Friday, December 24, 1880 Very showery all day and gradually turning colder, the wind shifting to the north. Wynne Brace and I made a start about 10 o`clock with Kinsey and the spaniels and beat Coed Caeynwch [sic Caerynwch] and Gwanas. We found a woodcock on Coed but Wynne let him off . A covey of 3 partridges also gave us a chance which however I failed to take advantage of. Three snipe rose on Coed Marsh and one knocked over, and two other snipe one a Jack, and the hare made up our bag. We were on open ground most of the afternoon, and kept on one side of the river. We lunched at the Cross Foxes. TEST

Saturday, December 25 Xmas day ushered in with more appropriate weather as there was snow on the ground with some frost and after a showery morning (snow and sleet) the weather was fine with a Northerly wind. Church in the morning, and after lunch Wynne Frank Brace and I walked up to Helygog and came back along the road by Bont Rhiadyr.

Monday, December 27, 1880 We shot through our coverts today, and fortunately had a fine day to do so. We were four guns, but the shooting was exserable [sic]: and we ought to have killed 4 woodcock and the only one killed was one on Brynbras, which I got. Rabbits were not very plentiful, but we were in want of a couple of more guns [sic]. We finished the covert just in time. Saw about 6 pheasants, and killed two hens along the drive.

Thursday, December 30, 1880 Went up this morning to Llanderfel [sic Llandderfel] by the first train: to shoot at Palè. A fine frosty morning with snow very thick on the mountains. We were eight guns, and beat Dergoals [sic] and Braunus [?Branas]. I was very lucky in killing the two woodcock shot, and did my fair share of the shooting.
The guns were 8: as follows: Tom Ellis. Jenkins. Caverley. Fred Peacock. J. Deane. Harvey R. Mr R and CME.

Friday, December 31, 1880 The same guns as yesterday barring Tom Ellis shot The Glyn and Llandrillo coverts. A good many coverts had been beaten into the Glyn, but cock Pheasants were very wary & wanted a deal of killing. Some very high rocketers came over the Glyn, but I was really forward gun on the side, and killed three very high shots. After lunch we beat along the hillside above Tynant, and saw a few pheasants, but hens were not killed all day. Mr Robertson got the woodcock, but there were two or three others flying about. Hares were pretty plentiful, but a great many got away behind the beaters not shot at, especially on the Llandrillo hill. Guns 7

...snow began to fall and continued more or less throughout the day and it was very cold: the frost being intense. I began at the Dolgwarthog boundary and flushed a WK [woodcock]...On then to Litterice where another cock rose out of the soak in the dingle, and Kinsey failed to kill, and we could not find this bird again. The rest of the day was uneventful as we only saw another cock...and I did not get a shot.. I killed a snipe in the marsh and saw a couple of hares but did not take a shot. Caerynwch Snipe 1. Coed 3C [3 cock]. Rabbit 2.

Kinsley killed at Dolserau between January 12th.. and February 1st.. Woodcock 2. Snipe 2. Hares 1. Weather was intensely cold until 25th January. The therm [thermometer] on several nights being registered at 2 or 3 degrees below zero - snow was not lying so thick as other parts of England [sic] but the frost (as everywhere else) was the severest known for years. ... The season has been a bad one for sport at Dolserau. excepting perhaps Grouse. the total killed being 113, but then I worked harder than usual over the Dinas Mawddy [sic] country, and shot the moors rather close. to the detriment, I am afraid, of the prospects for next season: but it is impossible under the circumstances, to pursue any other course over there! woodcock very scarse this year, most unaccountably so. Hares rather more numerous. and a few partridges about, but snipe nil.[?] The total killed from August 12th 1880 until February 1st 1881 was as follows:- Grouse 113. Partridges 23. Pheasants 10. Snipes 15. Woodcock 11. + 1 Kinsey killed 1 Wk after Feb 1st. Hares 32. Rabbits. 155. killed between January 1st 1881 and March 15th.

Fred Arkwright was anxious to have some wild pheasant killed - Weather very cold but fine and sunny during the day. saw a fair stock of birds and plenty of hares but powder was erratic, however we enjoyed the walk immensely, the country being very pretty... Very hard white frost during the night. Brilliant sun all day. wind easterly, but calm. .. 9.30 .. I went up to Llyn Cynwch.. and fished off the shore. I saw a few fish rising, and the warm sun brought a few flies out... I landed a nice trout about 1/2 lb and soon after got another about the same size. I rose two others, hooking one of them and losing it. About 3 I left the Lake and went down to the river, which however was full of snow water, so I could do little good: and I came in early. Very cold after the sun went down. Llyn Cynwch. Trout 2. Wnion. Trout 10.

I caught 3 trout from the boat, but then the wind got up and I left the Lake and went down by Path Gelli to the Wnion and fished homewards but I only caught 3 trout. I then came home. Fishing was out of the question today, a cold East wind was blowing and it was very strong. ..a long walk .. ascended Arran, reaching the top about 11.30. It was very cold on the top and there were large patches of snow on the ground. ... dined at Bryn - y- gwyn .. . I was not home till late as Charlie Owen. Griffiths and I sat talking and smoking.

Wind strong and squally from the S.E., but the sun was hot and bright... went up to Llyn Cynwch: of course I could not fish from the boat. so I fished al day from the shore, and picked up 5 very nice trout, one being 3/4 lb. I lost two others, and rose one or two others. I did not see a single fish rise to the "Natural" all day. I gave up fishing about 5 o`clock as it was useless after the sun had gone off the water. The Blue dun and Whicham`s Fa??y killed best. Llyn Cynwch. Trout 5 /1/ 3/4 lb.

A fine warm day. .. drove to .. fish above the The Falls of the Mawddach .. and began just above the first wood .. I killed 15 very nice fish in this open bit of water.. I did not do so well later, and the river was low, however I picked up a few ... Mawddach above Falls Trout 51. Two rods.

A fine day. Showery, but rather cold. .. walked up to Llyn Cynwch... and as the Lake was calm we had the boat out. Rain came down heavily, and the Lake was very calm. I caught 4 trout during the morning, but they were small. .. after lunch I went down to the river, and fished from Llyn-y-Fontin to Bont Newydd but the river was rather too full for up stream fishing.
