Kingcombe and I went to shoot over Blaenau today: and had a capital morning’s sport, finding three very good coveys – and we were tolerably lucky with them. We lunched at Cefn Braich, and … had a long walk without seeing anything, but fell in with one of the coveys we found in the morning, and we made our bag up to 8 brace – a very good day for Blaenau. … breakfasted at 8.30, and we went out ferreting till 12 o’clock, but it was not pleasant work owing to the heavy showers of rain. Wynne and I started off by the 1.40 train to Oswestry to stay with the Bridgeman for two days shooting at Knockin Hall. We drove from Oswestry and got there about six o’clock.

Added post entry – Wynne went to fish the Mawddach today and lost a large fish on the Eden he caught . Sea Trout. 2.

Breakfast at 8. And we started out shooting soon after 10 o’clock. We were 5 guns … We began by trying two places for wild duck but only killed 5: two of which I killed right and left. We made a good bag of partridges during the afternoon, walking the birds up. Birds were very plentiful, but decidedly wild: although there was no scarsity [sic] of covert. We shot till 6 o’clock.

A showery morning. Bridgeman, Wynne and I started out shooting at 10.30, and shot near Knockin. We did not see as many birds as yesterday, and powder was not particularly straight. We walked the birds up, but covert was rather scarse. We shot our way home in the evening, and the Miss Bridgemans’ joined us in the afternoon.

I reached Dolserau about 12 o’clock: and after some lunch the Minor, who arrived home last Sunday, Wynne and I went out for a walk after pheasants. … We walked to Dolgaw?dd and beat our way home; saw a good many pheasant on the stubbles. but ‘covert was awfully thick. I had the bad luck to shoot ‘Gyp’ by accident, the best of our spaniels. Our bag was. Pheasants.6.. Woodpigeon 1. Hare .1. Rabbits 14. Various. 2. = 28

The |Minor, Wynne and I drove over to the Mawddach. Wynne began fishing at Llanelltydd while the Minor and I went up to the Falls. The day was an unlucky one as the Minor rose 3 fish and I 2; and the Minor hooked a large fish, but the back of his hook broke. Wynne also rose two fish. We met at Tyn –y - groes, and drove home.

A fine day. We started about 8.45 to shoot over Blaenau but found no birds there at all, except one small covey. The people brought up our lunch to Braich beddw, and in the afternoon we walked over to Coedmaeswglog, but a sale was going on there, which had disturbed the ground, so we walked home across the mountain, and did not get home before rain came on.

…walked over the mountain to the Mawddach on the chance of it being in order, and to our surprise found the river full. I began fishing Gethigemlyn, but at 12 o’clock we walked up to the falls, and owing to frequent showers the river rose rapidly: and could not have been in better order; but somehow or other the fish would not rise at all, and we went home blank. We had a very dark walk home. The Minor flushed a woodcock today, which is the earliest instance I have heard of in this country. The Sale of the Coach horses took place in Dolgelley [sic] today.

It poured with rain all day, consequently none of us went to Church. We managed to get out in the afternoon and as the river was in high flood we took a rod down and the Minor caught two small sewin.

We again started for the Mawddach, which was in good order for fly: but a heavy shower brought down a fresh flood – and quite spoilt fly fishing. The Minor and I went up the river, and first of all fished the Eden – without rising a fish, and we then crossed over the mountain to the Mawddach. For the rest of the day we fished with worm, and each lost a fish. My fish, one about 10 lbs. I hooked in the pool below the Falls and I played it for about 20 minutes, when the fish took me out of the pool and broke me. Wynne had no luck.

I saw a lot of pheasants, but only killed a brace, as I had no means of carrying them. I saw two snipe at the Iron Mines, but bagged neither of them. After some lunch at the Cross Foxes I went after snipe on the other side of the Clywedog, but I saw only two. I returned home by the Clump, where I saw a fine covey of partridges, but I only killed one of them. Some tremendous showers fell during the day. The Minor and Wynne returned home blank, although they had met fish.

At last we had a really fine day. … began shooting the opposite side of the river, where we killed 13 rabbits & 2 pheasants. Lloyd and I then started out with John Davies, and we had a very long walk below Caerynwch hill to Coedmaeswglog; lunching at the cottages on our way. We found one covey of partridges, but they got into a wood, consequently we were not lucky with them. We all dined at Caerynwch tonight.

A fine and bright day. We had a really pleasant days sport at Coed Caerynwch and Bryn Bras with Beaters and Retrievers. Found one large flock[?] of pheasants, and also a good covey of partridges. Powder fairly straight. We beat home by the Torrent Walk.

The day looked very bad as regards weather this morning, but fortunately the day turned out fine so Kingcombe and I…went to shoot near Glyn, while the Minor and Wynne went to the Mawddach. We had a very rough days shooting, coverts being thick and hard to beat. We saw about 40 pheasants but they appeared to be mostly old birds, and grand game was very scares [sic]. Lloyd caught a Salmon 7 1/2lbs with Fly in one of the Pools below the Falls. We met in Dolgelley, and returned home together.

We were going up to Drws – y – nant this morning, but weather looked so bad that we did not go. Hughes came to shoot with us this morning, so we began by beating the wood across the river where we killed four pheasants and seven rabbits and we then went off to Corsygarnedd. It poured all the morning, and we nearly gave up shooting at lunchtime. We found two good coveys of partridges and killed 3 1/2 brace. Kinsey killed two wounded pheasants today…

It was a very wet night. ...Wynne and I started over to the Mawddach on foot, and walked over to the Falls. The river was too high when we began fishing but it soon ran down into good order: and owing to the rain which fell nearly all day - it kept a very nice height. It was a grand rising day, as we rose 8 salmon: ; and the Minor ... killed a fish in the 1st long pool, and Wynne a grilse of 5 1/2lbs . in one of the pools below the Falls. I had my usual bad luck, losing 2 fish. One, a large salmon I hooked about 4 o`clock, and he gave mean hour and fifteen minutes good sport, taking me over some bad places. The fish was well hooked, but eventually got into a deep pool, where he sulked and eventually my gut gave at the loop. Heavy rain tonight. Dor[?] arrived today from Scotland. Osmond Williams also came to stay here.

We shot the best part of the Home coverts under most trying circumstances: but saw a good deal of game. The coverts were in a dreadfully wet state; which was much against the Beaters.
