 and was very bright and fine for the rest of the day. The Minor and I were up early; and went to the ford at six o`clock, the river being in high flood: but we did not do much good I alone getting one Sewin of a lb: and we fished the crooked Pool, and then into breakfast at 7.30: of course we used worm. After breakfast we went to Dolgun Pool, where I caught another Sewin with worm, and the Minor hooked another. I also tried a minnow, but did no good. I used a fly as soon as possible, but the fish were immovable, and I fished right above the Helygog pools, but did no good. Wednesday July 15th We had breakfast at 7.30: and we hardly knew where to fish: but the Minor determined to go up the Wnion; while I made an expedition to the two lakes on Cader, viz Llyn Arran and Llyn-y-Cader [sic]. I walked up to Llyn Arran in one hour and five minutes: and it was a rather sleep walk up there; and the weather was close and hot. I was disappointed in finding no breeze; but a great many trout were rising: and I caught three, one about a quarter pound: and also what I think is a gwyniad: a silver little fish. At 12 o`clock I walked over to Llyn y Cader [sic]: and had some fair sport there: but the Lake was very shallow, and covered with rushes. Friday July 17th Very fine and hot day. I read for a couple of hours this morning, and at 10 o`clock went up to see the Pheasants in the covert, and those at Dolgun. I then joined the Minor, and we went down to the river just below the house, and set about making a Pool. We made good progress before lunch, and afterwards Chaplain came down and helped us, and we finished it by 5 o`clock; and it seemed tolerably strong. We netted a grillse 3 [and 3 quarter pounds] out of the Pool: and we had great difficulty in getting him out from under a rock. Afterwards I went and tried a few pools with a fly, and went up as far as the Big Pool, but found the river too low. The Minors` back was very sore and inflamed, being burnt by the sun working at the pool as he took his shirt off. Grilse [Wnion] 1 3 [and 3 quarter pounds] netted.

Dyddiadur "Sporting Diary" CEM Edwards Dolserau (Archifdy Dolgellau)DB
Sunday July 19th A very fine and hot day. The Squire, Mother, Nelly and I drove into church in the Landau, and Mrs Richards came out to lunch with us. This afternoon I walked up to Helygog Pools to catch butterflies: and I sat watching the Sewin and Salmon in one of the Pools, and saw one very large fish. When I came back I went down Dolgun to see the Pheasants, and talked to Kinsey.
