Friday, August 5 It was a fine morning, and sunny, but the wind was very strong from S. I did not go to the Mawddach, but walked up Llyn Arran [sic], intending to fish the Cader Lakes, as it apparently was going to be a bright day. But some ominous clouds appeared gradually, and so after lunch I did not stay, but came down to the river, which I tried without success. I think I caught six trout in Llyn Arran, of course, small. Lorna and Hide came with me for my walk.

Saturday, August 6, 1881 As a good deal of rain fell yesterday afternoon, I went over to the Mawddach, driving as far as Dolgarthan, and sending the trap home. The river was rather low, but a good colour. I did not raise a sewin until I came to Gethigemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn], at the tail end of which I met a fish, in the run above I got a small sewin, & I was then going on to try the Bryn Cemlyn rocks, when I met four boys and a man fishing down, so I walked straightway to Cornelius` and had my lunch at that pool, and then commenced fishing just above. I fished mostly upstream and in one of the first holes I hooked a nice fish which turned out to be a small Grilse of 2 3/4 lbs. It was rough work fishing through the wood, and the midges and flies were awful. I caught another sewin about 1lb and lost enough [sic. another?] . I walked up to the first long pool in the wood, to try the top of that, and then started homewards about 4.30 a long walk, but which I accomplished in less than 2 hours. sewin (Mawddach) 2 (1) 1lb. Grilse 1 2 3/4 lbs. Fly yellow [molar?] body, Duck wing, yellow Hackel.

Sunday, August 7 A threatening looking morning.... Monday, August 8 Rain fell heavily during the night: and I got up about six o`clock and went out for an hour on the Wnion, and with fly caught two small sewin at the Ford Pool. I rose one at the crooked pool and one at the pool in the hollow, in to breakfast at 8 o`clock, and then Davies and I started over to Mawddach driving up to Pen y Bont and Davies took the trap back to Dolmelynllyn. At Cornelius` pool I caught a nice sewin of 1 3/4 pounds: and then went up Eden; I did not meet a good fish till I got up to [Craigwryn], halfway down which pool I saw a boil at my fly, which was no doubt a big fish. I rose him to thunder and lightning, and then tried him with Durham Ranger, but he would not come again, so I had lunch it now being 1 o`clock and I cast over the fish afterwards, but he would not move. I continued fishing to the end of the pool, and at the very end just as I was making my last cast, I stuck in a good fish, which gave me a bit of running about, as he did his best to leave the pool, but I coaxed him up and just as I got him in a good position, the fish came away, and I lost him – a fish about 9lbs. I caught three sewin in Eden, one of 2lbs – and then about 4.30 I crossed to Mawddach, and tried steadily up from Tyddyn y Gladys, but could not meet a fish, so I went up to the top pools and as the river was pretty high, I put on a good size double hooked "Jock Scots" which had the desired effect, as in the Minor`s pool, I stuck in a good fish, which I landed after a short tussle: he was very long and much below weight, having been in trouble before, apparently last year as there was a hole where the hook had been in the upper jaw. I tried the top pool and at the tail end of it hooked a fine salmon which rushed up to the head of the pool, made one plunge and was off. I had a long walk back, and we did not get home till 8.45 . Mawddach: Salmon 1 9lbs double hooked Jock Scots. Sea trout (1) 1 3/4 pounds. Eden: Sea trout 3 (1) 2lbs Six sewin Wnion: Sea trout 2

Tuesday, August 9 [1881]. I got up before six, and went out on the Wnion, and it was in capital order for fly. I went up to the big pool, but did not hook a fish until I came to the pool opposite Pugh`s farm, here I lost a good sewin. I fished down to the pool in the hollow, at the tail end of which I hooked a fine fish, which after some trouble I landed; it was exactly 3 pounds. I went to the Petty Sessions this morning and did not get away till 1.30: but I had my fishing things ready and Richie met me on the in the Tunn, and he I Davies went over in the car. We had our lunch on the way to save time, and we drove up to Pen y Bont as I went to the upper part of the river, as the lower part was being well fished, I commenced at Eden bridge pool and caught a small sewin here, and at Cornelius` got to sewin and rose a grilse twice and hooked him, and he gave me good sport, and I gaffed him myself: he was fresh-run, and a very pretty fish. I tried up to the Falls but did not rise of fish of any sort . We were home late. Wnion Sea trout 1. 3lbs `Pool in the Hollow`. Eden. Sea trout 1 Mawddach. Wednesday, August 10, [1881]. Still more rain. I rose early, and went out on Wnion before breakfast but only caught a small sewin. Richie came down at 11, as I was anxious to give him a lesson with the gun, and we took a walk after rabbits, but such pouring rain came on we found none out. After lunch went out on Wnion and fished up to Bont Newydd: the river had risen an inch or so, I caught two sewin – one at the top of Llyn Goch [sic] with worm: a nice fish, the other – small with fly. Thursday, August 11, [1881]. A very wet day, and stormy. Wind SW. This morning made preparations to start for Maesygamdda to shoot on Caeavon: and Lewis Self arrived to accompany me. We made a start after lunch in the carriage, intending to go over Penantigi Hill, but we found the mist and rain so bad, that we drove to Tyncelyn, and walked over from there; of course we reached Maesygamdda very wet, but had a change with us, and we were made as comfortable as possible. William Roberts came over with us, and Kinsey met us from Dinas. We turned in early, and the weather looked more hopeful towards evening, but still very gloomy.

Friday, August 12 we were called at 3:30 and after breakfast made a start for Caeavon: the morning being fine, and light; and we reached our rendezvous soon after 4, just in right time, as we had not to wait long before it was possible to see to shoot. No one came up to interfere with this, but two men were sent up about 6, with the presumed object I suppose of watching the proceedings. We did not come across birds immediately, but the first lot got up very wild, but I killed my first birds out of this. We found two or three nice lots, but the birds were never wilder, and it is only by scattering a covey that we got any at all. There was no scent, and the dogs had not fairplay. Rain came on heavily at 6 and lasted throughout the day, and we found shooting out of the question after 11 o`clock. Richie came up from Caerynwch, and killed his first grouse, I killed the 5 other birds. We made a hasty descent to Tyncelyn, where Jones (who is on the hill) hospitably received us: and we had our lunch there. I sent for the trap, and Lewis Self and I drove up Llanymawddwy and took up our quarters at the Sun Tun, which is now very comfortable. Caeavon. Grouse 6. shooting till 11 AM

Sunday, August 14, 1881 We bathed in the river at 8:30, and had breakfast at 9: and afterwards at 10 Self and I started to walk to Dolserau with the pony, as the former was obliged to return. We took the grouse we had shot home on the pony. The day was showery, but we reached home by 1.15 in comfortable time for lunch: and they were glad to see is at home. I started to ride back at 4 o`clock and reached Llanymawddy [sic Llanymawddwy] about seven: the distance being I suppose nearly 14 miles . Monday, August 15, 1881 I started at the same time as Saturday to Llwyngwilim, and we beat the ground the same way, and saw more birds, and we might of accounted for them better, Kinsey (who was shooting) letting off several. After lunch, which of course I had early, thick wet mist came on, which of course added to our difficulties, but the dogs worked splendidly; I had the three out today, self lending his dog to me. I killed a bird on Pengelli, and a brace on Pant, and reached Llanymawddy [sic. Llanymawddwy] about 4.30, after a hard day. A bathe in the river refreshed me much. Tuesday, August 16, 1881 Very wet this morning. I left [Llanymawddwy] at 7:30 and drove to Tyncelyn: and here Kinsey was to have met me with the dogs, but as he did not turn up, I started up Caeafon with William Roberts, leaving a man to tell Kinsie to follow, but this he never did supposing that I should never shoot in such a mist as hung on the hills, and it was certainly bad enough, but had Kinsie come we should should have killed a few birds, as the mist lifted for an hour or so. As it was I could do nothing, although I saw two nice coveys: only scoring one bird. We attempted a route homewards across Penantigi and lost our way, but I eventually reached home at 5 o`clock, very much disgusted with the results of the day. I very much regretted sending the pointer Grouse home with the trap from Tyncelyn, as I should have found him useful on the hill. I could not help being cross with Kinsey at leaving me thus in the lurch whatever the weather might be. Grouse 1 Caeavon. No shooting

Went to Palé today for a week`s grouse shooting. Went up to Llanderfel [sic Llandderfel] by early train, and went out shooting with Gen. Sir Fred-Campbell and Dr Aithin: we drove up to our ground which was Cwm Blein Mountain. The day was favourable for shooting, as there was a fresh breeze, and good scent, though showers were prevalent. Griffith worked his dogs in the morning, and Edward Evans his, in the afternoon. Sunday, August 21 It was raining most of the day, but most of us went to Llanderfel church this morning, and Harry and I had a walk along the river in the afternoon. Monday, August 22 A lovely day. We trained up to Llandrillo, where the ponies met us, as we started to shoot over the [Scurieaw] and Wein Ganlley on the Berwyn. Harry R and I day shot together, while Mr Roberts and G Bidder went together on the [Scurieaw]. We shot over Wein Ganllau and saw a fair number of birds and did pretty well with them: Harry Robertson shooting very well indeed. We met together at lunchtime, after which Harry and I went right to the top of our beat, and to the top of the Berwyns, from which we had the most magnificent view of the surrounding country; it was very well worth the climb. We resumed our shooting on getting again to the heather, and soon made our bag up, and we had some very pretty sport as we descended along the hillside, where birds lay very well – out of the 42 1/2 brace killed Harry and I killed 25 [28?] brace. Tuesday, August 23 We went up by train to Llandrillo, but as soon as we arrived there the rain came on, and after much indicision [sic], we determined to write the ponies back to Palé, and it was lucky we decided to do so, as I have a heavy thunderstorm with deluges of rain came on during the afternoon, which would not have been pleasant on the hill. As soon as we returned we went out fishing, Harry and I going up the river, while George Bidder went down in the coracle. I tried for salmon, and eventually went to the Bodweni pools, where I was caught in a tremendous shower and thunderstorm. Jenkins kindly asked me in to take shelter at Bodweni, which I did: and as the storm continued with great severity I soon made tracks home: and got in very wet indeed. I did not rise a fish, but saw one jump: the Bodweni pools are magnificent for salmon, and well worth a try when the water is favourable - today it was too low, and became much discoloured by the rain.

Thursday, August 25 It rained heavily from about six o`clock, and continued without intermission all day with heavy squalls from The SW: and it was one of the roughest days I ever remember. Fred Robinson and I started over to Tyn-y-groes about 9 o`clock, and as the river had not come down I went up towards the falls, but when I reached Pen y Bont the Eden was in flood, so I walked up to the wooden bridge and the soon as I got here the Mawddch came down in high and dirty flood. It was too high to fish above so I walked down and met Robinson, who had Davies with him, and off we went to get a Gethigemlyn, and here I began picking up some nice sewin. I ought to mention that Davies killed a nice fish of about 2 1/2 pounds with worm in Tyn-y-groes pool, and lost another. Fred Robinson did not manage the worm well, and I caught 13 out of the 16 . I did well at Llyn Goch [sic] and the rocks above in the evening, the river gradually rising again. Wet and cold (though I changed my stockings and knickerbockers) we started home about 6, and I was seized with a severe attack of spasms and felt very upset on way home: the result of a chill.
