Punctually at 8 o’clock started to fish the upper Mawddach, and walked over there in an hour and thirty-five minutes, going across the mountains by coes y garnedd and [Cyyrw-Blaen Glyn] I began fishing at 10 o’clock, fishing up for some way, but at first I did not catch much, but had better sport between 11 o’clock and one. Unfortunately after fishing down almost to the first wood: I met two men who had fished all the way up, so I altered my plan, and went right up above were I had fished: and caught a good way, and when I left off at 5 o’clock they were rising well: but of course the trout are smaller so high up, than what they probably would be lower down… It was a right warm night and warm day, and the river was in capital order. A wet day, wind S/W with misty rain… I went down to the Far and it looked like cleaning up: and I started over to stay the night at Talyllyn. John Davies bringing the trap over later. I had a very wet walk, the rain coming down in torrents, the last two miles: and consequently I reached Talyllyn very wet.

I was out fishing at 7:30, but the day though warm, did not look promising, as it was raining and the wind, my worst enemy was [reclined?] to get squally. I caught two trout before breakfast from the shore; and as the wind increased I did most of my fishing [woding?] from the shore, in fact I did not catch one from the boat. The fish rose badly all day: and hardly any were rising to the ‘Natural’. I gave up fishing about 5 o’clock, and walked home straight from the Lake. Trout (Talyllyn) 9 Salmon [?] 1.

The wind as usual was very bad for fishing, and heavy rain coming on I was forced to leave the lake at one o’clock, and I went down to the Afon Wen: but could do little good there. Returning to Llyn Cynnwch, I found the breeze better, and caught one trout off the shore, and hooked a good one from the boat, off the bushes a [dense?] mist terminated my fishing… Trout (Llyn Cynnwch) 1 Afon Wen 7

A good looking fishing day, warm with ‘April Showers’… I commenced fishing at the Tad pool, and fishing up almost as far as Bont Rhiadyr had good sport; Infact the trout rose wonderfully well below Bont Newydd: and I caught some good ones. I fished till 6 o’clock. Trout (Wnion) 107

Walked up to Llyn Llynwy. I began fishing at 10 o’clock and expected good sport, but the breeze was too light, and the water was very cold. I began well: but unfortunately lost three good fish which made all the difference to my bag. I caught 4 in the Lake, and about 3:30 as the breeze died away to nothing I went down to the river, but the trout would not rise at all… Trout (Llyn Llynwy) 4 Twrch 3.

When we both went up, to Llyn Cynnwych there was little breeze blowing, and at times it was almost dead calm. I killed one trout, which would have been a good fish had it been in good condition. We left the lake in the afternoon and tried the river: but I only caught a few small trout… Trout (Lllyn Cyrwych) I Trout (Wnion) 13.

The wind was easterly; and I went alone up to Llyn Cynwrch, expecting no sport. However I caught two very nice trout, not large but in beautiful condition. Wintle and I went for a ramble on the mountains: and I took my gun with me, in the hopes of seeing a buzzard or raven. A violent S.E gale was roaring, and it was with difficulty that we got over Caerynwch Hill.

First of all began fishing the river which was in flood; giving this up, I started for a small walk over Caerynwch Hill, and on to the lower Penantigi; to look at the moon: but a dense mist came on, and I could not see much, but I put up two pair of grouse. Bic and Lorna got into sad trouble, as there is not doubt they killed a sheep.
