Monday, October 4, 1880 Frank and I with Kinsey and the spaniels, and William Roberts [ ] as usual to beat went up to Corsygarnedd. We could not find any partridges, but came across some young pheasants rather too small to shoot. We killed a hare, and saw 4 others and a good many rabbits. We beat the scrub very carefully but of course it was tremendously thick..... Corsygarnedd Hare 1 Hen Pheasant 1 Rabbit 1

Tuesday, 5 October [1880]. It rained very heavily during the night, and was raining this morning with a very cold Easterly wind blowing, so cold that snow is lying thickly both on Arran and Cader. We made an early start to the Mawddach, and went up to Pen y Bont, and found the Eden just a nice height and colour , But not a fish could we move. From there we went up the Mawddach to the Falls, but the river was too dirty for fly until quite late in the evening. I tried worm at the top pool below the Falls, and hooked a good fish, but whether it was a large Sewin or salmon I could not tell. I caught two Sewin, one of about 2lbs. I tried a fly later in the evening, and rose a fish at the tail of the Rock pool: the water was then much discoloured but the river began to fall fast. We were very late home, and got caught in the dark, so that Frank had to lead the pony in from Dolgun gate. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2

Wednesday 6th October 1880 Frank and I went to the Mawddach again, and found it in nice fly order, but the weather was dull and cold with more rain threatening. We began again up the Mawddach and fished steadily to the Falls, and I believe I rose a nice grilse twice in the first long pool in the wood. It looked a good fish. I caught 3 sewin with fly, but met no other fish: there was no rise on them at all. We went to the Meeting of the Waters eventually, and there found all the Mr Lee fishing, but he had no sport. We went below Tyn y groes and fished Gethi gemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn?]. No result at all: it was a disappointing day. Sea trout (Mawddach) 3

Thursday, 7 October 1880 Rain during the night put the river in good order for today, and when we got over there it was all that could be desired. I did not rise a fish till I got to the Minor`s pool (2nd below Falls) [sic. NID Miners`] at the tail end of which I stuck in a nice fish on double hooked Durham Ranger. Had not much difficulty in gaffing him, as soon as I saw I could keep him in the pool. He weighed close on 11lbs, a cock fish, very long and had been some time in the river. I rose another fish in the Gold Mine pool, but he would not come a second time. We were home early in good time. Mawddach Salmon [tanlinellwyd] 1 11lbs. Fly D. hooked Durham Ranger The Minors pool.

Friday, October 8, 1880 Some heavy showers of rain fell during the night so Frank and I again went to the river, but we did not start till rather late. It was a dull day, and we found the river in order, but getting [iow]. We went straight up to the Falls and commenced fishing at the top pools. The fish were most sulky and I did not move a single fish all day, Frank had no better luck. We fished down as far as get Gethigemlyn where the trap met us.

Saturday, October 9, 1880 Frank and I with Kinsey and the setters had a long tramp over Caerynwch. Coed and Fron Mines: and a most unlucky day we had as we could not find any partridges, nor do I believe that there are any about. Monday, October 11, 1880 Frank and I with William Roberts and the Spaniels went up Cae coch taking the 8.40 train to Drws y nant. First of all we went on the top for grouse, but found them very wild, we saw about 10 birds. We went for partridges soon after and soon found a covey, but we were very unlucky with them. We saw 5 or 6 hares, all mostly lying in the open: and we accounted for them well. Flushed and killed my first Woodcock in the brushwood: but not without missing him the first time. We came home by the 6 o`clock train. Cae Coch Guns 2. Partridges 4. Hares 5. Woodcock [tanlinellwyd] 1.

Tuesday, October 12, 1880 A very fine day. This morning we beat the strip along the river and killed nine rabbits. We came in to lunch, and then back an hour or so ferreting down Dolgun, and got six more rabbits, two white ones amongst them. At 4 o`clock Nelly, Frank and I indulged in some lawn tennis, and we played till it got dark. Dolserau Strip and Dolgun Rabbits 15

Wednesday, October 13, 1880 Fine though dull day. Frank and I made an early start at 8:45 to the two farms belonging to Mrs Richards up the Mawddach, Hafod Braith. We went through Llanfacreth [sic Llanfachreth] across the Afon Wen and then shooting the Mawddach above the falls we reached Hafod Braith at 11 o`clock. Our principal object in going was to search for Woodcock, but although we beat all the coverts we did not see any but only three hares, and four partridges, one of which Frank shot. After lunch we walked across the hill to Cwm Bleen Glyn [sic Cwm Blaen Glyn?] and I went up to see the tenant regarding the shooting, but I found I could not have it this year. We then went home by Corsygarnedd, and were tired enough when we got in. Hafod Braith Partridges 1

Thursday, October 14 A beautiful day, cold and calm. Frank and I with William Roberts and the spaniels started up to Corsygarnedd soon after 10 o`clock. We began shooting the top of the brushwood and as we were going up near the boundary a fine covey of eleven partridges got up and flew across the boundary. I sent William Roberts round to try and drive them across but he only succeeded in driving one, which we did not get. We got three hares and a rabbit before lunch, which Nelly and Miss Gay brought up in the dogcart, and we had a very pleasant picnic. They accompanied us up to the top of the brushwood and after sundry encounters with a stone wall, they got on the top of a rock where they had a very good view of our proceedings. I flushed and killed a Woodcock (my second this season) in the thickest part of the brushwood near the stone wall. This is the only one seen all day. Corsygarnedd. Woodcock [tanlinellwyd] 1. Saturday, October 16, 1880 Weather very fine; warm and bright. Frank and I with Kinsey and the Setters went up to Blaenau, but we did not start till 930. We began shootIng on Cefn newydd, but could not find the covey of birds on that farm, but after some hard work we found a good covey on Braich Beddw [sic. Braich Bedw]: but we very [sic] unlucky with them as I only killed a brace out of it: the rest flew over the boundary. Nelly and Miss Gay came up to lunch which we had in the Farm house. Afterwards we had a fruitless walk right over the Freeths above Blainnau [sic., sic], and saw no grouse or snipe, and it was not till the evening that we came across a fine covey on the stubbles, but they proved very wild and strong birds quite unapproachable and as it was now nearly 5 o`clock we had to leave them alone. As we were going home we put a 3rd covey off a stubble near Cefn newydd! dogs were of little use, scent being bad, and there was no wind at all. Better luck next time! Partridges 2. Hare 1 Blaenau. I am sorry to say on Lettyrees I saw signs of rabbit poaching-two [...arrows] being dug up. In Captain Hill`s potatoes I found two steel traps and a snare, and I took them to his house, and requested him not to set them above ground. We went up on the Freeths before lunch, but I only killed a snipe. After lunching at a Scefn newydd [sic. Thursday, October 21, 1880 glorious day, but very cold. Frost intense for the time of year, 15° registered! Frank Fletcher I am sorry to say went away this morning by the early train, and after he had gone, I drove up to Bont Llyn Rhiadyr, [sic. Bont llyn Rhaeadr] and walked up to Coedmaeswglog. Kinsey carried a gun, and we had the setters. We saw a good number of grouse on the hill, and I ought to have killed a brace as Kinsey and William Roberts drove four birds right over my head. We saw a pack of 15, but an attempt at driving them proved fruitless. I missed another good chance at grouse from not being ready on Cefn issa. After lunch we tried the partridges and found a fine covey on the stubble, but we [sulked?] them terribly and only got one bird out of the covey, and we failed to find the birds again. I walked home by Perthi – but did not find any birds there, although the covey is seen about. Coedmaeswglog Cefn Issa & Cefn ucha Partridge 1 Hare 1 Snipe 1

Saturday, October 23 a fine day for a wander, cold easterly wind. Wyn and "Peter" Stokes having arrived last night, we arranged a day on Tyddyn. Made a start about 9.30 and went up through the wood along the Ffrydd Arrw [sic. Ffridd Arw] boundary and oddly enough flushed a woodcock, but we did not lose time in hunting for him. We found a couple of pheasants and a hare in the dingle, but all got away. On Tyddyn we were no luckier, as we could not find the partridges, and the few pheasants we saw persisted in flying the wrong way – a woodcock was also flushed. The girls came out to lunch and walked with us during the afternoon. We came home through Coed and also looked for the cock flushed this morning but that was not shot at. Thursday, October 28, 1880 Very cold stormy and showery. I made an early start to the Mawddach, and of course found it very high. I went to the upper water and was in hopes the river would fall into fly order, but the Mawddach was dirty all day and fell very little, so I was obliged to fish with worm. I was broken in a good fish [sic] I think and I caught one sewin. As the Mawddach was hopeless for fly, this afternoon I went to the Eden, and found it in good order. I rose and pricked a nice fish in the second pool below Dolgyfeiliau. I went up to Craigwyn: but did not move a fish there. Mawddach. Sewin 1. about 2lbs.

Friday, October 29, 1880 Again went over to the Mawddach. A good deal of snow had fallen on the mountains during the night, but today the weather was settled, but cold. I began fishing at the junction pool, and tried steadily up the Mawddach which was in splendid order for fly all day, tho` high and fell very [tanlinellwyd] slowly indeed. I did not meet a fish till I came to the first long pool in the wood. At the tail end of the pool I rose a good fish twice, but he came shyly to the fly so I left him for the present. My next fish was a magnificent salmon, which rolled right over my fly, in the first pool below the Falls. I tried him again with the same fly a d-hooked Jock O`scotts, and again he came out at it. I gave the fish a long rest, and then tried him a third time, and again he rose at the fly. I determined not to change my fly, and the fourth time he came up and was pricked, and of course all was over after that. I hooked a smaller fish, I think a grilse in the same pool afterwards. Returning to the first long pool in the wood I rose my [sic. first?] fish of the morning again, and scratched him. I caught a nice sewin, and then home: weather turning fine and frosty. Mawddach. Saturday, October 30, 1880 A beautiful day, frosty and fine. After breakfast at 9 o`clock I made a start with Kinsey and William Roberts with spaniels and Hide Em [sic] to Tyddyn and Talsarn. On our way we beat up the big wood to Coed and Kinsey shot a hare, and we saw another: he also killed another near Trefeilian, and after that as we came across no partridges or woodcock we went to Talsarn, but here we could not find birds and after killing the hare we came down to Tyddyn . Flushed two woodcock in the big wood and got neither, but one of them was a very lovely bird indeed! The rest of the day was uneventful as I only got another hare and saw no partridges, but flushed two woodcock in Coed in the dark as I was going homewards; I only had a snap shot at one of them. Wednesday, December 22, 1880 We were to have shot Barnas [sic. Branas] today, but the weather was terribly wet and got worse and worse. However not wishing to keep indoors all day Harry R, G Dickin (who arrived last night) and I took the train to Cynwyd and determined to walk up the river after duck, though the chances were ten to one against our doing any good as the river was far too high. Harry and I went up one side, and George Dickin with a ten-bore - the other. A lot of four duck got up, at long range and I had the luck to knock over a fine Mallard which being only broken winged gave `Leon` some trouble in retrieving. This was really the only chance we had all day, except Harry and I by talking put up two Teal and lost an easy chance at them. Of course we got wet to the skin.
