Monday July 20th A fine day. but it clouded over very much this evening, and looked like rain. I went over to Talyllyn this morning, and as Davies had to have Jack shoed on his way up, I reached Talyllyn before he did. It was very bright for fishing in the morning but a nice breeze was blowing, and I expected to do better than I did, but the fish never rose well all day and I had to fish very hard to catch my dozen: I had six by lunch time at 1.30: and I fished for an hour and a half in the afternoon without getting a rise! I caught one fish 3/4lb: and had six in the afternoon. I caught with Red ant. Red pennell. P & green. G & orange. I walked home from the bottom of the Pass; and dinner was at 8 o`clock. The Minor went up to the Helygog pools to try for the big fish and eels; He caught one Sewin 2 [.5 lbs]: and a great number of eels. Trout (Talyllyn)12 (1) 3/4lb. . LE (Wnion) Sea trout 1 (2[.5] lbs). Eels and one Trout.

Tuesday July 21st We had breakfast at 7.30: and I walked up to the Helygog Pools to try for a big fish: while the Minor fished the river for trout. I fished with worm and as the water was very clear I saw some very fine Sewin and grilse; and they wanted to take my worm very much, and one did even bite at it. However, I tried every dodge in vain, and then walked up to Bont Rhiadr [sic]. and tried with worm there: but having no sport I returned to the Helygog Pool; and gave up about 5 o`clock. I went down Dolgun to see the pheasants and partridges, while the Minor drove into Dolgelly [sic] to meet Morris Davies and Gilbertson who come to play in the County match tomorrow.... Dinner was at 7.30 and we played Pool afterwards. LE Trout (Wnion) 143

Wednesday july 22nd A fine fine day, but windy, and we had 2 or 3 showers...... Thursday July 23rd Heavy rain fell last night; so the Minor and I were up by six o`clock; and went down to the Ford, the river being in high flood and dirty. We finished with worm: and I caught a small sewin at the Ford; and the Minor, one at the Handbridge Pool, and another at the Meeting of the waters. We then went to Dolgun Pool, and I was unlucky in loosing [sic] two fish here, one a very large one. We went in to breakfast at 9.30, and afterwards Morris Davies and I drove to Tyn y groes to fish the Mawddach while the Minor and Gilbertson fished the Wnion. The Mawddach was high, but in good order for fly; and Morris Davies with my single handed rod soon landed a nice Sewin, above Tyn y groes. I rose several small fish, but did not catch one til late in the afternoon: Morris Davies, however, soon after lunch caught another 2lb: and we fished as far as the `Meeting of the Waters`, and then fished some of the best pools back. We were late in getting home. The Minor and Gilbertson had no sport; the latter alone getting one small Sewin. Sea trout (Mawddach) ME and M Davis 3 (1)2 and a half pound, (1) 2 lb Wnion (ME LE and ??) 4 = 7

Friday July 24th Heavy showers kept the rivers in good order; so we determined to fish the Mawddach: and after breakfast at 8 o`clock, we started in the phaeton; and M Davies and I were dropped at Llanelltyd, while the Minor and Gilbertson went on to Tyn y groes:- The Sewin rose shyly today, and we saw a good many but none of any size. I caught two before lunch, one of them 3/4lb at the Poachers Rock Pool. Owing to the Cefn Coch mine, sending into the river a lot of filthy water, the river became very dirty, and I think must have put the fish off. I rose several below Tyn y groes: and hooked one. We fished up till we met them, with the Squire, Mother, and Nelly: and were sorry to hear that the Minor had lost a fine grilse grilse of about 6lb: owing to a bad hook. We were home for dinner about 8 o`clock, and played Pool afterwards. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2

Saturday July 25th I read for an hour and a half before breakfast at 9.30: and M Davies and Gilbertson went away this morning. The river was in good order for small flies, and I began at Dolgun and fished right up to Bontnewydd without getting a sea trout, although i rose two. I then walked up to the Helygog pools, but did nothing there, and returned home rather late. The Minor had intended to fish the river, but as his [winch?] was left in Dolgelley yesterday by mistake he had to go in and fetch it, and then walked on to Crogennan [sic]: he returned this evening about 8.45: with a nice lot of fish. Sunday July 26th We all went to Church this morning. After lunch I walked up to see the pheasants in the covert; and then on to the 38 partridges, which we have turned down at [Litteria?] farm. From there I walked to Dolgun to see the remaining partridges and pheasants: and just before dinner I went up to see Davies, and on my way back I saw some boys picking heaps of mushrooms some of which I bought. The Squire, Tom, the Minor and I took 3 wasps` nests tonight: two of which were in Dolgun

Monday July 27th Owing to the showers of yesterday, we expected the Mawddach to be in good order, so the Minor and I drove over there, and began fishing at the Poachers` rock: but the river was lower than we expected, and the sun came out very bright at times, so that about 11.30 I gave up in disgust: and determined to go for Trout above the Falls. Had I not been so terribly tormented by midges I should have done better than I did. The Minor caught a Sewin about 2lb, soon after I left him, and he also had a small one. Mother, Mrs Sheriff, Mis`s Bridgeman and the two little Richards` came over for a picnic to Tyn y groes: but the rain spoilt it all. The Squire drove the Minor and I home. We played a round game this evening. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2 Trout (Mawddach above Falls) 23

Tuesday July 28 We had breakfast at 8 o`clock; and the Minor and I started over to Talyllyn. Talyllyn, and I walked over. We expected it to be a good day, but it turned out a dull, showery and thundery day; with hardly any breeze at all; and we hardly fished more than four hours all day. Late in the afternoon, during a heavy shower of rain, the Minor killed two nice fish: the largest of which weighed a pound: but I had no luck in the afternoon We gave up when it was perfectly hopeless fishing, as it came on to be dead calm. I walked home from the bottom of the Pass: and we were home in good time. Trout (Talyllyn) 10 (1) 1lb

Wednesday July 29th The Minor and I got up at 5 o`clock: and made a very early start to fish and camp out at Llyn Crogennan [sic.] for two days: Chaplin coming up with our People, who came for a picnic: and he brought the tent and provisions with him. The Minor and I reached the lake before 9 o`clock and we walked up from Dolgelley. A nice breeze was on the lake all day, but the sun was very bright; and it is a wonder we did so well as we did. We had a very jolly picnic, and our people left about 6.30 after tea. It was a glorious evening, and we supped about 8.30, but did little good fishing late. The Minor was successful with his eel lines. I turned into [sic.] roost at 1030. Trout (Llyn Crogennan) 42 Eels 5

Friday January 1st The New Year came in like a Lion: it blew terribly hard from SSE with torrents of snow, hail and rain all day. The Minor and I nothing daunted went out about 11 o`clock: and commenced just above Dolgun, where I killed two Cock: but we had luck in finding them, as we flushed them both before, and I struck one hard, and pickanded him up eventually. Gyp finding him for us. Kinsey was not out with us, but only John and the two spaniels. We had intended to go up to the Cross Foxes, but the wind fairly beat us at Coed; and we were bound to return homewards. The Minor killed one Snipe out of three at Coed; and a Woodcock in the Torrent Walk: and we saw another at Bryn Bras but did not shoot at it. We were home by 3 o`clock: and about four a Woodcock was seen in the garden: but we [missed?] him somehow or other, as I did not see it get up. It rained very hard tonight: and the weather completely changed. Woodcock 3. Snipe 1 ME & LE Coed Wood and Caerynwch

Saturday January 2nd We had breakfast at 8 o`clock and as Kinsey had seen five Woodcock on his way up to Pugh of Helygog yesterday we went after them. We began at [Letterice?], where we saw one Cock very wild: the Minor shot a hare at Dolgwarthog, and we saw a Cock and some Snipe there. We then came to the place where Kinsey saw the Woodcock, some covert belonging to Griffith P. Williams and adjoining Helygog. I shot one cock: and we saw three others; all the birds being very wild; and we were just getting to the best part of the wood; when we met Baker and a cousin of Griffith Williams shooting, so we rightly gave up the covert to them: it being unfortunate that we thatshould both have both chosen the same day to go there. The afternoon was a fiasco; as the shepherds were all over the place after sheep around Perthillwyddion [sic.], and we thought we heard guns going off in the direction of Caerynwch hill so we sent Kinsey off, and we went round Caerynwch hill, and reached home about 3.45, in time to see the Watkin Williams off, and very sorry we were to lose them. Tuesday January 5th It was a fine and mild day, and we had a very long walk [to Blainau], but I could see next to nothing, and only killed one snipe: the only one I shot at. I tried to stalk a buzzard; and got within 40 yards of him, but failed to bring him down. We lunched at Cefn Braich and I then walked over to [Dolgemellydd =?Dolmelynllyn?], where we saw 3 Cock , but they were as wild as hawks, and I only had one snap shot, and that was as I was getting over a stone wall. Saturday January 9th A wet looking morning. We started by the 8.40 train to Bala, to shoot over a celebrated Snipe bog belonging to Price of Rhiwlas: we drove up to Rhiwlas and started with Price to the bog about 11 o`clock. It is a most awfull [sic] place to shoot in as you have to wade up to your knees in water and I had the misfortune to fall in up to my middle. Really it was too late in the year for the bog, and we were hardly surprised when we barely flushed twenty snipe: for the Snipe at this time of the year always leave the bogs. I was however, lucky enough to shoot a fine specimen of the Bittern [tanlinellwyd] which Price kept for preservation. Price did not go into the bog, but kept on the road, and did not kill anything. After a very good lunch, the Minor and I Iwith Mr B shot our way back to Rhiwlas, and killed 5 Rabbits; a snipe and a teal; the latter out of a flock; which the Minor banged into far above his head with No. 8 shot. Price kindly lent us a change of clothes, as we were very wet, and after a very jolly day we returned home by the 6 o`clock train ME & LE Snipe 8 (4 Jacks). Partridges 2 Teal 1 Sarnau. Bog. Rhiwlas. Monday January 11th I started by the 8.50 train from Dolgellau for some Snipe shooting with Osmond Williams at Deudraeth Castle. I arrive there about 11 o`clock, started out to shoot on the Traeth about 12 o`clock. It was a bad day for shooting Snipe, the light being bad and the weather close and muggy. We used an Irish setter who had a first-rate nose, but `pottered`: and a retriever pup. Snipe were not plentiful, and, except the `jacks` were very wild. We saw a great many duck: and Osmond killed the Widgeon [sic] with a wire cartridge. A man called White was with us all day, but he seemed never to have had a gun in his hand before.
