Thursday September 2nd The Minor and I started to shoot at Coed Maeswglog [sic]: but hardly had we got there when heavy rain came on, which lasted all day. We found a fine covey of partridges, about 16 birds, in the turnips, but as the corn was not cut we could not follow them after we had put them up and scattered them, however we killed 3 brace: but one bird was unfortunately lost. We then started up after grouse; and had a very wet walk. Birds were wild, but we killed a brace and a snipe, and then gave up as the rain came down in torrents. We walked home after lunch at Coed Maeswglog Farm, and after changing: we went out fishing, and just caught the river in flood. But we only killed three Sewin. Rain continued all this evening, and the river rose to a great height. Partridges (Coed Maeswglog) 5 Grouse 2 Snipe 1 Sea Trout (Wnion) 3

Friday September 3rd The Minor went out fishing this morning on the Wnion, but as such terrific rain was falling I did not go out. [Roedd o wedi bod yn sal]. He caught one Sewin and lost 2 others. After breakfast at 8 o`clock, the Minor and I started to Tyn y groes: a very high flood coming down both rivers a great many fields being underwater. We began fishing at Gethi gemllyn Pool [sic]: where we caught about seven nice Sewin, and we then went up the river but did little till the morning [?], when the Minor caught some nice fish up the Mawddach, and a Grilse of 4 [and a half pounds]. I went up the Eden, but it was too high for fly. I only caught one Sewin. We fished up the Mawddach some way together, and tried some pools with fly on our way down, but the river was rather too high and discoloured. We reached home about 8.30 Sea trout (Mawddach) 14 (2) 2 lb (2) 1 [1/2] lbs grilse 1 4[and a half pounds] Wnion 1 Eden 1 = Sea trout 16 Grilse 1

Sunday September 5th A fine day Monday September 6th The Minor and I started to Palé by the 8.49 train for 2 days` shooting: and when we reached Landerfel [sic] Tom Sherriff joined us and we went on to Llandrillo and rode up to shoot grouse on the "[Scureato]". We did not begin shooting till 11.30, and began pretty well; although most of the birds we saw were old ones, and we found only one covey, which was wild. After lunch we had a bad time of it, as birds were very scarse [sic] and wild: we worked three dogs at a time, but scent was wretchedly bad. We rode home., and got to Palé about 7 o`clock: and dinner was at 7.30: but I was a bit knocked up, and was laid up with a bad headache. Grouse [The Scurreaw] 13 Guns 3...

Tuesday September 7th I felt a bit better today, and determined to go out shooting: Tom, the Minor and I went to Llandrillo partridge shooting, and as it was a beautifully fine day, we had a pleasant day`s shooting. Birds were not very plentiful, but what coveys we saw were large. We killed seven brace my lunch time, and 6 [and a half] brace afterwards. I had rather a bad headache all day, but shot pretty fairly. We met the 5.18 train at Llandrillo........ I was altogether knocked up this evening, and went to bed. Thursday September 9th All the others started off to Aberyswyth [sic] this morning for the Fancy Dress Ball at Colonel Powell`s: to which I was very sorry not to be able to go. I got up about 10.30, feeling much better, and went out, and met young Thomson, who is staying at Garth milan, with his rod, and so we went to the "Ford" and "crooked Pools", and tried them with fly, but it was too bright. Thompson came in to lunch, and we then fished a few pools down to Dolgun, but without success, and I then walked up to Garth milan with Thompson, and had tea there, and came down about six o`clock, and I was lucky enough to get two sewin, 1 at the Ford, the other at the crooked pool: and I then came in for 7.30 dinner. Monday September 13th A very fine and hot day, but there was a cool east wind blowing. The Minor and I went up by the 8.40 train to Drws y nant to shoot. We beat a good many farms on Drws y nant for partridges, without finding a bird, and then went on to Cae Coch, where we found a covey of only 4 birds! and soon after, another covey of a like number. This was not encouraging. We went up after lunch to look for grouse, and found some birds, but did not manage them properly, and only killed a brace. We killed 3 out of 4 birds in the second covey of partridges in the brush-wood; and then gave up and went to Drws y nant Tun for tea, and the Squire drove the Ladies up to meet us: and after a very comfortable tea we went home.

Tuesday September 14th A fine day, wind easterly. The Minor and I killed 9 partridges out of the covey of 15 in the Pack, and had very good fun. Afterwards, as I heard Pugh of Helwgog [sic] shooting, I went out and luckily saw him shoot at a covey of birds which flew across the boundary. John Davis and I found them in the wood, where they were very ungetateable, and I lost one bird, and gave them up as a bad job. I had a long ramble over Caerynwch hill, and round by Caerynwch, without seeing anything, except picking up a dead hare, lately shot. Partridges (Dolserau) 9 Hare 1

Wednesday September 15th I went into Dolgellau on the Coach and walk back to Dolserau ..... at 12.30 we all started in the carriage to the "Meeting of the Waters" to picnic there, and a very pleasant day we had. Of course there was hardly any water in the rivers, but I fished for trout up the Eden, and by 5.30 caught 32 trout, besides throwing back a number of Salmon fry. When I reached Tyn y groes I found the carriage had gone, so I walked home across the hill by Nannau, and got in, in time to dress for dinner. Trout (Eden) 32

Friday October 1st We reached or Dolserau at 12 o`clock; and felt none the worse for our journey after lunch. It was a rainy sort of day, and the river being in good order we gave it a try, the Minor going up to Llyn Coch; while I fished from below Dolgun: however, we did no good at all, the river being exceedingly high and clear. The Minor gave up to shoot rabbits, but I went up to Llyn Coch, and fished to the Ford without meeting a fish. The Minor shot Rabbits 2.

We beat round Williams` landup to the Cottages, where lunch met us, and then went on to Litterice [sic]. On the latter farm, we had a good many pheasants, also a covey of partridges. We began the day by beating all along the other side of the river, but found no pheasants there. We came in by 4 o`clock, and I went out to fish, and hooked one Sewin on small flies, but lost it. Tuesday October 5th It was a showery day, and owing to the heavy rain of last night the Mawddach was higher than yesterday. The coach horses was sold by auction in Dolgelley this afternoon, .... the Minor and I drove over to Tyn y groes, and began fishing at Gelli gemlyn Pool. Here the Minor caught a nice little fresh run grilse of 5lb. We then walked up to the Meeting of the Waters, and after lunch separated. I fishing the Eden while the Minor stuck to the Mawddach. I found the Eden rather high, but could not raise a fish. The Minor hooked a large salmon not far below the falls of the Mawddach, and played it down a quarter of a mile of river, and the fish eventually broke away by one of the bob flies being caught in a rock. The fish rose with a great rush to a "Durham Ranger". We got home about 7.30. Grilse 5 lb Sea trout 3 (Mawddach)

Wednesday October 6th A fine day with a strong fine NW breeze. We shot our coverts today, and had good sport, but were unlucky in losing seven pheasants, four of which were lost in a turnip field. Thursday October 7th Osmond, the Minor and I started out to shoot over Litterice [sic], Bryn bras &c., and beat for some rabbits in the drive. Osmon had to leave at 12 o`clock, and we were unfortunate not falling in with the pheasant when he was there, but we found a couple of cocks in Litterice which we shot, and also a lot of pheasants on a Litteri a stubble on our boundary, and we killed four of them. We returned to the turnip field this afternoon and killed four Cocks there, and then beat along the other side of the river, and found a nice brood of pheasants, but we were not lucky with them. Friday October 8th The Minor and I started with Kinsey and Davies to look for some pheasants pheasants on Tyddyn and the adjoining farms: unfortunately it turned out a very bad day for beating covert as rain fell most of the day. Saturday October 9th It was a wet morning, so the Minor and I started to the Mawddach about 9.30: and on getting to Llanelltyd bridge very nearly turned back as the river was rather low and clear, however we went on to Tyn y groes, and fished up from there to the Meeting of the Waters, the water, by this time getting into very good fly order. We did nothing before lunch, but the Minor got a small Grilse by the lower fin at the "Rock", and we then walked up to the Falls to fish down. It was not long before the Minor hooked a good fish, which gave us some grand sport. We could not keep him in the pool, but he ran down about 100 yards, and by handing the rod from one to another we managed to follow him: and after some difficulty I got him in the net. He proved to be a Grilse of 7 [and a half pounds], also hooked foul, at the vent. The Minor rose a third fish 3 times at one of the deep pools lower down; we gave up fishing about 5 o`clock, and were very wet owing to some heavy showers, and the wind being in the North it was very cold. Mother and Nelly started for Town today, and the Minor and I, being all alone, went off to the Mawddach which was of course in first rate order. We began at Gelli gemlyn, but did not waste much time below, but went right up the Mawddach to fish up to the Falls. I was very lucky, killing two Salmon, and the only two fish I rose. Thursday October 14th There was a white frost this morning, and the morning was very fine so the Minor and I made an early start to shoot over Cors y garnedd and the adjoining farm near Llanfacreth [sic]. John Davies was with us, with `Bang` and "Bess". Although several coveys of Partridges were about, they did not happen to be on our land, and we only found two old birds. We beat some very thick brushwood in the hopes of finding some hares and perhaps a woodcock but we only saw two hares. As the weather looks doubtful, we left after lunch, and then getting home beat the turnip field for pheasants, and went down Dolgun to see if the partridges were on the stubble, but only killed a rabbit. As it was very cold, and I had a toothache, I then went in. The Minor fished till dark, but did no good. (Cors y garnedd farm) Partridge 1 Hare 1 and a Rabbit.
