The river was again in good order, owing to rain during the night, and i went out fishing about 6 o`clock: and commenced just below the house: and did no good until I came to the still water: below Dolgun: where I caught two trout (the two weighing a lb & 2oz) and I believe I rose to Sewin there. I was in for 8 o`clock breakfast: and the Squire arrived by the first train from Corwen this morning, and the Minor also arrived from Ireland by the 12 o`clock train. After lunch, having read all the morning, the Minor and Coxe went out fishing on the Wnion: while I went up the Clwyedog [sic]. Heavy showers fell this afternoon: and the weather was very close and foggy. I caught 9 trout colon and found the fishing very hard owing to the trees..... Clwyedog (Trout) 9

Wednesday June 30th I did not read before breakfast this morning: the Minor started early by the Coach to fish up the Mawddach: and after we had done our reading: and had lunch at 1.30: Hamilton, Coxe, and I started over by Nannau to Gelli y gemlyn [sic], where we met him at 3 o`clock: having had no sport: and rather "down in the mouth". However we set to work again: and the Minor hooked a good Sewin just below Bryn Cemlyn: which jumped off: and I was unfortunate in losing a fine grilse of quite 4lb: which I hooked at the Meeting of the WateDavies was with me, and we were all ready with the landing net: but the fish kicked off just when I thought it was safe. We went up to Cornelius` Pool, where we saw a few small fish jumping up the Fall, and then as it was late we started homewards: and I and Hamilton walked across the hill, getting in the same time as they did; and we sat down to dinner soon after 8 o`clock: after rather an unlucky day`s fishings.

Monday July 1st A hot and close day. I read before breakfast: and we lunched at 1.30: and then started in the phaeton: and walking up to the Meeting of the Waters met the Minor there: but he had no sport. Soon after I began fishing I smashed my rod to atoms as I was getting over a wall, as a huge rock fell on it: and smashed it at the but. I was very much cut up as it is a beautiful rod Coxe, who bathed in Cornelius` Pool, lent me my small trout rod and we fished for Trout for a short time, but only caught a few. As we missed Hamilton, Lloyd stayed for him: at Tyn y groes with Jack, and the phaeton; and Coxe and I walked across the hill: and got in in time for dinner: and the others got back not so late. The Minor rose a Sewin in this morning: but that was the only one we saw. Trout (Mawddach) about 12

Friday July 2nd We read till 2 o`clock this morning. The Minor went to Barmouth to have a drive back by Coach: while Hamilton, Coxe, and I went over to Caerynwch moor with Bang: and saw some young grouse there, and I believe there were two lots only I did not like disturbing them, so took Bang off. We played cricket when we came back: and at 7.30 I should of gone with the Squire and the Minor to dine at Caerynwch, but I felt so unwell that I did not go. Saturday July 3rd The Minor and cox went over to Talyllyn today with Bridgeman, who is staying at Caerynwch. I read hard all the morning till 1.30: when after lunch, I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [ sic] , and fished for Trout, but unfortunately just I was getting a little sport, my rod broke at one of the joints and I was obliged to go to a cottage to borrow a knife: and then returned to the lake: and I had, when I gave up fishing, at 7.15, 4 trout and Perch. The Minor had good sport at Talyllyn, viz. 23 trout, 20 of which he caught. I read for an hour this evening, before going to bed. ME Trout Llyn Cynwych 4, Perch 1 LE &c. Talyllyn Trout 23

Sunday July 4th Coxe and I got up to bathe at 8.45 .... The water was delicious. It was a glorious day: wind NE and with every appearance of fine weather. I did not go to Church this morning, but knocked about catching butterflies. After lunch, Coxe, the Minor, Hamilton and I went to the Big Pool, where Coxe and I bathed, and we washed the dogs. I also went as far as Bontnewydd after butterflies. We had tea on the lawn at 6 o`clock, and dined at 8. It was a beautiful evening.

Monday July 5th Read all the morning till 1.30: when we had lunch and afterwards I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] to fish there; but as the sun came out very bright and hot, I could not rise the trout, and I only caught one Trout, and two Perch. The Minor had good sport on the river with the trout; and managed to catch a fine Sewin in the crooked pool. I came back about 6 o`clock to play some cricket: but as there was none going on, I went out to shoot some rabbits. The Squire, Hamilton and I dined at Caerynwch at 7.30 driving up in the Pony carriage.. Trout (Wnion) LE 82 sea trout 1 [2 and 3 quarter pounds] ME (Llyn Cynwych) Trout 1 Perch 2

Tuesday July 6th A very fine and hot day. The Minor with Mr Greatbatch, the lawyer, started with Bethell and Lewis Pugh up to Maes-y-gamddai to see the extent and boundaries of the land at dispute; and to collect evidence. We read till 2 o`clock: when after lunch I went for a walk with my butterfly net: and had a very hot walk over Caerynwch hill to the moor: where I saw two old grouse and three young ones. When I came back: we played cricket: and the Minor joined in later, having had a hard day`s walking. We bathed in Dolgun pool before dinner. Thursday July 8th a fine and hot day. Coxe was bad with Neuralgia all day so he did not read this morning. At 2 o`clock I went up to join Coxe and the Minor eel-sniggling at the Helugog [sic] pools. I met them at the viaduct; and the Minor had a good many eels: and had lost a good Sewin with worm in the Ford Pool. I did not stay with them long, but started off to Coedmaeswglog, and had a good long walk over the moor, but I was disappointed with the grouse: only seeing two birds, and Lewis, who I went down to see afterwards told me to me of a covey of 6, and also of a lot of young partridgesI returned home by the railway, meeting the Minor, and I bathed at the Big Pool.... Friday July 9th: a wet day and at times very misty. Read all the morning: and the Minor came in to lunch at 1.30 having caught nothing, the river rising but slowly. After lunch we went out: and fished up the river, but it rose very slowly, and was a bad colour. So we returned to Dolgun: and the Clwyedoc [sic] suddenly came down: and about 6 o`clock the Wnion, and there was a raging high flood, but we could do nothing with the worm except catch a few trout. Thursday July 15 I went out fishing on the Wnion at 6.30 this morning, but did no good, and as the rain continued I determined to have a day on the Mawddach, accordingly the Minor and I drove over to Tyn y groes: and found the river very high, but in good colour for fly, and gradually falling. We began at Tyn y groes bridge and fished up, and I must say, had wretched luck all day, as we lost at least six sea trout before lunch: I losing a very good fish at the "Railings". The Minor caught one of 2 [and 3 quarter pounds] in the "Long Hat". After lunch we walked up the Mawddach a long way to fish down, on our way we met Colonel Romer, who had caught a 10lb Salmon on the Eden: the Minor rose a salmon twice, and then called me, and I saw him rise it a third time, and then he changed his flies, and rose him a fourth [tanlinellwyd] and just pricked him: I made sure we should catch him. I caught two Sea Trout and these are the only fish we met all the way to Tyn y groes. I started home across the hill, with the fish at seven o`clock, and got in at 8: and left the Minor at Tyn y groes, as he stayed there the night. Sea Trout (Mawddach) 3 (1) 2 [and 3 quarter pounds] (1) 1lb 5 5ozs (1) 1lb 2ozs

Sunday July 18th A fine day though very close..... At about 12.30 Hamilton, Coxe and I started for a walk to the Falls of the Mawddach,.... we might have gone up through Llanfacreth [sic] a much shorter way: we did not go through the Deer Park on account of the dogs being with us. We reached to the Tyn y groes Tun at 3 o`clock, and had lunch there, and just as we came out we met the Romer party, and they asked us to drag a bath chair with a young lady in it right up to the Dolmelyn llyn [sic] Falls which we did, though much to our discomfort: stopped so after we had bathed we started home, and got in about 9 o`clock.
