Wynne and I went up to Talyllyn this morning, walking over there. It was a hot and bright day: and we could not expect much sport. We did not have a single fish at lunch time when we went to the hotel, and Wynne determined to go over in a car to get our tent and provisions, for us to camp out. I fished hard until he returned at six, with the tent and Joe Chaplin. We pitched our tent at the head of the Lake, and had a little difficulty with the farmer for camping in his hay field, but we soon squared him. Wynne and I bathed just before dinner at 8 o’clock. I did not do much fishing afterwards as I had to give the boat up: but the fish were rising like anything. Trout (Talyllyn) 8.

We were up early ... at seven went round to Tyn – y- Cornel to get the boat. The wind was Easterly, and it came over very cloudy, and a little rain fell: the trout rose badly all day, and the strong wind spoiled our sport, the latter part of the day - ‘Jones Infallible’ killed most of the fish. We gave up fishing about 7.30, and took the boat back to Tyn–y-cornel. We had supper at 8 o’clock, and had to peg the tent down firmly as it blew very hard tonight, but was beautifully fine. Turned in at 9.15: and we all slept like tops until 5 o’clock in the morning. Trout (Talyllyn) 18.

It was a very hot day. … bathed before breakfast at 9.30 and afterwards all went in the coach to Barmouth: which we reached about 2 o’clock. We had a capital bath in the sea, out of a boat, and then lunched, and drove back. When we got home Kingcombe and I went up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch] to Perch fish: we did not begin fishing to past seven, and we had good sport, and did not get home till past ten: and we had supper. A fine day: and not too hot. We bathed this morning before breakfast: and at 10.30 went down to Dolgelley [sic] : Dolserau playing against the Dolgelley Club at cricket. I went into the Court: Quarter Sessions being held, but I did not stay long. We commenced the match at 11.30: Dolgelley [sic] going in and scored 89: I bowled three wickets; our innings closed for 15: and we followed on, and were beaten easily… [further details of return match] ... When we got home; we played two games at Lawn tennis...

I got up soon after six; caught the 7.10 train to Arthog, walking into Dolgelley [sic]. It looked a good day for fishing: and I breakfasted at the Arthog Hall Hotel, and reached Crogennau at nine o’clock. I fished hard all day: and killed a good basket of trout, but the fish were not rising to the ‘natural’. I gave up fishing at 5: and walked down to Arthog to catch the 6.45 train but it was horribly late, and I only got home in time to dress for dinner. Llyn Crogennau – Trout 38.

A misty day with drizzling rain. Wynne and Lister went off fishing on Cader. I went out before breakfast with Kingcombe and shot two couple of rabbits: and after breakfast at 9.30 I went to fish up at Cynwych [Cynwch] but could do no good; and then I went down to the Wnion. but found the river so low that I gave up fishing when I got to Bontnewydd, and took the 2.25 train up to Drws-y-nant, and had a walk over the moor. I only went on the east side, and saw one good covey, but the mist was very thick on the hill. I walked down to Drws-y-nant Inn; had some tea, and then walked home. Wynne and Lister caught 48 trout on Llyn Arra? and stream.

We had breakfast at 8 o’clock and stated over to Talyllyn and I walked all the way. We did not begin fishing till 11 o’clock, and as there was a very strong S.W. wind blowing with dense mist, we only took one boat. Wynne and I fished most of the time and picked up a nice basket of trout, and they were rising well in the morning…. I started off to Maesyganddw Farm meeting Kinsey with the dogs on Penantygi: and we walked over to Maesyglaslyn and so down to the Farm for lunch. My principal object in going was to see certain tenants of Maesyglas?y and Jones of Tyncelyn: in order to get the shooting over their Farms; they readily gave me the shooting. We made an early start by the 7 o’clock train on the Festiniog railway. To Plas Weniydd [?]. Ernest Greaves house … we started up to Llyn Dwe?inydd. a Lake belonging to the Greaves and preserved by them. The wind was bad for fishing; and the weather looked unsettled, and about six o’clock heavy rain set in: worse weather than that which as [was?] usual could not have been imagined, and quite spoilt the nights fishing. We had one draw with the net just before dusk and killed 11: and several good trout fell to our rods.

… the weather as bad as ever. I fished all the morning with the rod, and killed 7 nice trout, but the breeze was very bad, and the trout did not rise well. The two Greaves and Wynne netted, and caught some splendid trout, but none were over a lb. T. J. Wynne walked over the mountain from Penygwyd [Penygwryd] … As we were so thoroughly wet, we decided to walk over to Penygwyd [Penygwryd] … directly after lunch. We reached Penygwyd about 4: and as I was so very wet, I fished the stream there for an hour or so: and came into dinner at 6.30. We went to bed early being very tired. There were showers this morning, but it cleared up and turned out very fine. …..walked up to Cwm Ffynnon Lake, not far from the Inn: directly after breakfast and we fished it and the stream running out for an hour: but we only killed some very small trout. At 12 o’clock we took the Coach to Beddgelert; which we reached by one o’clock; and after a two mile drive to the bottom of the Pass: we got off the coach to fish the Glaslyn down, but it was too bright to expect sport so we gave up and walked back to Tynanney [sic], and dined at 7 o’clock: after having had a very pleasant trip, although we were unlucky as regards weather. … returned to Dolserau reaching there soon after nine … went into the Town for Assizes … there was only one case, so all business was over in half an hour … met Griffiths in Dolgelly [Dolgellau]... went back to get into my fishing clothes; and we started to Llanelltyd bridge. River was low but of good colour, and we fished up right to the Meeting of the waters. both lunching and dining out. I caught a good sewin of 1 ½ lb at the head of Gethegeu?lyn and Griffith got one of 2 lb and a half in one of Col. Rowses’ pools. We drove home in a car, and I reached Dolserau about 11 o’clock. Wynne and I started over to Talyllyn soon after 9 o’clock, and I walked most of the way over there: and we expected a good day. it remained cloudy in the morning with a light breeze and we picked up some good fish, but in the afternoon the sun became too bright: and we could not catch any, but we killed some in the evening: at all events our basket was 25 trout; the largest being about ¾ lb. It was a glorious day. Davies … came down at 7.30 and we started to camp out at Glow lyn [Gloyw Lyn] ... [detailed account of setting up camp beyond the Roman Steps in the Rhinogau] ... and we had the tent comfortably pitched at 3 o’clock and after some lunch, we began fishing and I soon landed a good trout of ¾lb and Wynne landed two, one of 1 ¾lb: a very fine fish. The weather was intensely hot today. I was up at 5 o’clock fishing before the sun came on the water; and I caught one good trout, notwithstanding a dead calm. There was hardly any breeze all day. I went up to the little lake Llyn ddu [Llyn Du]: and killed six nice trout there, but the heat was fearful. In the afternoon little fishing could be done, but towards evening I threw over some rising fish: and at 8 o’clock had the luck to stick in a good fish of nearly 2 lb: wght on the Coachman fly: he gave me great sport. In the afternoon the camp was struck, and Wynne went with Davies and Joe down to Cwm Bachau: and pitched the tent there. I stayed up at Glowlyn [Gloyw Lyn]: in order to get some evening fishing. But the breeze died away altogether, but I was lucky in killing a good trout of 1lb,: and at 7: or soon after I started down to Cwnbachau: we had a splendid bath in the Lake and then supper: but we were terribly bitten by midges: and I tried to fish late, but could hardly hold my rods. We were terribly worried by midges during the night. We sent to the Farm House close by for the loan of a horse to carry our baggage to Pensarn station, and …. There was a train about 12 o’clock. Wynne and I walked on and did the 6 miles to the Victoria Inn, Llanbedr – in an hour and a half [details of journey to Dolserau] … The heat was very oppressive. … walked down to the crooked pool with Nelly and we saw a big fish in the pool. There was a dinner party here tonight…
