Saturday May 4th A beautiful day, a fresh westerly breeze blowing. Rhys Price drove me down to Dolgellau in the cart, to catch the 8.50 to Arthog, as I wish to go up to Crogennan, but we just missed the train, so I walked, and reached the lakes soon after 10. At first I could not see the Keeper, to get the boat, so i fished off shore, and soon caught 3 nice trout. I got the boat at 11 o`clock and from then to 1 o`clock I had capital sport, there being a good rise on the trout, on the trout. In the afternoon they did not rise so freely, but my sport was nevertheless good, and three times during the day caught two at once, and had two fish on twice also, but one got off. I left the Lake at 6; and carried my fish down to Arthog, and had to wait till 7.45 for the train, consequently I was very late home. Trout (Llyn Crogennan [sic]) 53 best day, the average size being very good. Flies. Soldier Palmer. Red Spinner. Partridge & green. Red Ant. all killed well.

Sunday May 5th A glorious day. I went to the Big Pool this morning before breakfast and had a very nice bathe, although the water was rather cold. About 11 o`clock I walked up to Nannau with a basket of trout, and left cards. After lunch, I have not seen Lorna since I left Talyllyn, I rode Rhys` new pony over there, to look for the dog. Miss Lorna had been up to mischief, and no doubt saw me on the road, at all events when I reached home at 6.30 she was there. I had, however, a pleasant ride, but w stiff after it.

Monday May 6th I started at 8 to Llyn Abbi [Ybi?], Perfeddau and Cemlyn. It looked fine enough when I started, but it turned out an unfortunate day for a long expedition to mountain lakes. I reached the Cemlyn at 9.30 and as there was a nice breeze on the flat pools, I began fishing them, but I could do no good, so off I went to Llyn Abbi, which as soon as I reached, it began raining and blew great guns. I only saw 2 fish rise, one of which I nailed without difficulty, a fine trout of 1lb 2oz. I fished the lake till 3 o`clock, only catching two others. I then crossed over to Llyn Perfeddau, but the weather looked very bad, and I was afraid of the mist coming over "Bwlch": so I did not stay long, but returned to Llyn Abbi, and then went down to meet John Davies, which I soon did, as he was fishing up the Cemlyn to me. We left off fishing about six, and reached Tyn y Groes, pretty well drenched where I stayed the night. Trout (Llyn Abbi) 3 Cemlyn 58 (1) 1lb 2oz.

Wednesday May 8th A very wet day, the rain commencing from the W, and ending up from the E. I had intended to spend my last day at Crogennan [sic], but it was out of the question on such a day, so I walked up to Rhydymain, intending to fish the stream up with worm, but such a Rhydymainflood came on I stuck to the Wnion, and fished right up to Drws y nant, but I never saw such a dirty flood in all my life, consequently it was little good for fishing, nevertheless I picked up some good trout. I got home soon after seven Trout (Wnion) 22
Thus ended my spring fishing, and it was tolerably successful; I killed 553 Trout Largest Trout 1lb 2oz

Monday August 5th A cloudy morning. I made an early start to Talyllyn in the cart with Edward, but I walked some part of the way. A good day for fishing, but trout did not mean rising, only jumping right out of the water. I picked up sixteen small ones by hard fishing. Reached home at 7.30. Trout (Talyllyn) 16 Grouse & orange. Tuesday August 6th A mild and fine day although we heard heavy thunderstorms in the distance, and we had rain. I went up to the Big pool to bathe with Connie Campbell, Cooper and Wynne. ....afterwards we started off to Deudraeth. I went up to Llyn Cynwych [sic], and joined Millais, and we fished for Perch, and had good sport with live minnows, despite the thunderstorm. I dined with the Millais`, and walked down afterwards with a Lantern. Perch (Llyn Cynwych) 37 20 which I caught.

Thursday August 8 I started off to Caeafon at 8.30 to meet Kinsey there with the dogs, and we ran them over the moor, beating the best part of the ground. We saw four coveys, but the birds were rather small. I returned home about 2 o`clock, and got in soon after 4: coming down the hill by Penantigi. This evening at 730....

Friday August 9th Connie Campbell, Cooper and I went up to the Big Pool to bathe: and Charles Owen, Williams "Snippy" comes to breakfast and at 11 o`clock the five of us went up Cader by the Foxes Path, and had a good climb. We lunched just at the top of the Foxes path, as there was a good spring of water there, the spring at the top being dried up. We started down soon after 3; & Campbell, Cooper, and I came down a very steep and loose place but we got down alright, and joined the other two, and we reached home about 5.30. The atmosphere was very clear on our way up but as the wind went round to the SE, it was very misty when we reached the top.

Saturday August 10th A very wet morning, so much so that I went out on the river early; but the rain made no perceptible difference on the river. I had to go down to the Board of Guardians at 11 o`clock and was kept there till 2: ...... after lunch Wynne, Pryce, and I went out fishing, there being about a foot of water down. I finished up to the Viaduct, and killed 34 nice trout. Wynne 40 and Pryse 11. The trout rose very well sometimes, and I rose a Sewin in the Ford pool, and Wynne also rose two. Green Price and Sir Brook Boothby arrived today by the 6.30 train but it was very late.... Trout (Wnion) 85

Sunday August 11th Weather unsettled, started over to Dinas Mawddy [sic] this afternoon.... Heavy rain fell as we drove over.
Monday August 12th Very wet morning, but fortunately it cleared up, and turned out a very pleasant day. Cooper and I went on Caeafon, while Wynne and Green Price started over in the carriage to Llanymawddy [sic], and shot Llwyngwyllyn. We started up on the hill at 7.15: and began shooting about 8. We did not see many birds, but as powder was straight, we accounted for most we did see. We shot til 5: and then went down to Dinas, and drove over to Llanymawddy, and put up at the Tun. Wynne and Green Price being at the farm house.
The bags were CEME, Cooper Caeafon Grouse 16
HC Green Price W Edwards Grouse 12. Birds rather backward, but on Llwyngwyllyn fairly plentiful.

Tuesday August 13 Wynne and Green Price joined us at 8.30, and we started together to shoot Bwlch-y-groes, but the weather turned out awful. We saw plenty of birds but they were very wild, and it was not to be wondered at considering the weather. Heavy rain came on about 12, so that after lunch we had to beat a hasty retreat. Wednesday August 14th Weather worse than ever, so we returned home as I had telegraphed for the carriage fetch us. Wynne, Green Price, Banbury and I went over to the Mawddach about 12. We began fishing at Llanelltydd [sic] and fished up. The river was in first rate order, but fish rose badly. Monday August 19th We drove into Knighton this morning, and caught an early train to Llangunllo, I`m from there walked up to the shooting lodge: and when we had got our guns out, we started out shooting. We beat the Stanking Hill during the morning and so good many grouse also some blackgame. Our lunch did not arrive till 2 o`clock, and we were quite ready for it, as we had a hard walk this morning..... but the light became very bad for shooting. We beat the Beacons, and saw a good many birds. We gave up about 5.30, return to the Lodge, and had a delicious bathe in the pools, and dined about 7.30. Grouse and Blackgame 21 Spanking Hill and Beacons Guns 3....

Tuesday August 20th We bathed in the Pool, before breakfast, and then started to beat the Lower Beacon`s [sic], and had a most pleasant day`s sport. Sir Richard rode with us in the morning, but left at lunch time. During the afternoon we shot over the Beacons, and as the dogs worked much better today than yesterday, we had good sport. Returned to the lodge, and bathed and dined, and then drove down in the cart to catch a train at Llangunllo, and Chase most skillfully upset us, but fortunately no damage was done. We caught the train to Ludlow, and went to the "Archery Ball", and put up at the Feathers Tun: Grouse 32 Blackgame 4 Snipe 1 The Beacon`s Guns 3....

Thursday August 22nd Chase, Cox and I started over to Nant y groes to shoot rabbits with Dick Price; and used ferrets, there being a rare lot of rabbits, but they bolted very badly, the season being no doubt too early for ferreting. It was a windy but fine day and by hunting hedge rows and banks with terriers afterwards we made up out bag to 54 rabbits. Saturday August 24th I had breakfast at 7.30, feeling refreshed after a tub and drove over to Tyn y groes in the cart and [`Trim`]. River in fair order, but of course falling rapidly. I fished up to "Meeting of the Waters" by lunchtime, and caught 3 Sewin, but had no sport at all in the afternoon, although I tried the Eden with small flies; and some good pools in the Mawddach afterwards. Sunday August 25th A beautiful day. I went to bathe this morning at the Big Pool .....
Monday August 26th A very fine, sunny day. Coxe, Wynne and I with Kinsey and the dogs went up to Llanymawddwy by the 8.40 train, and from there walked up on Bwlch y groes to shoot. Had a hard day`s walking, there being no scent for dogs: but we were tolerably lucky our baggage and provisions had been sent to Llanymawddwy, to which we went and had to put up with Llanymawddwy rough quarters. A bathe in the river much refreshed us, and we had a good dinner. Dr Roberts came in from Bryn to chat with us after dinner. Grouse 10 Hare 1 Bwlch y groes Guns 3

Started up Llwyngwilim [sic], but the weather was very unfavorable for beating the hill, as the wind was all wrong and we had frequent and heavy showers. Came home this evening from Dinas Mawddy, and had a very wet drive home, and took a long time as it was pitch dark and we had only one light, and were in a gig and only had a pony.
