Tuesday April 6th I had breakfast at 9.30. i drove into Dolgelley with the Squire at 10.30: to "Quarter Sessions", in order to qualify as a JP for the county.... had a bad sore throat... I got home at 11.30 and started to fish up the river at 12.30: and the river was in good order: but the day was rather bright and too windy. I fished till 2.30, when I thought I might do better at Llyn Cynwych [sic], so I accordingly walked up there; and had a little sport: as I caught 3 good trout, and rose 8: one of these fish - about 3/4lb gave me a good bit of sport as I hooked him by the fin. Heavy rain fell this evening, and I only just escaped a ducking, and got home by seven o`clock. My throat was so bad this evening I had to go to bed early and doctor myself. Friday April 9th My throat was considerably better today [sal ers y 6ed] so that I was enabled to get out and do some fishing. After breakfast at 9.30 I took my rod up the Clwyedoc [sic Clywedog] but no doubt owing to the cold, the trout would not rise at all, and when I came in to lunch i only had four small trout. After lunch I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] with my waders on and got up there about 3 o`clock. There was a strong Nor`easter blowing: however i caught two nice trout; and came back in time for dinner at 7 o`clock. I went to bed early: doing some Divinity during the evening. Clwyedoc [sic] Trout 4 Llyn Cynwych [sic] 2 Cow dung and Blue Dun.

Saturday April 10th The Minor arrived this morning by the first train down, having slept at Corwen on his way down from Chester. After breakfast at 9 o`clock, we started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic], Chaplin taking the boat up there in the cart. It was a fine day, but the wind was bitterly cold from the east, and soon after we began fishing, we had too much of it. The Minor fished from the boat; while I fished from the shore. The Minor caught two:fish: and rose five losing two owing to the strong wind. I only rose two and caught one After lunch as the wind did not get better: and after we had tried a minnow in vain, we started down to the river: and we met at Dolgun by mutual consent soon after 6. The Minor had 23 trout and I 47. Mother and Wynne arrived from Plas Derw this evening. Llyn Cynwych Trout 3 Wnion - 70.

Sunday april 11th a cold and fine day with a dry east wind blowing
Monday April 12th A fine day. I got up this morning at 6 o`clock: and was out on the river before 7: and fished down from below the house, to the meeting of the waters. It was a bright and sunny morning: but my sport was not much. The Minor went up early to Llyn Cynwych: I came in at 9 o`clock and had breakfast at 9.30 and started back to Oxford by the 10.40 train Trout ME 30 on Wnion. Saturday June 5th Davies came up this morning at 8 o`clock: and we started to Crogennan Lakes: I walked there from Dolgelley and began fishing about 10 o`clock. The weather was very fine in the morning, but it rained pretty heavily in the afternoon: and the fish never rose well all day. I fished most of the day in the boat, and caught but few in the smaller lake. I met Kempson up there, and he had little support. I walked all the way home and had some [cricket] with the servants when I got in .... sat down to dinner at about 8.30 Trout (Llyn Crogennan) 28 all under 1/4lb

Monday June 7th I started over to Talyllyn to stay there for two or three days: but the weather was far from encouraging: it blew very hard and heavy rain came down, and I had a very wet walk over there. I easily got a room: but had some difficulty about getting the boat, and Davies and I had to content ourselves with a very heavy one: which would rather bad luck: as we were regularly [blown?] off the lake in the afternoon: and I hardly fished at all. Tuesday June 8th It was very fine and bright all day, but a strong westerly wind was blowing. I had a couple of hours fishing before breakfast but did not good [sic] and I began again at 10 o`clock and fished very hard all day. The trout rose badly, but I had some luck in getting hold of a good trout of 1lb 3oz. My other fish were also a good size, running up to 3/4lb pound. Davies left me at six o`clock this evening, and drove home, as he wanted to be at his house this eveningIt was a beautiful evening; and when the breeze dropped the trout began rising well but I did little good. We dined at 7o`clock and fished for eels afterwards, but caught none. There were clouds of a minute fly along the side of the Lake which from a distance resembled white smoke: the fly is I think the Jenny Spinner: and they say i a sure sign of rain. Wednesday June 9th I went out to have a bath in the Lake at 7.30: and rowed across the Lake but it was not very pleasant, as heavy rain came on. Luckily Davies joined me with my mackintosh: having driven over this morning. I caught two trout before breakfast and might have had a very good day`s sport: but I was dreadfully unlucky in losing some good fish, and I cannot tell how it was. The wind came on much too strong this afternoon: and I gave up fishing about 5 o`clock, as I was anxious to get back to dine at Caerynwch I walked home from the bottom of the Pass: and dressed: and then drove up to Caerynwch for 7.30 dinner.... I walked down the torrent [sic] with a lantern as it was very dark. Trout (Talyllyn) 9 Flies: Partridge and yellow alder &c = 23 trout for the days.

Thursday June 10th A windy and showery day. Davies and I started off in Llyn Llymry [sic ] today, the 8.40 train dropping us at the top of the incline: and we walked up from there, and a very wet walk we had as it rained very heavily. The trout were rising well to the natural when I got to the lake, but they would not look at my flies: and I could do little good, but odd to say, that out of the four fish i caught, two I caught at once.About 3.30 we determined to go down to the Twrch: which was in good order for a fly: and had I had more time, I might have caught a good basket of trout, as it was, we had a regular [bustle] to catch the train [owen] arrival at Dolserau .... Friday June 11th A cold and showery day. We breakfasted at 8 o`clock, and as the Wnion was partly in flood; I went out to fish it in the hopes of getting hold of a Sewin, and I did hook a good fish in the pool below Llyn Goch [sic], but whether it was a Sewin or not, it was hard to say; but the fish got among some roots and got off. After lunch at Llyn Goch [sic] I determined to go up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] and try for Perch: which I accordingly did, but so strong and cold was the wind, we could do no good,Davies alone catching one Perch of about 1/2lb. I met Kempson up there, but he was not fishing. I tried for trout with a fly for a short time, but only rose two: hooking one. Saturday June 12th A fine day; but cold. I went by the 8.50 train from Dolgelley to Arthog and Davies and I walked up to Llyn Crogennan from there, and reached the Lake about 10 o`clock. It was rather too windy for successful fishing; and the trout were not rising much all day, but I picked up some nice trout fishing in the smaller lake offshore; most of the fish I caught weighed about 1/4lb and I had a very respectable basket by the end of the day.We started from Crogennan about 6 o`clock, and we had to wait at Arthog station more than an hour for the 7 o`clock train, which was an hour late. Sunday June 13th Very wet morning, which brought down a flood in the river: we did not go to Church, but I went out during the morning to see the pheasants. After lunch I went up the river, which came down in flood very suddenly; and I walked around by Bont Newydd. It cleared up about 2 o`clock; and turned rather cold this evening. We dined at 7.30. Total trout killed from June 5th to June 12th

Monday June 14 I fished the Wnion today - continuing at 6 o`clock: going out before breakfast - which was in good order: owing to the very heavy showers of rain which fell all day: and which was followed by a very hot sun in the afternoon. Thursday June 17th Read all the morning till 2 o`clock when we lunched, and I then went out to fish the river, which was in good order, and as the day was mild, I had great hopes of catching a Sewin. But suddenly a very heavy fall of rain came on: which caused the river to rise gradually: and I then fished the small pool opposite Dolserau farm; and there [stuck] in a Sewin of about 4lb: but having only a trout rod and light tackle, he gave me a regular half hours job: the river rising rapidly and the stream being very strong. The fish was well hooked, but having no landing net, I thoroughly [mauled?] him in my hands, and he broke away much to my disgust. The river came down in heavy flood afterwards, and I had good sport with a worm at Dolgun pool and the meeting of the waters: I also tried the Ford Pool with a Fly later on; and did not get in to dinner till 8.15. Trout (Wnion) 16, one of which weighed 1/2lb. The sewin was hooked on a large "coch-y-bonddhu [bonddu]".

Friday June 18th The wind was northerly, and it was a beautiful day. As the river was in good order. I went out after breakfast, and fished till 2 o`clock: and had capital sport with the trout: catching some very good ones: although I did not meet Sewin: then it was very bright. I fished as far as Bont-newydd, and managed to get in for 2 o`clock lunch and then read from 2.30 till 6.30. Afterwards I went down to see the pheasants..... We dined at 8.15 Trout (Wnion) 52

Saturday June 19th ...after lunch I ran up above Bontnewydd, and fished upstream, but found the river rather too full to fish the big pools, so I went farther up, and fished to Pont Rhiadyr: where as it began to rain: I gave up: and walked back to Bontnewydd station, intending to meet Coxe at BNC: but as the train was very late, and I was wet: I walked home: and Coxe arrived alright: about 7 o`clock. Tuesday June 23rd A mild day. After lunch at 1.30 we walked up to Bontnewydd and began fishing for trout there, and I fished upstream and caught 40 trout, Hamilton 4, and Coxe, who watched me fishing most of the time, none. A heavy drizzle came on this evening, and we had a wet walk home. After dinner at 8 o`clock we went to the billiard room.

Thursday June 24th ....after lunch Hamilton, Coxe and I drove into Dolgelley, and walked up to Crogennan from there: in order to have a look at our boat, which had been damaged there. I put up my rod, but fished very little, as a thick fog came on, although it was fine and hot. After examining the boat cover and Coxe bathed we walked down to Arthog station and caught the 5.45 train to Dolgelley, and when we reached Dolserau, we had a good hour`s practice at cricket. Weather was fine and mild.

Friday june 25th We lunched at 2 o`clock: after which we went out fishing: and I fished up to Bontnewydd, but could do but little good, as the river was very low. Mr Lewis, the Rector and Mr Hoddesdon met me on the train during the afternoon, and the latter stayed to fish. From Bontnewydd, I walked up to the Big Covert to see the young pheasants 113 of which we`re taken up last night. Coxe, at the Big Pool, saw an otter , as he was fishing, which she tried to track, though unsuccessfully with [??]. Trout (Wnion) 28. Coxe also caught some trout.

Saturday June 26th I read for 3 hours this morning, before starting to attend Petty Sessions at 11 o`clock in Dolgelley, and took my seat on the Bench for the first time, as a magistrate of the county. Coxe and Hamilton came in with me, and as business was not onerous; we got back to Dolserau about 1 o`clock. The Squire started away to Birmingham this afternoon. I, immediately, went out fishing, and began above the Helugog [sic] Pools: and had some capital sport fishing upstream as far as [Fire?]-newydd Mill. I had a pretty heavy load of fish to walk home with, and got in just in time to dress for dinner at 8 o`clock. After dinner we played billiards. Trout (Wnion) 76 caught in 5 hours.

Sunday June 27th A showery day, but mild. I got up at 8.30: and had a bathe in the Big Pool before breakfast: and it was very jolly. After lunch I set up the aquarium, and Coxe, Hamilton and I walked down to the Llwyn fields to catch animals, but it was very wet, we did not stay long. I walked down Dolgun this evening to look at the river which was inclined to rise: a good deal of rain hanging about.
