Monday August 2nd A fine and hot day. Hamilton went away today. I started off alone to fish the Cader Lakes and after a stiff walk, I reached Llyn Arran at 10 o`clock and as there was a great rise of the trout I had capital sport, although the sun came out rather too bright towards the middle of the day. About 1 o`clock I walked over to Llyn y Cader [sic] but could do little there, as another man was fishing it: so i returned to Llyn Arran, and caught a few more trout before starting away at 5 o`clock. I did not take long getting home, and walked up to the gate to meet the carriage with Don who arrived today. We dined soon after 8 o`clock. Trout Llyn Arran 44 Llyn y Cader 8 = 52

Wednesday August 4 I got up at 7 o`clock and fished before breakfast, but only caught two trout, and I left my boat at the head of the lake, and walked up to it after breakfast at 9 o`clock. The breeze kept up well all day till about 3.30: and I took advantage of it and fished hard till then when I had lunch. I caught one good trout (18oz) by the rushes which gave me great sport. I killed with the same flies as yesterday, and heavy showers fell during the day. I did not good [sic] after lunch and gave up about 4.30 and started homewards on foot luckily picking a bag up at Minffordd to help me home with my fish, which was no light load. I got in about 7.15, and after dinner the Minor and I started back to Talyllyn in a car; which the Minor had met in Dolgelley: and which came from Tyn y cornell. We got there about 11 o`clock Talyllyn (Trout) (1) 18oz

Thursday August 5th The Minor and I were out about 7.30: as there was next to no breeze we only caught two trout. We left our boat at the head of the Lake and walked back to breakfast at 9 o`clock: and then set to work again. Unfortunately th thee breeze blew the wrong way for the big fish, viz. down the Lake: and the trout hardly rose at all, and we had to work hard to get our basket...... It looks very like rain towards the end of the day. We had a bath just before dinner at 6 o`clock: and fish afterwards till it was quite dark, but only caught trout, although I hooked two or three others. Trout Talyllyn (Trout) 22 killed with various flies.

Friday August 6th It looked very like a wet day this morning, but it cleared off: and the wind went round to the east and was very strong. We went out for breakfast and killed one trout. The wind blew much too strong for successful fishing, and the Lake was very rough. We found the fish rising best at the bottom of the Lake, but they were of no size: the Minor alone getting hold of a good fish in the Burn Bay, but he [gutred] off; breaking his fly in the rope which attached to the stone [?]. We fished till 5 o`clock, and then walked home, sending our things by a carriage to Dolgelley. Trout [Talyllyn] 27

Saturday August 7th I went into Dolgelley this morning to attend petty sessions; but as there was little business, I got home by 12 o`clock. I had been out for an hour or so with a gun after the rabbits, and killed two. After lunch I started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic]: the weather was close and dull, and there was hardly any breeze: consequently although the trout will rising very freely, I could only rise two which I caught, and I also caught another good trout fishing for Perch with minnow: the latter would not bite at all. Heavy showers of rain fell: and they stopped the trout rising, a so I went home. The Minor went on the Coach to Barmouth. Rabbits 3 Llyn Cynwych trout 3

Sunday August 8th A fine day. The Minor and I bathed before breakfast, and saw an enormous fish in the Pool with a wound of some sort or other just above the tail.... This afternoon we played a good deal of lawn tennis, and I walked around by Bont newydd to Llyn Goch [sic] and had bathe No. 2: and then went up to see the pheasants which are doing well....

Monday August 9th Heavy rain fell this morning, so the Minor and I got up to fish: but the river did not rise very quickly, and as the rain stopped we did no fishing before breakfast. Afterwards we went by rail to Drws-y-nant to fish down, and the river was much discolored, but had not risen more than a foot or so. We had a very heavy thunderstorm in the middle of the day, but not much rain: however, the Sewin would not rise at all, so I gave up about 2 o`clock and had a walk to Llyn Cynwych, and got there about 4: but as the rain came on I went down to the Wnion again, and tried the Ford Pool and Crooked Pool without success. The Squire went to a Festival at Barmouth today. Don and Nelly started to Balhail by the 8.40 train. Trout (Wnion) 116

Tuesday August 10th We had very heavy rain today and the Wnion came down in heavy flood. We did not go over to the Mawddach, but fished the Wnion with worm, going up above Bontnewydd, and also as far as the Mill Pool towards Dolgellau, but owing to the high flood, we could do little good, and the Ford Pool was the only place where we met fish, killing two Sewin, and losing two others, but they were small. The rain stopped about 2 o`clock, and the river was gradually clearing for fly, when we had to give up, and the Minor hooked a nice fish at the tail end of Llyn Goch [sic] Sea trout (Wnion) 2

Wednesday August 11th The Minor and I started to Dolgelley at 6 o`clock, and took a car to Tyn y groes. After some breakfast we fished up, and the river was in good order for Fly, but the day was quite spoilt by the sun. I caught a nice Sewin just below the [round?] wooden bridge on the Mawddach, and the Minor had three smaller ones. We went right up to the Falls, and I left the Minor about 3 o`clock and walked home, as I wanted to meet Arkwright who was coming to shoot with us. Squire came with me to Bontnewydd but the train did not stop, and we had to go all the way to the Dolgelley, and met Arkwright there. The weather looked unsatisfactory for shooting tomorrow. Sea trout (Mawddach) 4 (1) 1 [and a half pounds]

Thursday August 12th Arkwright, the Minor and I had breakfast at 7.30: and when Hughes joined us, we started up to Caerynwch moor to commence shooting there. The morning looked fine enough, but by the time we had beaten Caerynwch moor heavy thunder clouds appeared, and on our way up to Penantigi and Maesygamddai, a raging storm came on, and we reached Penantigi wet to the skin, and enveloped in mist. We found a fine covey of birds on Caerynwch moor but were unlucky with it and we found two coveys on Penantigi but we could do little shooting here owing to the mist. On reaching Maesygamddai we were reasonably surprised to find two of Sir Edmunds Buckley`s keepers there, having shot over Maesygamddai, so much disgusted we went down to Penantigi farm to lunch, which was a sumptuous one, and Mother brought it up to us. Afterwards we walked on to a piece of heather belonging to Griffith P. Williams, found a small covey there and shot a brace, and then ended up a very hard days walk at Caerynwch moor, where we found the covey which beat us in the morning and killed two brace of them. When we got home we bathed in the river, in the Pool at the bottom of the house. The Bishop of Bangor came to stay here for a night and Mr Lewis and Mr Hughes dined here. Friday August 13th We started by the 8.40 train to shoot at Drws-y-nant, but owing to the thick mist on the hills we went off to Cae coch and with great difficulty found our way there. Saddler walked with us. Of course shooting was out of the question, and till lunch time we could do little good. However about 2 o`clock the mist cleared, and we could see what we were about. We found two coveys on Cae Coch, but they were very wild: we then crossed over to Drws y nant and found a good covey there, but we were unlucky with it. We gave up an unsatisfactory days shooting about 5 o`clock, and went to the Tun and had tea. Mother met us with the carriage at 6 o`clock. The dogs worked fairly today considering the weather. We bathed at Dolgun Pool when we got home. Grouse (Cae Coch & Drws y nant) 6 Snipe 2

Saturday August 14th Arkwright, the Minor, and I started by the 8.40 train to shoot at Drws y nant, and Kinzey and the watcher met us at the station with the dogs. We had a dreadfully disappointing morning, so we beat all Litterygwyn [sic] and Escegair [sic], and only saw about 7 birds! Much disgusted we had lunch, and then I started with Kinsey right to the top of the hill to look for a large covey: while Arkwright, and the Minor went on, on the lower ground. I only saw one old cock grouse, which I did not get a shot at, and then joined them, and they had found more birds: and several snipe. We had hardly beaten 100 yards of heather when we put up two coveys, and the shepherd put up another on Litterygwyn: and these birds we must have passed in the morning. There could not have been a worse scenting day, as it was damp, misty, and without wind. We felt easier when we saw these birds, as we might have gone home at lunch time, and said every covey had been netted on the ground. We were very tired this evening. Mother met us at Drws y nant station at 6 o`clock. Grouse (Drws y nant) 10 Snipe 4

Monday August 16th The river was in fair order for small flies, so the Minor and I went out fishing, but about 11 o`clock so bright did the sun get that we gave up immediately: I having risen 3 Sewin and caught one. We started about 11.30 to shoot at Penantigi and Maesygamdda, and then set to work, and as there was a good scent we soon found our birds. The first covey of four we got, but were unlucky with another 7 or 8 birds: the Minor alone shooting at them, killing one and [.... ?]. We then went on to Maesygamdda, and found some birds there, shooting 1 [1/2] brace: but the birds were rather wild. We then trudged home, pretty well content without our days sport: and calling at Caerynwch, left two brace of birds there. Grandmamma arrived today. Tuesday August 17th A wet day. I went down to the crooked pool and fishing with small flies, hooked a 3lb sewin on a red spinner, and after an exciting tussle of 20 minutes the Minor landed him for me. We then fished up with fly, and I caught a smaller one:- and by the time we reached the Helygog pools the river came down and we separated, and fished with worm, and met again at the Ford Pool; had the Minor some more hooks he would have done better, but he was broken by a big fish. We took to fly again towards evening, but the river was rather too high, but I caught a nice fish of 2lb on the [Popham]. Sea Trout (Wnion) 8 (1) 3 lbs (2) 2 lbs Trout about 50 and two eels.

Saturday August 18th The Minor and I got up about 5 o`clock, and walked into Dolgelley and took a car to Tyn y groes: John Davies coming with us. After we had had some breakfast, we started out to fish, and found the river in good order, but of a very dark colour. Unfortunately our chance of sport was ruined by a glaring hot sun nearly all day, and although we fished a long way up the Mawddach the Minor alone got a small Sewin. I started home across the hill about six o`clock. The Minor stayed until 8 with Hugh Jones, in the hopes of catching a fish when the sun went down, but he did no good..... Sea Trout (Mawddach) 1

Thursday August 19th A fine day. Millais, the Minor and I went up to Drws y nant by the 8.40 train to shoot over the moor. Unfortunately they were sheep gathering on Esgegawr [Esgairgawr]: and of course greatly disturbed the grouse. We found plenty of snipe: but did little with the grouse before lunch; but afterwards we found two or three good coveys: and made up our bag to four brace. A heavy shower of rain came on just as we finished up shooting, and as I got very wet. I walked home, catching Millais who had gone on before. Friday August 20th The Minor went up to Chester today to be medically examined: I had intended to fish the river today but the weather was so bright I gave up the idea, and after the Coach had started to Coedmaeswglog, and met John Davies with Don there [sic]. Charlie Owen, whom I met at Bont Rhidyr [Rhaeadr] gave me leave to go over Gethli [sic Gelli] Farm, and here i found most of the birds I saw, but they were very wild and did not shoot up to form. We came across a covey of at least 12 birds after lunch on Gethli, but I could only get a long shot at them, and we never found them again. I gave up shooting soon after 2 o`clock, walked home, and paid at the Big Pool on my way. I went out to try for a Sewin when the sun went down; I rose two in the Ford Pool, and two in the Pool in the hollow, one of which i killed. The Minor returned from Chester at 10 o`clock. Smith of Hengwrt asked us to shoot with him at Drws y nant today, so we went up by train, and had to wait about an hour, as Smith and Nicholson drove from Hengwrt. We had three brace of birds by lunch time at 1.30. and did not find any very large coveys, excepting one of 12 birds which was wild, and we did not see it again: we gave up shooting about 5.45: and caught the train to Drws y nant, which took us to Dolgelley, and we walked from there home..... Wednesday August 25th There was every appearance of a wet day, and so we started in the coach to Llanelltyd to fish the Mawddach, but hardly had we started when the rain stopped, and it came quite fine, but very windy. When we got to Llanelltyd, river was too low, so, after a consultation with Hugh Jones we started for the Black Pools. Walking to Tyn y groes and taking Thorntons dog cart on for 3 miles, and we walked the rest of the way, and began fishing about 11.30. There was a strong breeze on the pools but the water was very low, and we did no good, neither did we on the Eden, which we fished on our way down. a heavy storm of rain came on as we started home wards and I walked from Tyn y groes across the hill by Nannau in 50 minutes, and reached home at 7.45.

We found very few birds, but then they were gathering sheep on the mountain, and had no doubt driven some birds off. Saturday August 28 We started about nine o`clock to shoot on Penantigi and Maesygamdda, wishing to go to the latter place in order to find out about a mine which we heard had been opened by Sir EB. We went over Caerynwch Moor, Kinsey having started before is with the dogs, and Bob the Watcher came with us carrying the lunch. We found seven birds on Caerynwch moor, as we walked across it, and killed one. We met Kinsey at the top of Penantigi, and soon found a covey of birds but they were wretchedly small, and not worth the shooting. However, I killed two, and this was the only covey we found on Penantigi. We then went on to Maesygamdda, and lunched there, and began shooting after lunch, and put up a fine pack of birds very wild, and we never found them again. The Minor killed an old bird; and we found no more, and went down Penantigi Hill: and this knocked poor Kinsey up, so the Minor and I went on to Caerynwch moor alone, but found no birds, except killing a snipe. We got in very tired..... Grouse (Caerynwch Penantigi & Maesygamdda) 4. Snipe 1

Wednesday September 1st As I did not feel quite fit enough to shoot, and there is little corn cut, we did not go out shooting today, and lucky we did not as it turned out a wretched day, a drizzling rain falling all day. The Minor and I drove over to Talyllyn with the grey mare and phaeton, and expected a good day`s sport there, but there was not an atom of breeze in the morning so we had to wait till nearly 1 o`clock, when we had lunch, and then went out on the lake, a nice breeze springing up. However our sport was indifferent, although the trout were inclined to rise to the August Dun [Ecdyonurus dispar (Harris 1952): we gave up fishing before 5 o`clock and drove home. Trout (Talyllyn) 10
