A fine day.... drove up to Blaenau to shoot there. We could not find any partridges in the morning so we walked up the mountain to look for some grouse which had been seen.... had a long walk right across Botel to a snipe marsh but we did not see so many as we expected - flushing six all very wild.... We then walked back to Braich Beddw [sic] where we had lunch and then looked for partridges but only saw two which we shot . Padwick brought his setter later on, but we found nothing else but a hare, which I shot. Partridges 2 Snipe 1 Hare 1

Friday September 8.... after lunch we went after some partidges I saw this morning; we put some of them up in a thick covert, but without success.... weekend Chester, where we had supper, Crewe and Carlisle. It rained nearly all the night.

It mild and dull day. It was a whole school day, being the last day of the half. After 12 I played my last game in [?] and Gullivers and we had a capital one, the two [?] Charlesworth, Reade, … playing; only the ground was tremendously heavy. We were in great confusion packing up afterwards.

The Xmas holidays began today. Lloyd and I started by the 9:40 from Windsor, and met the 10 o’ clock express at Reading; and also our people…; we had a very pleasant journey down, and from Ruabon to Corwen the [?], Wynne, and I travelled on the engine. We arrived at Bont Newydd at about 6 so the train being rather late; and sat down to dinner at Dolserau at 7; and went to bed early as we were all tired.

We found one in the small covert near Johns cottage but did not get a shot, but killed one in the covert beyond. We then turned towards… and put up another cock, but did not get a good chance. We then lunched at the [snipe] marsh below the [?] where we killed a Jack. After lunch we went on to the [?] but after a very long walk we found a Jack, which Lloyd killed. We saw two hares before lunch, one of which I am sorry to say the [ellion/Minor?] wounded- we went home through [Dolgwn]; and were at Dolserau by 5 o’clock. Saturday december 16th 1871 It was a beautiful day; and the sun quite hot. .....with our guns and John Ellis to look for a woodcock. We found one in the small covert near John`s cottage but did not get a shot, but I killed one in the covert beyond. We then lunched at the snipe marsh below the Mines where we killed a Jack. After lunch we went on to the Mines but after a very long walk we only found a Jack, which Lloyd killed. We saw two hares before lunch, one of which I`m sorry to say the Minor wounded stop. We went home through Dolgun; and were at Dolserau by 5 o`clock. It was a very clear evening, and inclined to frost. Woodcock 1 Jack Snipe 2 Redwing 1

It was a dull and wet day... After lunch the weather looked like rain; but I started over [Nannau] Park to Hengwrt, as I particularly wished to see Evan Jones the Keeper and our Spaniels. The [?] drove round through Dolgelly in the Phaeton and arrived at Hengwrt exactly the same time as I did. Jones was unfortunately out, but we left word that he was to be at Dolserau by 9 o’clock tomorrow morning. I was very glad to get a drive back in the Phaeton as I was very foot sore…

We began by beating the big covert above the house, out of which we flushed 2 woodcock and several pheasants; the rain soon began to come down in torrents with a strong westerly gale, which completely spoilt our days shooting. The [?] shot our only woodcock near Perith Llwgddion, and we beat as far as the cottages where we lunched at 1:30. Sunday December 17th It was a dark and wet day. Breakfast was at 10, and at 11 o`clock we all drove to church. After lunch the weather looked like rain.....
Monday December 18th We breakfasted at 8.30; and made a start out shooting with Evan Jones, Kenzie and out two [clumber] spaniels Dash and Fan. We began by beating the big covert above the house, out of which we flushed two woodcock and several pheasants; the rain soon began to come down in torrents with a strong westerly gale, which completely spoilt our day`s shooting. The Minor shot our only Woodcock near [Perith Llwyddion], and we beat as far as the cottages where we lunched at 1.30.We came home early, soon after 3, as it was useless going on in such bad weather, and the wind towards evening became a regular gale. It turned out a most unfortunate day; as we only found two cock; and were very unlucky with the pheasants which were very hard to get within shot, but I do not think we met with more than 10 of them. It was simply hailing, raining, and blowing as hard as it could; but by 9.30 the storm somewhat abated and we went out with Kenzie and our spaniels for a walk. But it was very unpleasant work shooting, especially as we only saw one Woodcock; we ended our day by going to the wood on Caerynwch hill to wait for wood pigeons coming to roost, but the cold and wet drove us down again. Jones having gone on before us by rail… it was sometime before we could find Jones; but we fired a shot which told him our whereabouts in the thick covert. The [ellion] had a good chance at a cock soon after we began and killed; but before lunch which we had at the [twn?] we only saw one other; which we did not get a shot at although we beat to splendid coverts: after lunch we saw 3 more cock, but did not get a fair chance at them, and I killed a Hare. Jones carried again and killed a Hare and Partridge; we used his pointer and setter, which worked very well. Woodcock 1. Partridge 1. Hares 2.

It very mild day, but showery. We started at 9 o’clock to shoot about Blaenau, and put up the phaeton at the bottom of the hill. We only flushed two snipe on the Nanaw marsh, one of which we bagged: but we soon fell in with two [coveys?] of partridges which we marked down and bagged three. We then had a long walk over the mountain to the snipe marsh above Blaenau, but it was all for no good, as we only saw an old cock grouse about half a mile off. We then returned to Braich beddw where we had lunch at 2 o clock, and then went after partridges, and fell in with 3 separate [covies?]. As it was a fine evening, we waited in a wood till 5 o’clock for crows and magpies, and shot one of the latter. We saw 3 hares during the day. I walked home as far as Dolserau bridge. Partridges 5. Snipe 1. Magpie 1

Sunday December 24th very cloudy day semicolon wind in the south.
Monday December 25th Christmas Day with heavy rain, and a strong wind from the SW. The weather cleared up a little after we had breakfast,..... this afternoon I had a good walk through the deer Park to the top of Moel Offrwm, on which I saw 5 grouse and a hare, and then to Nannau lake. This evening at 7 o`clock, we had a regular family Xmas dinner..... in the evening we played "jungles".

I only had two shots at cock the whole day, but killed 2 hares. We were home early by 3 o’clock, but ended up by hunting rabbits in the open field with “jones”, “Roc”. The Rector, and the [Bunbuys’?] came to dinner this evening. Woodcock 3 Hares 2.
