We started up the hill at 6.15 having to reach Ty`n-y-braich before the head keeper, Davies: whom we thought we should meet up there. We had a stiffish walk up the hill: and found Davies on Tyn-y-braich: and I promptly warned him off: and much to his credit he went immediately, but he had killed, I believe, about seven brace. We found two very good coveys on Maesyglassau and Maesygamdda: but of course Tyn-y-braich was not much good. The heat was intense, and we made a halt about 11.30 and had some lunch, and then went down some way to meet the Ladies coming up; which we did about 2 o`clock, but minus the lunch which owing to some mistake about a pony - we did not get till 3.30. We had a good rest till 5 o`clock; then as the others did not feel inclined to start up the hill again: I went off ... and we certainly had the best part of the day for shooting: but I was tired, and although I killed a brace - we ought to have killed two or three. I left off at 7.30: and got back to the Bulkeley Ams at 8.30 and after a comfortable dinner went to bed.

We spent a lazy day. I walked over to Mallwyd; to see if I could not get a trap of some sort, but could not: but Kinsey racked [?] up a butchers cart in Dinas. We had two very nice bathes one in the morning. and one in the afternoon. We dined at 6.30: and at 7.30 we started over to sleep at Llwyngwilliam Farm house: about 3 miles from Dinas where we were received very hospitably.

We had a few hours sleep: that is to say - Wynne and I did - and at 2 o`clock we got up - had some breakfast - and then went up on the hill at 2.30. Thomas - the tenant was our guide, and we had a steep walk up but the scenery was beautiful - a bright moon shining all along the valley and rising like a veil[?] We were up on our ground at 4 o`clock: and then the sun began to rise: and I killed a hare immediately - right and left: but the mist came on: and stopped us shooting till 7.30. In the meantime our men came up, accompanied by one of Sir Edmund`s [Edward`s ?] watchers: and we warned each other off the ground - but he accompanied us all day. We found plenty of birds - the coveys being strong - but owing to our early rising powder was crooked - and we made a much smaller bag than we ought to have made. We left the hill about 11.30 [details of return to Dinas and Dolserau] we did not get home till 10 o`clock ... Guns 4 Grouse 7

...did not start out shooting till nearly 12 o`clock ... drove to Coedmaeswglog, where we began shooting, and then worked our way over to Caerywnch moor. We found one good covey of birds on Coedmaeswglog but were unlucky with them. We killed a brace on a small piece of heather near Caerywnch moor an on the latter place did not see a single bird, although we beat it well. Guns 4 (Coed Maeswglog Grouse 3 Caerywnch Snipe 2)

We had a good bathe this morning ... I tried to catch a few trout this morning, but found the river so very low that I gave up. After lunch ... went up to Caerynwch moor, hoping to find the birds, but we did not see a single one, although Kinsey has seen a covey of birds there. We walked home and shot two couple of rabbits. I went to Big Pool and had a bathe: and soon after I got in rain came on, and lasted for a couple of hours. It then cleared up, and turned out a fine day. I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch] ... and we fished for Perch all day, and part of the time I tried a fly without success. The Perch did not bite well: and it was only by dint of sticking at it, that we caught what we did. The weather was close and still, but a S.East wind blew in the evening. We left the Lake at 7.45: and I went down to Garthmaelau and dined there; and found my home to Dolserau in the dark with a lantern ... Perch (Llyn Cynwch 22).

...went up to Drws-y-nant by the 8.40 train to shoot Cae Coch. The wind was blowing rather unfavourable from the East, and we had to beat the ground differently to what we generally do. We only found one covey a large one - on Cae Coch, and as powder was crooked we only killed 3 birds - In the afternoon we beat a small piece of Drws-y-nant - we did not see many birds, but I killed a brace of old Cocks. It rained a little during the day. Scent was bad, and we only had one point, and that was on Drws-y-nant. We returned by the six o`clock train. Guns 4: Cae Coch Grouse 3, Drws-y-nant Grouse 2 = 5.

A fine day. We bathed this morning in the Big Pool. I walked into church with Nelly, and also walked back again with Grace and Nelly. This afternoon I went down to the Llwyn fields to catch animals for the Aquarium.

We went up to Drws-y-nant by the 8.40 train to shoot ... and three went on each side ... We found a good many birds, but as a rule the coveys were small. The scent was wonderfully good and birds lay like stones. The shooting might have been better, and we ought certainly to have killed 10 brace. After lunch, which Mother and Grace brought up to us, we beat over the same ground we did in the morning ... returned by the 6 o`clock train ... Drws-y-nant. Werngoch [`our side`] Guns 3. Grouse 16. ... travelled..up to Drws-y-nant by the 18.40 train, and we shot Cae Coch. It was a splendid day for walking, there being a nice cool breeze. We found a few odd birds, and killed three - but we had the bad luck to come on a splendid covey of birds - which flew off on to Sir Watkins - and we did not get a bird out of it. We sent Bob after lunch to try and drive the covey over, but he could not find it. We went on a piece of Drws-y-nant afterwards, but only saw a small covey of four. We drove back in the phaeton. The evening was fine, but very cold. Cae Coch. Guns 2. Grouse 3.

... bathed this morning in the river. It was a cold day. ... after lunch.. went up to Sarnau Bog. snipe shooting. We saw lots of birds, but they were wild. Powder was straight, and we were very fortunate in finding the birds killed. Only saw one Wild duck. A carriage brought me home from the Bog to the stationand i retyrned home by the 5.34 train. My 23rd Birthday. It was showery this morning so, so Wynne, H. Saul and I started to the Mawddach. Wynne fished near Tyn-y-groes, while Kirkhinton[?] and I went to the falls. I rose three salmon, hooking two of them. but was very unlucky. Wynne alone got any sport, catching two sewin. The midges tormented us dreadfully in the evening. Sea Trout(Mawddach) 2 (1) 3 1/4lbs.

I went out fishing this morning about 8 o`clock, and caught a sewin with fly...[Cricket cancelled] but rain came on very heavily, so ... went up the Wnion. We fished up to Bontmewydd, and then took the train up to Drws-y-nant, and the river came down in heavy flood. Unfortunately I broke my rod, and I had to walk all the way back to Dolserau to get another, and I fished the pool near home with fly, but had no sport, the weather looking very unsettled.
The sport was as follows (Wnion) Sea trout 4. Trout 40. Kinsey shot Grouse 3. Snipe 11 Caerynwch.

Wynne and I were going to Pale to shoot, but so wet was the weather we decided not to go till this evening. .. Wynne and I went out fishing with worm, the river rising very fast. The fish would not bite well, no doubt owing to the continuous rain which lasted all day. We started to Pale by the 4 o`clock train and arrived there soon after 5 o`clock. Sea trout 3 (1) 1 1/4lbs

It was a fine morning, and turned out a capital day for shooting [details of the 2 parties, 6 guns] ...We went to Llandrillo by the 9.30 train .. and had a good days sport. Our bag would have been larger, if the scent had been better, and the powder more straight. Coveys were large, and we only saw one pair of old birds all day. The other party was not so successful. but they saw lots of grouse.

Heavy showers of rain fell this morning, and rather spoilt the shooting. We went up to Llandrillo by the 9.30 train [details of 2 shooting parties] Birds were rather wild this morning, and we were rather bothered by standing corn. at lunch time we had 7 ½ brace, while the others had 2 ½ brace, 2 Wild duck and a hare. After lunch …. [we] shot towards the station as we had to go away by the 5.15 train. We killed 4 ½ brace and two rabbits … went home the train dropping us by the bridge. As the river was in splendid order Wynne and I went out fishing but we did not catch anything. We dined at 8 o’clock. Partridges 29. Wilduck [sic] 2. Hare 1. Rabbits 2.

It was very rainy this morning, but it fortunately cleared up, and I went by the 8.40 train to Drws-y-nant and shot .. on Smith’s moors. Wynne came up with us to fish. We found a good many birds on Sir Watkins’ Boundary but the birds were rather wild: we shot some birds in the morning, nd did nothing after lunch although we walked a good deal. Out of the seven birds killed I bagged six.
Wynne … caught 89 trout on a small mountain stream, near where we were shooting.

A wild and stormy day with frequent showers … we started to Drws-y-nant to shoot on our side. We hardly could expect the birds to lie well on such a windy and showery day; but by dint of hard walking we had fair sport: but some of the birds were rather small. We shot over Werngoch and Lettygwyn before lunch, and afterwards on Escegawr. We saw one large covey of birds. Wynne fished the river, but had no sport. Although he met some sewin.
