Friday August 30th I breakfasted at 8.30, and with John Davis walked over to the Mawddach, and began fishing at Gethigemlyn [sic ], and Wynne driving over, joined me later. River was low, but a good colour. I caught a nice sea trout of 2 [and a half pounds], just below Tyn y groes, but this was the only fish I caught all day. Wynne was blank. We drove home. Sea trout (Mawddach) (1) 2 [and a half pounds].

Sunday September 1st A fine though dull day. Went to Church this morning
Saturday September 7th A misty, dull day which turned to rain in the afternoon. Wright and I started with Kinsey to shoot Cors y garnedd. We had a hard mornings work beating the scrub, and not having a shot, only seeing one hare. Besides I beat all the top part of the mountain, on the chance of seeing some grouse. However after lunch we came on a very good covey of partridges, out of which we killed 3 birds. But afterwards as the weather got so bad we could not find them again. We got home about 5.30, and I went out on the river, which was very low, but I saw two sewin follow my fly in the Ford Pool. Cors y garnedd Guns 2 Partridges 3 Hares 2

Sunday December 1st A cold and showery day
Monday December 2nd A frosty morning, and a beautiful day. Wynne and I went off about 8 o`clock for a rough day to see if we could pick up some snipe, and we had a pleasant walk, beating up Coed marsh to the Fron mines up to the Moel and then over to Caerynwch moor to Perthi. Saw two Woodcock in Moel Caerynwch wood, but Wynne missed them. Snipe very scarce. Fron mines Partridge 2 Hare 1 Caerynwch & Perthi Snipe 4

Tuesday December 3rd We shot the coverts today, and had a fine day. Woodcock remarkably scarce, as also were rabbits. We were beaten by a good many pheasants, but this was greatly owing to the beating, which during the morning was not good. I killed one Woodcock and Smith the other. Guns 7 .... Thursday December 5th A fine and bright day. We had an unsuccessful tramp after woodcocks, which we did not see. We killed one woodcock on Lyttyrhys [sic Lletyrhys?]; but only saw one other at Bryn bras! We did not come across many pheasants. We lunched at the Torrent walk bridge, and then beat right up the Caerynwch woods without seeing a woodcock. Smith and I then went on to Coed where we saw a few pheasants, and another woodcock and we got home by dark. Friday December 6th Very cold morning, and a sharp shower of snow fell.... we started out to shoot the coverts. We had a pleasant day, but powder was not so straight as it ought to have been, and I ought to have killed 3 woodcock; as it was only one was killed by Smith. Saw no rabbits at all: but there were [sic ] a fair number of pheasants: and we got them in the corner where we did on Tuesday. Fortunately we finished just before the rain came on. Sunday December 8th A fine and cold day....
Monday December 9th Frost very hard this morning. We beat Lyttyrhys [sic Lletyrhys ] and part of the home coverts;.... Our bag was small, but powder was crooked. I went away this evening to Town, and had a very cold journey up. I was very sorry to go, very sorry indeed.

Saturday January 4th The train left Corwen at 6.50; and I had a very cold journey down. After breakfast, Wynne and I went for a walk over Blaenau with.John Davis was with us, Hide, and the two spaniels. It was a fine frosty morning, and we had a pleasant walk. Saw one woodcock, but did not get a good chance at him, although we flushed him four times! The ground was far too hard for snipe, and we only saw the one we killed. Sunday January 5th A fine frosty day.
Monday January 6th a hard frost. We were doubtful about starting this morning to shoot over the Traeth, so hard was the frost, but we started, and caught the 9 o`clock train, and reached Minffordd about 10.45. Of course we found the Traeth as hard as nails but we determined to see what we could do, so set to work. Fortunately we found some partridges of which we knocked over three, and found the island covert the warmest and best place. In this, I killed two Woodcock and we might have slain two or three pheasants. We only saw Five or six snipe all day, very wild, and two wild duck, one of which I bagged. We reached the station about 4 o`clock, changed our wet stockings, and arrived at home in time for dinner.

Tuesday January 7th Strong SE gale blowing, with driving snow during the afternoon. Despite the weather, I started out with John Davis and spaniels and went to Tyddyn but Woodcock or not to be seen although I beat all the best places. Only saw a cock pheasant, and some rabbits on way home. I tried down the river for duck, but did not see any, and got home wet and tired.

Saturday January 18th I started over to Talyllyn to see if I could kill some ducks, and arrived at Tyn y Cornel [sic] about 12.45. Weather quite mild, in fact a most extraordinary change from yesterday. After lunch, I proposed to launch a boat, as there were a great many pochards on the lake, but as Mrs Jones objected, I did not press it further, and started off to see what I could do offshore. For a long time I waited in ambush at the far end of the lake, sending John Davis round to put the duck up and if possible, drive them towards me. But it was all in vain, and they never came in range of a wire cartridge. John Davis had, however, fired a shot in the rushes - so I joined him, and found he had knocked over a fine Mallard. We beat up the hedgerow, and up got another Mallard, which I knocked over. This ended the days sport, and we trudged home, and I thought myself lucky to have got 2 Mallard off the shore. Had I had a boat I think we might of had accounted for a few Pochards. Reached home soon after dark.

Monday January 20th Went up by 8.40 train to Pale, to stay for three days shooting. Weather awfully cold. As soon as I arrived we went up to Drws coed and shot that covert and Ty Ucha. Did not see many birds, but covert were very bare owing to the snow and severe frost therefore birds ran a long distance. Only saw two Woodcock, and I had a difficult shot at one.

Tuesday January 21st Another very cold day. WInd [veering?] NE and biting cold. We went up to Llandrillo by 9.13 [sic. mesur manwl o amser] train, and Mr. R and I walked up the river after duck, and saw a good many, but they work very wild indeed. Mr. R however, knoked over a widgeon [sic] at a long shot. We beat Tiphos [Ty Ffos?] wood and Barnas [Branas?], and did not have much sport: but it was a pleasant tramp, and we beat some vry pretty coverts. I believe, a woodcock was seen.
Guns [5: enwyd 5] pheasant cocks 14 snipe 1 wild duck 3 Hares 8 Rabbits 6.
I walked home with Tom Sheriff along the river, and we each killed a Mallard duck.

Wednesday January 22nd A cold day, but sunny and bright, which made it warmer. Went up by rail to Berwyn and Captain Taylor, Massey Taylor, and Charles Dickin joined us. We beat the coverts around Nantysilio, and before lunch had poor sport. But the home covert near the house was a real hot comer; 29 pheasant cocks receiving their coup de grace. I was, however, rather unfortunately placed as far as regards [sic] shooting went. No Woodcock seen all day. Returned by rail. Nantysilio guns 6 Pheasant Cock 35 Hares 5 Rabbits 8 = 48

I journeyed home by the 12 o`clock train, and after lunch went up to the Nannau pools to skate: finding the ice rather rough on the lake in the deer park, I went up to the ponds near Nannau, where the ice was perfect, and I much enjoyed my skate.
