I had a bathe in the big pool, and at 10 o’clock Charles Owen took me down in his dogcart to Dolgelly… intending to play in a match against Barmouth, but the eleven was filled up so Bunbury and I went down to Barmouth, and rowed up to Penmaen Pool but a heavy shower of rain came on and made it by no means pleasant work.

We were going to have a picnic at Talyllyn, but the weather was simply abominable, and we soon came home again and it is fortunate we did as heavy rain came on. We drove to Tyn-y-groes, and I went to the Eden, and it was not long before that river came down in flood, but the Mawddach was not down till much later, and then it was one of the dirtiest floods I had seen for a long time. I tried the Eden with worm without avail, and finished up at Gethigemlyn: but the Sewin would not bite at all. I walked home by llanelltydd and Garthmaelaw.

The river was in excellent order, but the fish took badly, and I lost several sewin. I fished right up to the Falls, but rose nothing till I came to the pool where I caught the grisle the other day: here I rose a fine Salmon to the Black and Yellow: and eventually hooked him on a double hooked Durham Ranger he gave me half an hours exciting sport, and John Davies landed him beautifully. Salmon 1 12lbs Durham Ranger Mawddach Sea Trout 2.

I started from Dolserau at 4:30, and walked into Dolgelly where I met Banbury and we took a car to Tyn-y-groes. The river was in fine order, but I fished all the upper water banks, and as a good deal of rain was hanging about I was not surprised. I left off fishing at 4 and walked home… I went up to dine at Caerynwch and we had a very wet drive home.

Went on to Tyn y Groes owing to continual rain, the river was very high, but a splendid colour for fly. We tried up the Eden first but found it too high, and so we went off to the falls. At the first long pool Wynne caught six lb Sewin and at 1:30 I hooked a Salmon of quite 15lbs in the mine Pool, having risen him first to a Durham Ranger. I was all alone for the first half hour, and then Wynne joined me: and we had great hopes of killing the fish: but after an hours exciting play he got off in a very rough place. We tried the Eden again, and I caught another 2lb’er at the bridge pool. We then returned to Tyn-y-Groes had some tea, and tried some of the lower pools, but Wynne also rose a fish. WE and CME Sea Trout (Eden) 2 (1) 2 ¼ lbs (1) 2 lbs Sea Trout (Mawddach) (1) 6 lbs.

I started over to Dinas Mawddwy meeting Kinsey on [Penantigi?] hill, and we had a point on Caeafon in order to fire a shot over the young days, and then descended to Maesygamdda [Fawr/Fawn?]… I gave a dinner to the Proprietors and tenants over whose land I shoot: about twenty sat down, and a very pleasant evening was spent.

Started to walk to Caeafon. The morning was dull and misty, and by the time we reached our ground (about 5:45) the mist was very thick, and quite prevented us beating our ground properly… The mist cleared away by 10 o’clock, and it turned into a delightful day for [tramping/trapping?] on the hills. We beat our ground well… and in the afternoon went on to the lower Penantigi, but found no birds there. We came across two or three coveys of “cheepers” and at least 1 ½ [?] of the birds we killed were small… They had had a fair days sport on Llwyngwynllwyn and found birds plentiful and strong CME Caeafon, Maesygamdda, Maesyglassy, Tyn-y-Braich Grouse 7. WE Llwyngwynllwyn Grouse 11= 18

Got a thorough ducking (sic: Soaking) However it cleared a bit about breakfast time, and we started to Rhewlas by the 10:40 train to play the annual watch the Rhiwlas zigzags. But it turned out a wretched day for cricket, as continued rain kept up in the tents… Heavy rain and thunderstorms stopped further play.

I went out fishing the Wnion… but although I rose one or two Sewin, I caught nothing. Wynne and I went over to the Mawddach, which we found in good order, but we had no luck. We fished up to the falls and Wynne rose a Salmon twice, but did not hook him: it was in the first long pool in the wood. I walked home across the hill.

We went up by the 8:40 train to shoot over Drws y Nant. Bob and Grace both came up on Ponies: and we shot in two parties…I shot on Lilly gwyn and Werngoch as I expected coveys were very small, but a good pack was seen by each party. I only found one covey of unshootable birds. The day was fine; and for a wonder we had little rain. Powder not so straight as it might have been. Guns 3. A very wet morning, and it seemed almost impossible for us to shoot… Wynne and I went out fishing… and I went to the ford: the river being in good order for worm. I caught one Sewin and some river trout… It cleared up in the afternoon and we had a pleasant three hours shooting, the birds lying well. Still more rain, which brought the rivers down in high flood. We did not go to the Mawddach, as there was too much rain… I began at the Ford and fished right up to the Bont Rhidge: I caught three Sewin with worm, and took to a fly in the afternoon, and caught a splendid Sewin at the tail end of Llyn Goch with the Durham Ranger. Sea Trout (Wnion) 4 (1) 3 ¼ lbs. W.E caught Sea Trout 1 Trout 25.

Wynne and I started over to Tyn y Groes in a perfect downpour of rain, and we found the river very high. We went to the Eden, and in the first pool I fished. I rose a Salmon three times. Wynne at the same time lost a fine fish and rose another, and at the tail end of the [?] pool I rose a fish twice, but he did not touch my fly. This was a bad beginning: and we then went up the falls, but the river was much too high for fly and we tried a worm: and then returned to the Eden in the evening, but even then it was too high. Wynne rose a Salmon twice. This was an unlucky days fishing, as we might have had good sport. Sea Trout *Mawddach) 1

I went out fishing on the Wnion… and caught a Sewin in the pool in the Hollow, loosing another there… I drove up to Drws Y Nant with Smith, and we had a very pleasant days sport. [Scent?] was not good, nor were birds plentiful but Dover and bess worked splendidly, and powder was straight… Sea Trout (Wnion) 1 Guns 2 Hengwrt Drws y Nant, C.M.E & W.M Smith killed Grouse 14.

Monday August 23rd A fine day. We went up by the 8.40 train to shoot Drws y nant, and Nicholson and Hughes met us in the train. The Minor and Hughes went together and shot over the Cae Coch side of the moor, while Nicholson and I went over Esgegawr [sic Esgairgawr] and [Letterygwyn]. The birds lay well, but we did not see many, and at lunchtime we had 4 brace, while the others had 3 brace. Mother and Mrs Millais brought us up a most sumptuous lunch, and afterwards we started off the same as in the morning, but the Minor greatly grumbled at only having Don, while we had Bang and Bess. Nicholson and I did not find a single covey after lunch, but several scattered birds, and we killed 3 brace, and the others 2 brace. = Thus making 12 brace [?], but the bag might of been much more. We caught the six o`clock train, and walked home from Dolgelley. Grouse (Drws y nant) 24 guns [=2]

Heavy rain fell all day and there was a grand chance of catching fish… I went to the Mawddach… I [?] in a grand fish in the ‘minors pool’. He rose twice to Durham Ranger, at the tail of the pool: without stopping a moment he went straight down stream, and had I and John Davies not crossed the stream, we should have never caught him. He weighed 11 lbs… I walked home in a tremendous downpour. C.M.E Mawddach. Salmon 1 11lbs Durham Ranger. C.M.E went out on the wnion in the morning and killed Sea Trout 1.

Very heavy showers falling. We found the river in yellow flood… I commenced at Gettigemlyn (sic: Gelligemlyn) with worm, but owing to the high wind, could do nothing. I caught three nice sewing in some holes just above, one being more than 3lbs. I then walked up to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and fished steadily up with worm, and had great sport. I tried some of the upper pools with fly in the evening, but the river was too high and discoloured. The others were blank, but Wynne rose a grisle in the Eden three times. Sea Trout (Mawddach) 8 wght 16lbs 12 oz Largest 3lb 6oz.
