A most beautiful day, there not being a cloud in the sky…drove down to Hengwrt to shoot with the Keeper. I joined him about 10.30, and we first of all walked up to the marsh, but were very unlucky; and killed only one Jack Snipe. I tried several stalks at Duck but coud not get near them. In the afternoon we beat some fine woodcock coverts up from Borthwnog , but did not see a cock, and only found a covey of partridges which were very wild – We came down over the mountain to the marsh again and I walked along the river to Hengwrt, trying some unsuccessful stalks at ducks along the way, and then I walked home. It froze very hard this evening….Jack Snipe (Hengwrt marsh) 1.

I drove down to Hengwrt … and started out to beat the coverts on the left hand side of the Mawddach. We began badly as we flushed four Cock and did not kill them; but in the afternoon, despite the rain, we were luckier, and killed two, one of the birds having flown across the Mawddach settled in a fallow field and we walked up to the bird and killed it. Only saw one partridge which I killed. Walked most of the home being very wet. I read until dinner time. Woodcock 2. Partridge 1. Water hen 1. (Hengwrt)

John Davies and I started up to Cors y garnedd about 10.30: taking “Bess” with us. We could not find the partridges, but killed a hare and a woodcock. Although it was late in the afternoon we determined to walk to a Farm of Evan Lloyd’s. Cwm Bl??n Glyn. over the mountain, and a splendid covert there was there for woodcock, but we did not see one, but 3 hares – two of which we killed. The minor and I went down to Hengwrt, and started out with the keeper, and tried for Cock in the morning, but could not find any, so in the afternoon we went to the Marsh, and beat down one side, and crossed at Penmae?n Pool, and beat home the other. Did not find many Snipe, but powder was pretty straight, except at partridges, as we let off one covey. The Minor killed a right and left at a Mallard and Snipe. It blew a cold Easterly all day. I made up my mind not to start up Oxford till the 6.40 train so after breakfast at 8.30 the Minor and I started out and beat first of all near the Big Covert, but not seeing any Cock, we went off to Tyddin [sic]: where we found a bird; which after missing once the Minor killed. This was the only one we could find, and except for a partridge which I ought to have killed, we did not see another head of game before reaching home. After breakfast we started up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch] ; but owing to the cold wind and the snow on the ground we could not expect to catch fish; and after trying for some time. the Minor alone catching a small trout we went home to lunch. The Minor went to Llyn Crogennau, but soon came back again; the frost being hard up there. I read tonight from 8.30 to 11o’clock.

The Minor went to the Dee, and brought back some nice trout. ….. one o’clock, when I went out to fish the Wnion: the trout did not rise particularly well. I fished up to the Big Pool; and then went down to Dolgun and fished to the Weir…..

As it was milder this morning, I determined to have a day at Talyllyn with the Minor so we started directly after breakfast, and I walked nearly all the way there. Unfortunately the wind shifted round to the S.E and it was far from warm all day: and it rained most of the day. The Lake seemed in good order; but there is no doubt snow water in it. We picked up 10 trout – all small – at the end of the lake, mostly near the Bridge: and as they did seem inclined to rise: soon after two we started home, and I waked most of the way back. The Minor shot the Mallard, in the B??w Bay…..Trout (Talyllyn) 10. (Blue Dun Mackerel) Mallard duck 1.

I did not go to Church. but this morning walked to the top of Moel Off?i ?? : and round home by Llanfacreth.[Llanfachreth] After lunch I went up to the covert: with the Minor: and we saw a large cat on the path: and putting Loua [sic] on the track, she saw her up a tree near J Ellis cottage: and we soon “worried” her She was a large cat. The Minor and I went up to Llanderfel by the 8.40 train to fish the Dee : unfortunately the wind was cold although the river was in good order. We could do nothing at first: but about lunch time some gleams of sunshine came out: and we picked up some nice grayling: although the trout would not rise at all. I caught one very nice grayling of a lb: just before we gave up fishing: having fished down to Crogeu [Crogen?] and some of the best pools on our way back to Llanderfel station….I did no reading today. (Trout: M.E. and L.E. River Dee. Llanderfel & Crogeu [Crogen] Grayling – about 25 fish (1 grayling 1 lb).
