Monday December 13th A fine and mild day. The Minor and I with J. Davies and Humphry, made an early start to Talyllyn to shoot duck; we beat up the Torrent walk, without seeing a Woodcock, and reached Talyllyn about 11 o`clock, and saw that there were only a small flock of Pochards on the Lake. We had some difficulty in getting the boat on the Lake, and we might have done better without one; as our attempt to get within shot of the duck was a failure, and we went in to lunch at Tyn y gornel about one o`clock. Tuesday December 14th There was a hard frost during the night, and it was a beautiful day. We started out about 9 o`clock to Dolgarnedd expecting to have a good day, but we were terribly disappointed in the woodcock we saw: as we only found one at Dolgarnedd, and that below the railway which the Minor killed, and we both beat all round by Perthi Llwyddion [sic], Litterice [= Lletyrhys?], and Bryn bras - and only saw one Woodcock. Wednesday December 15th A fine and frosty day. We began by beating the long strip the other side of the railway, and killed a Cock Pheasant and a rabbit, and then we drove off to Drws y nant, to see if we could not find a woodcock or two. We beat all the dingles very carefully, and rough work it was too, and we killed 3 Woodcock, which were all we saw, and a hen pheasant. We also saw two hares, but did not shoot at them. We had tea at Drws y nant, and then drove home... Drws y nant Woodcock 3 Pheasant 1 Dolserau Pheasant Cock 1 Rabbit 1.

Thursday December 16th The frost broke up today; and we had some rain during the night. Smith, the Minor, and I started to shoot at Tyddin about 11 o`clock, driving down to the school, and walking up from there. We found three woodcock, two which the Minor was lucky enough to kill, but we did not find many pheasants (only two) and the probability is we left them in the thick covert. We walked home by Coed; but except killing a Jack Snipe in the bog did nothing more, except we ought to have accounted for a pheasant or two more in Coed wood, as we put several out of it the Minor alone killing a Cock . Saturday December 18th It poured with rain this morning, but it cleared up. The Minor met Coxe by the early train this morning and Coxewe breakfasted at nine o`clock. We started out to look for Woodcock, but had a most unsatisfactory day, for after beating up both sides of the Torrent, and the greater part of Littyrice [sic. Lletyrhys?], we only found one Woodcock, and that was opposite Caerynwch. We returned home through Coed wood where Coxe killed a cock pheasant, and we ended our day by beating along the river for rabbits. .... Cock Pheasant 1 Rabbits 3 (Coed wood and Home)

Monday December 20th It was a terribly wet day, with a gale of wind from SW. It showed signs of clearing up about 10 o`clock, so Coxe, Frank, the Minor, and I started out with our guns; and beat through Coed wood where we killed a Cock and hen pheasant; and then we went up to the Fron mines for Snipe, but only found a Jack. We then beat the snipe bog at Kirbys, and came in to lunch at the Cross Foxes, very wet; and then decided to go home..... It rained very hard to night. Pheasants to Snipe (Jack) 2 (Coed & Fron mines).

Tuesday December 21st Shot our coverts today, and with 6 guns, viz. Smith of Hengwrt, Sellar, PH Coxe, Frank Fletcher, the Minor and Self. Luckily we had it fine for the best part of the day, but a strong wind got up in the afternoon, which somewhat spoilt the shooting, and rain came on very heavily as we beat the last covert. Rabbits very plentiful, and we saw a fair amount of pheasants, but shooting was not so straight as it might have been. I think we saw 8 woodcock, four of which were killed, but two were supposed to have been lost.. Dolserau Home Coverts Guns 6 Cock Pheasant 10 Hen Pheasants 12 Rabbits 61 Woodcock 4 = 87 head

Wednesday December 22nd Coxe left us this morning, and after he had gone Frank, and I started out with our guns, and we beat the strip of covert the other side of the river, but did not see anything, and we then started off to Corsygarnedd, and a dreadful wind was blowing, which made shooting not very pleasant work, and just before lunch we had a tremendous thunder storm, but we took shelter in a cottage and had lunch. We came across a good covey of partridges which we drove into the scrub wood and killed two brace. We came home about 4.30.... Partridges 4, Rabbits 1 (Corsygarnedd).

Thursday December 23rd I went to Palé for two day`s shooting by the early train: The wind was much against shooting, being as bad as ever. Captain Taylor, Massey Taylor, Robertson, Harry, and I shot Ithe coverts above Palé, but our day was entirely spoilt by the strong wind. We saw three woodcock one of which I killed. Friday December 24th Robertson, Jack Dean, Tom sheriff, Harry R, and I went up by the 9.35 train to Llandrillo, to shoot some good woodcock coverts, but our day was completely spoilt by the rain and wind, which blew great guns and forced us to give up at lunch time, after which Tom Sheriff and Jack Deane, and I walked back to Pale. I returned home by the 5.23 train..... to Dolserau.I shot the two woodcock, and I think we saw 5. Monday December 27th Frank, the Minor and I went up to Drws y nant by the 8.40 train, rather for a snipe expedition, and we certainly had a good long walk. We killed 3 partridges on Drws y nant on our way up to the moor, and then had an unsuccessful search after snipe, and only found one on Cae Coch. We then came across a covey of four partridges, three of which we killed, and we ought to have had the fourth. We gave up shooting soon after 3 o`clock, and the Squire met us at Drws y nant Tun. Wednesday December 29th A fine day. We shot our coverts today being six guns, viz.... We beat them in the same way as the other day, but also went after part of Littyrys [Lletyrhys?]. We were disappointed in not seeing rabbits, but we saw a good many pheasants, particularly hens, which were spared the greater part of the day. Friday December 31st Windy, and wet looking day, but the rain kept off till evening. [3] and I drove over to Bryn Cemlyn to shoot with Col. Romer and we numbered Romer8 guns. R & W Griffiths, and Dr Lloyd Williams being also there. The covert, a splendid one for woodcock, was of course desperately thick; and it was great luck whether one got shots or not. We only had two birds by lunch time, but afterwards we saw more birds, higher up the wood., and Robert Griffith killed 5, the Minor 3, Colonel Romer 2, and I one, making 11 woodcocks, and I suppose we saw about 20. … the weather as bad as ever. I fished all the morning with the rod, and killed 7 nice trout, but the breeze was very bad, and the trout did not rise well. The two Greaves and Wynne netted, and caught some splendid trout, but none were over a lb. T.J. Wynne walked over the mountain from Penygwyd [Penygwryd] … As we were so thoroughly wet, we decided to walk over to Penygwyd [Penygwryd] … directly after lunch. We reached Penygwyd about 4: and as I was so very wet, I fished the stream there for an hour or so: and came into dinner at 6.30. We went to bed early being very tired. A fine day, though snow threatened all day.Lord Harris drove over to shoot with us, and Sir Henry Tufton joined us at the Forest Therefore we were seven guns. Ashley expected to kill 200 pheasants, but we fell short of the number, but picked up wonderfully in the afternoon The Forest 7 guns Pheasants 168 + 2 = 170,. Woodcock 4. Hares 5. The Squire and Mother went away by the 10.40 train ... I started out .. to look for a woodcock and we began at Dolgamedd and beat all the way home by Pethi and Littylys and Wern Goch, and only saw a snipe which I shot... went up this afternoon to the Lake in Nannau Deer Park, but the ice would hardly bear, and I also went up to the ponds at Nannau, but the ice was too weak. I came in at 4 o`clock ....

It was rather warmer today, but the wind still remained in the East ... went up to Tyddin, and soon found two woodcock, both of which I killed. We then worked towards Caeynwch and on our way I killed a snipe and a partridge, and also had the luck to kill two woodcock in Caeynwch wood, the only ones I saw. We came in about 4 o`clock and I read from 4.30 till 7.30. Woodcock .4. Partridge 1. Snipe.1. (Caeynwch and Tyddin) Saw 3 hares on Coed, but did not shoot at them.

The frost was very hard during the night, so this morning I started up to skate, but suddenly the wind shifted to the west, and rain came on, so of course I was done out of my skating, so I returned and went out with John Davies and we flushed a woodcock, just below Coed wood, but did not kill it: we had a long walk over Coed and Caerynwch without seeing anything. I came in to lunch and afterwards went out ferreting in Dolgun, and killed three rabbits. Read from 5 to 7.30. (Dolgun) Woodpigeon 1. Rabbits 3.

It froze hard during the night; so this morning I started up to the Lake in the Deer Park to skate, and found the ice in first rate order, though rather rough at one end. I had the ice all to myself in the morning, but after I had been down to Dolserau for lunch, I came up in the afternoon, and some people came from Dolgelley among them – Hughes. It was a very clear and frosty evening. I left the ice about 3.45, and read till dinner time.
