Monday 22nd of September 1879. I went off to the Mawddach this morning, and found it in fair order, but rather low. I began lower down than usual, just above Dolelogan [sic]: but did not meet a fish till I came to Gelligemlyn, where I rose a very clean fish 3 times, and [?] him the third. I fished up and got 3 small sea trout: just above Tyn y groes I met Col Romer who had been up to the Falls, so I returned to Gethigemlyn [sic], and went down the river to Vanner Abbey, and walked home. January 7 Wednesday [1880]. I made a rather late start with Kinsey to Corsygarned [sic. Corsygarnedd] in order if possible to kill the woodcock I let off the other day. It was fine though rather misty, but it cleared beautifully in the afternoon. We had no luck before lunch, as we beat more than half of the scrub with no results. But after lunch, much changed and I killed two cock quickly in succession, and I happened to be placed most fortunately. The third bird sneaked off without being shot at, and we never saw it again. To my surprise I killed a fine wild duck, which arose out of some rushes in the adjoining farm. We did not see any hares

January 9 Friday [1818]. We were favoured with a most beautiful day. We drove up to Llandrillo, there meeting Col Lovett of Belmont, and son: the latter just returned from zululand, and Mr Kerr. We shot the Glyn Covert, and had a very pleasant day`s sport. Cock pheasants were rather let off, but it is a difficult covert for good shooting. We came on some woodcock, in a plantation adjoining and I was fortunate enough to kill two almost right and left. A frost set in this evening, and it was very fine

... went to look for Cock at Tyddyn ... a fine frosty day was much in our favour. I was very fortunate in getting shots, missing my first bird, I killed the 3 next consecutively, one a very long shot. Charlie let off a Cock pheasant. We then went onto Coed, & in the holly covert Coed house, we flushed 3 cock almost all together, but Charlie`s powder was crooked.... We saw 3 hares, and by dint of hard walking we found the woodcock we had flushed, but no kill resulted. Home early after a very pleasant day.
N.B. Kinsey beat all over Tyddyn & Coed with the setters on Friday and only saw one Cock! a proof of the uncertainty of Cock shooting; on the same ground today [Monday] we flushed 8, and ought to have killed 6. Experto credo! Tyddyn & Coed Woodcock 3.

Wednesday, July 28 A wet morning. Breakfast at 7:30 and drove over to Tyn y groes and stayed there: I began fishing at Gethi gemlyn [sic Gwlligemlyn?] and killed two or three nice sewin there with the worm, and the river rose very rapidly, and soon came down very heavily: and became too high for fishing. I crossed over at Bryn cemlyn bridge and went down to Llyn Coch but it was too high, and I went down to some holes below, and here had a [nightly sell??] with a big eel, as he ran out in the stream and took me below the afon Wen where I could not follow, I gave the right to John Ellis and ran round by the bridge, and great was my disgust when I pulled out this big eel! I went round to Gethigemlyn again but I did no good there, so I ended up at the Meeting of the Waters: above which in Mawddach I killed 4 sewin, making my bag up to 15. The river was muddy all day. Weather showery and unsettled.

July 1880 Dolserau Saturday 24th Left Paddington this morning by 10 o`clock train for Home. On arriving at Bala I found that the destruction caused to the railway by the late heavy thunder storm had not been repaired, so I had to drive. A four horsed bus was the mode of conveyance and a very slow one it was too, and I did not reach Home till 10 o`clock. It rained a good deal during the drive. I had the box seat, but did not get very wet. Put up at the Farm, where Mrs Price made me most comfortable.

July 1880 Sunday 25th went round the place this morning, saw Kinsey and the dogs: and came into lunch. This afternoon I walked round Llanelltyd to see what order the Mawddach was in, and I also called at Hugh Jones`s house and sat and had a chat with him. He gave me a sad account of the number of fish destroyed by the late unprecedented flood. I walked round Gethigemlyn and Llanfachreth home. A fine and sunny day, succeeded by a dull cloudy evening with every sign of rain.

July Monday 26th Heavy rain fell during the night, and it was showery all day. Breakfasted at 6:30 and about 7.30 drove over to the Mawddach. Found the river in high yellow flood consequently began at Gethigemlin with worm. Was not very lucky here only killing two small sewin: but in the run above I killed two good fish, and broke in a 3rd stupidly striking too hard. Crossing over Bryn cemlyn bridge, I went to the pool below and killed a[3?] fine sewin there. I then went up to the Meeting of the Waters, which to my great surprise I found did not exist: the Eden having hurled rocks and stones into the pool during the late heavy storm: in fact the Eden was a most extraordinary height. we are doing at most texts was a most extraordinary site height. Above the junction I killed a good sewin: and then after lunch I crossed over to Eden, an unlucky move, as I fished right up to the larch post without stirring a fish. The river was a very bad colour. I went down to Eden Bridge (Pen y Bont) and the trap here met me and I finished up at the Gethigemlin [sic Gelli gemlyn] killing three sewin with fly and loosing [sic losing] a 4th. The weights of my fish were very good. Seven sea trout weighed 13 3/4lbs. Mawddach. Sea trout 12 ..... [manylion yn y gwreiddiol] 9 caught with worm 3 caught with fly 5 B trout

Tuesday 27th July Fine day, cloudy strong breeze very unsettled looking weather. Started punctually at 3 over to Gethigemlin [sic Gelligemlyn] -walking over. Began fishing at the Poachers` Rock, and here Hugh Jones met me. Went below and in the pool above Dolcloccards hooked a nice sewin 2 1/4lbs on small thunder and lightning. Returns to Gerthi gemlin [sic] and fished steadily up to meeting of waters. Killed another fish just below Tyn y groes and lost a third at the Meeting of the Waters. I met several other fish, but they took badly. I did not go above the Meeting of the Waters but returned and fished some pools down but did not stir another fish. Hugh Jones left me at Tyn y groes and I returned to the Poachers` Rocks but somebody was fishing there so I went to the long pool below Dololocards [sic] and gave up fishing there. Walked home by Llanelltyd – the weather was rainy in the evening. Mawddach. Sea trout 3. (1) 2 1/4 pounds, (1) 1 1/2lbs. Brown trout 1

Thursday, July 29 I breakfasted at 8, and was on the point of starting to the Eden, but out as I was on the point of going down came the river in flood, as a good deal of rain had fallen. I began well at Llyn Goch [sic. llyn Coch] killing three nice Sewin with worm one being 2 1/2lbs. I went round to Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn] but could do nothing there so afterwards I went all the way round to Eden and went up Craig gwyn [sic Craig Wen?] but did not stir the fish: but in the rocks below. I killed one Sewin (1 1/4lbs) and lost another. I returned to Gethi gemlyn in the evening and killed two more sewin with fly one a very nice fish 1 3/4lbs in the run above, and one at the tail end of Gethi gemlyn. Returned to Tyn y Groes late in the evening. Mawddach and Eden Sewin (1) 2 1/2 (1) 1 3/4 (1) 1 1/4 (1)1lb. The sewin of 1 1/4 pound was killed on Eden Trout 1

Friday, July 30 I started out about 8.30 and fished steadily up to the Meeting of the Waters with fly., But the river was a very bad colour, though a nice height. I only killed one sewin and that was one 1 1/4lb at the railings. After [xxx] I went round to Eden which was a good colour: but I did not stir the fish, but I saw one nice salmon jump. I fished up to Craigwyn [sic] , and in the holes below killed one nice sewin and lost another. Afterwards I went up Mawddach, which was a beastly colour – muddy, and quite unfit for fly, so I turned down again below the Meeting of the Waters and killed a small sewin on the way down. I returned Home this evening, the trap coming to meet me.
This makes my total for the five days 41 Sewin

Saturday, 31 July 1880 A fine day. Wind NW and fresh. I rode over to Talyllyn on the pony and arrived there at about 10.30. Was soon on the Lake, but found that the trout were not rising, and I only saw two or three rise to `natural` all day: and there were very few flies on the water. The wind blew rather too strongly: and consequently a boat was hard to manage. I killed 11 fish: returning 4 and keeping 7 nice ones. As the weather looked very threatening about 5.30 I returned home, and just in time before rain came on. I was very tired with my long ride, but the pony went very well. To bed early.

Tuesday, August 3, [1880] I started early and fished up the Wnion with small flies. I began at the crooked pool, and fished right up to Bont Llyn Rhaidyr [sic], but my sport was poor as I only rose one sewin, but I spotted several nice fish notably one in Dolgarnedd wood which I saw rise, but I could not get him to look at my flies, and I eventually scared? him by flinging worms in front of his nose. I walked up to Coedmaeswglog to see and talk with Mr Harris about the shooting: he readily gave me full leave. I returned home, tried some pools near home, but soon went in. Wnion Trout 30

Wednesday 4 August I walked up To Llyn Cynwch this morning, it was a cloudy and misty day with a variable wind: not at all a day I should go up perch fishing. As there was a nice breeze I began with fly, and caught a very nice trout of half a pound, and rose two or three more. I then commenced perch fishing, and had not much difficulty in getting minnows for bait. The perch bit remarkably well between 4 and 6, and I missed a good many. After six a sudden mist came on which materially affected my sport. I stayed tho` at the Lake till 7.30. A fine evening

Thursday, August 5 1880 A warm day with a misty rain all the afternoon and evening. I started out this morning up the Wnion and began fishing at Dolgun and fished steadily up. I rose one sewin in the Ford and caught a small one above Bont Newydd. I went up as far as Bont Rhiadyr [sic], but the trout rose badly, and the heavy rain drove me home rather early. I dined this evening at Caerynwch.

Friday 6 August 1880 Richie came down from Caerynwch this morning at 8:45, and drove over with me to Tyn y groes. I began fishing at Gethi Gemlyn [sic. Gelli Gemlyn] and the river was in fair fly order, but rather thick, and the sudden rise about midday spoilt the fishing, and about 1.30 a steady downpour of rain came on and continued nearly all day. Richie left me at the Meeting of the Waters, and I went up to the Falls with Hugh Jones, but as soon as we got up to the top pool, a heavy flood came down. I eventually returned to the Meeting of the Waters and fished up with worm. I caught two sewin.
Mawddach. Sewin 3 (1) 1 1/2 pounds I got a good many trout with a worm. Number not kept.

Saturday 7 August [1880]. I went out to the river at 8:45. John Ellis with me. Began fishing above Tyn y groes and rose a salmon three times in Dolgoed pool.: But he missed the fly each time. I was much disappointed in not hooking the fish. I fished up to the Meeting of the Waters, and rose several sewin, but they came very shyly at the fly. I caught a small one at the Long flat, and then as rain was coming down in one continuous downpour, I determined to go down to Gethi Gemlyn [Gelli Gemlyn] and await the flood. I tried the pool above and captured a nice sewin of 2 1/2lbs, and hooked and lost a small one at Gethi Gemlyn. I then retreated into the farm for lunch, and when I returned to the river it was in raging flood, and it soon became quite unfishable. I lingered about up to the Meeting of the Waters in the hopes that it would fall, but it did so very slowly, and was a white milky mud colour. The wind, after a sharp thunderstorm, veered round to the NE and it continued showery and turned much colder I never saw the Mawddach so high before; the water was splashing over Bryncemlyn Bridge. The Wnion rose a great height and a great many fields were under water. Drove drove home this evening: the trap coming to fetch me.
