Friday, October 28 I left Rhiwlas this morning, but managed to miss the train, however I came by luggage train to the bridge, and thus got home by lunch time. This afternoon I went for a walk with my gun with Kinsey to Moel Caerynwch, but did not find a woodcock there, but found one opposite the house, but it was then so dark, that I could not see very well and we failed to bag it.

Saturday, October 29 fine frosty morning, and lovely day. I made an early start this morning with beaters, spaniels &c to shoot over Coed and Tyddyn – and Mr Tawney from Caerynwch joined me later. Before he came I killed 2 pheasants (hens) on Coed and a Woodcock and snipe, and I saw two hares. I got another cock on Coed, and we then went over to Tyddyn, and were lucky in finding cock, tho’ we could not find any pheasants, or in fact anything else. But out of the 8 cock we flushed we killed three: and I ought  to have had another. We worked from Tyddyn across Trefeilian to Caerynwch, and in the wood opposite the house flushed another cock, but failed to kill it. Thus we saw 11 cock in all, not bad for this time of year. I went into Caerynwch - had tea, and came home down the torrent.

Sunday, October 30 I did not go to Church this morning, but took a walk to the top of Caerynwch hill; it was a lovely day. This afternoon I walked up to Caerynwch and went to the evening service, and stayed to dine, and came down the torrent Walk with a lantern. There were 15 degrees of frost last night and 7 degrees tonight.

Monday, October 31   It was a lovely morning, but became very cold in the afternoon, with a SE bitter wind, and a change seemed imminent. This morning I walked over the Garth to Cefn Issa, and there Mr Tawney met me from Caerynwch. We had a long walk in the morning after partridges, which we did not succeed in finding, but in the narrow dingles on the hill, we flushed two Woodcock – one of which we killed in the open, and the other I got in the covert below, fortunately getting a good chance at him. We returned in quest of the partridges in the afternoon and found a nice covey of 10, on the stubble, but they gave us a rare dance, and we only killed two, one of which we lost, both the birds very oddly getting up again after being knocked down, and I had great trouble in finding the one, as they both flew straight down hill into the wood. We walked home, and did not get in before dark.

Thursday April 6th ...... I started to Llyn Cynwch, but it was not a very favourable day for fishing anyway, the wind being Easterly, but the sun was bright part of the day. I was very unlucky as I rose several nice trout, but lost two or three, and only got 4. A few fish were rising to the Natural part of the morning but there was little fly on the water. The breeze died away this afternoon so we went to the river and I fished up from our bridge, while M`Micking fished down. I went above Bont Newydd and got 40 trout, mostly red fins. Friday, April 7th "Good Friday". A lovely day, but the wind was strong from the East. Breakfast at 7:30, and we made a long and as it turned out a fruitless, expedition to Llyn Abbi [Ybi?] and the Camlan driving over to Tyn-y-groes, and walking up from there. There was a nice breeze on the pools of the Camlan, and we began there, but I only caught one decent trout, and so we went on to Llyn Abbi, which we reached about 12, and there was a strong breeze blowing, but it was far too cold to do any good, so we returned to the Camlan and I picked up a few small trout, but it was a poor day, but lovely weather to be out in. We drove home and got back in time for dinner. Camlan. Trout 31

We went up to Llyn Cynwch, but the wind was very gusty up there, and never blew in the same direction for five minutes, so we could not rise any trout, and there were very few rising to the Natural. Monday, April 10 Easter Monday. Another very fine day, but there was a white frost this morning – which did not promise well for fishing. We started to Talyllyn about 8.45 in the pony trap, and reached Tyn y gornel about 10.30. There was a nice breeze on the lake, which got rather strong in the afternoon, but there was no fly on the water, and consequently no fish rising - but I managed to pick up a few by hard fishing. I tried from the shore at the head of the lake, though with little success - and late in the afternoon we returned to the bottom, and fished from the boat. I lost 2 or 4,nice trout, which made a material difference to our bag. When the sun went down, some diminutive gnats came on the water which brought a few trout on to rise, but they was very discriminating between the natural and artificial fly. We fished till 7, and dined at 7:30. M`Micking caught 3 trout, and I 14, but they were all small Talyllyn. Trout 17 the red spinner was the best fly

Thursday, April 13 A perfect day for fishing, warm and showery, and after last night`s rain the rivers were in good order. I breakfasted at 8, and made a start to Tyn y groes, and went above the falls, William Roberts came with me. The river was a bad colour for fly, being a slatey blue colour, but it got a very good colour in the afternoon. I made a good bag, and many of the trout caught were a1/4lb. I caught 20 before lunch and 30 after. The March Brown and Red Spinner did best. I fished up to the wooden bridge, and was very late for we had a long tramp back to Tyn y groes, consequently I did not reach home till 9 o`clock. It rained heavily as I drove home, and was pitch dark the latter part of the way. The Squire went to town this evening, so I was all alone. Mawddach (above Falls)50

Friday, April 14 The weather looked awfully unsettled this morning, however I determined to start to Pont Aber geirw, and fish the upper part of the Mawddach, but I had not gone far when pouring rain came on, however I got as far as Corsygarnedd farm, and waited there a bit to see if it would clear; it did a bit and on my went, but it came on to blow and rain in torrents, and before I knew it I was drenched. Fishing in such circumstances was an impossibility, so back I went home again, and went to the Cwyedog [Clywedog], which was in flood. I caught a fine trout with a worm at the Meeting of the Waters, in fact one of the largest I have caught in the Wnion, it was nearly 1lb. I fished partly in the Cwyedog [sic] and the Wnion, which however got too clear for worm, so I came in early being very tired. Clwyedog [sic] and Wnion Trout 24 (1) 15 oz

Saturday, April 15th. Had breakfast at 7:30, and with William Roberts started to fish above the Falls, and put the trap up at Dolmelynllyn. The morning looked very propitious as it was showery and mild, the wind suddenly changed to N East, and it was bitterly cold all day, and my sport was spoilt by this alone, for the river was in perfect order. I fished very hard, and went up to the wooden bridge as on Thursday, but I only caught 18, but they were nice trout; I was quite surprised to find how well they rose in some pools. I fished to 5, and walked back to Dolmelynllyn, and was home at 7:30: and on my arrival found a telegram.... Mawddach Trout 18

Fishing at Whitsuntide 1882 Saturday, May 27 I got up early and was out on the Wnion at 7, but the water which was tolerably high was unfavourable for trout fishing. In to breakfast at 9, and found that Wynne had arrived from Bala, having got so far from Bringhin [sic ?Birmingham] last night. After breakfast we drove up the valley beyond Henfaes and I [....] to fish up the Drwsynant stream, whilst Wyn went up the Wnion to the Cae Coch stream. A showery day was favourable for such work, though I found the wind rather too strong. The stream was full, and I tried worm for some time unsuccessfully, but latterly with an Alder and Cochybonddw [sic] I killed some very good trout – several being 1/4lb. Wynne also had a good day, but his trout were mostly small. I walked home from Drwsynant along the line. CEME Drwsynant Stream Trout 25 WE Wnion to Cae Coch stream Trout 80 = 105 trout

Monday, May 29 Whit Monday Wynne and I with Charlie Owen who had been staying with us and was going to the Carnarvon Horse Show, left by the 9.10 train to Llanbedr to make an expedition to Glowlyn [sic Gloywlyn]. On reaching Llanbedr, we chartered a car to take our bag up to the Farm House near Cwm Bychan where we intended to stay the night . We started from thence after making sundry arrangements, and owing to the stupidity of a boy who offered to show us the way, we got on to some frightfully rough ground above Cwm Bychan Lake and this delayed us rather. However at 12:30 we reached Glowlyn after rather a rough climb. It was a nice day for fishing, breeze steady and the weather fine and bright; but we found the fish rising badly, and some fellows from Harlech had evidently flogged the lake before us, but as they gave us to understand with poor results. Wynne picked up 4, and I one about 3/4 pound, and I lost another of similar size. Fished till 7, and soon down to Farm House, which we found empty, our Host having gone for the day`s spree to Harlech. But we soon found some cooking utensils, and Wynne cooked a very tolerable meal of trout and bacon; we had also some other food brought with us. After a smoke to bed very tired. Glowlyn CEME. Tuesday, May 30 [1882] We made an early start up to Glowlyn, and took an easier route than yesterday. It was a hot day, so it was fortunate we started early, as we escaped the heat. On arrival at the Lake, it was dead calm, but we saw some splendid trout on the move, but they were awfully wary. The breeze made several faint attempts to get up, but we got tired of waiting, so up we climbed to Llyn Dhu [sic]: but we could do nothing here. After an early lunch which we much enjoyed, Wyn lost patience and left me, intending to fish down the Artro and catch the train home. William Roberts remained with me, and then as I had done no good I sent him down to the Farm to get our bag and go to the station in time for the train. Just as he left I rose two good drought, killing one, and subsequently got 3 others, and this was during a steady breeze from the Eastward. Another man with a Lady came up to the lake, but as far as I could see did nothing. The wind again died down, so I left a little before 7: and reached the Victoria Inn Llanbedr in about an hour and 40 minutes. I found that William had gone with the bag so I was without a change. Monday, June 5 Wynne and I, not expecting such a downpour as ensued, made an early start at seven over the hill to Pant glas to fish for trout, but we were not very far on our way when a tremendous downpour of rain came on. Wynne unfortunately was without a mackintosh, so very soon got wet through, I however kept tolerably dry all day with my little mackintosh. The rain was so heavy that by the time we got to Pant glas, the river was almost unfishable, and soon became completely so, however we fished rapidly down, and soon after our early lunch, we went to the Caine [sic Cain], which we found one boiling mass of foam. We could do nothing now, but start homeward, but on reaching Tyn y groes, I determined to try for sewin, to see if there were any in the river. Of course I only had my very small trout rod, with me. The weather here was in excellent trim for worm, and I crossed over to Llyn Coch where I soon killed two little silver beauties, and subsequently I caught a 3rd at the upper Bryncemlyn pool. I left about six, and walked home across the hill via Nannau; the river was getting into quite good fly order when I left, as the rain had ceased about 3. CEME Mawddach Seatrout 3 (1) 1 3/4lb. I fished up as far as this from Gethigemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn], and only met 3 sewin, one of which I caught (1 3/4 lbs) and another I lost in the pool below Tyn y groes. I got up to Cornelius`s Pool about 3.45, not having stirred another fish, and I stupidly commenced to fish this pool with small sewin flies on, and very fine gut. Oh! how I regretted it, for I had not made half a dozen casts when at the edge of the Rock on which I was standing a very fine fish rolled out at my fly and I was fast on him. He evidently took the small red Irish Fly I had on at the tail. The fish was very quiet at first, and preferred sticking to the rocks, and I dared not keep a heavy strain on him. But I moved my position, and I had some hopes of killing him – I was without a gaff and all alone. After an hour`s play it got rather tedious, and I managed to move him and he made a great rush down stream only to return to his former position; again I moved him and this time all was over as he made a rush and a plunge and was off. I had however the satisfaction to find that he had not broken me after nearly an hour and a half`s play: and I think the fish from what I saw of him was quite 15lb. As I was playing him another fish rose near me three times, and I tried for him without success. Afterwards I packed up to walk home, and got in in good time. Wynne had a really good day with the trout, catching 40 – 14 of which were from Pell gelli [sic Pwll y Gele] largest 3/4lb and they were a nice show of fish. WE Pwll gelli Trout 14 Wnion Trout 26 CEME Mawddach Sea trout 1. 1 1/4lb Lost a salmon.

Thursday, June 8 .......I had the boat taken up in the cart to Pwll Gelli [Pwll y Gele?], and I walked up there afterwards, and began fishing about 9.30. The lake is now very full of water which made it all the better as far as the weeds were concerned. A light breeze was blowing and showers fell during the morning which turned to heavy rain in the afternoon. I had capital sport, the fish being well on the rise to a small dun on the water, but I found Wickhams Fancy doing good execution – also a red hackle Coch y bondhu with red tag. I was broken twice by good fish in the weeds, and it required some skill to keep the fish from them when hooked, however I was tolerably lucky in this respect and did not lose many. I finished till 3: but all my sport was obtained before 1.30: as there was no breeze in the afternoon and although I rose fish I could not hook them. I tried the Wnion for sewin afterwards without success: the rivers rose rapidly after the heavy rain: Trout 31. Llyn Pwllgelli (1)1lb. (1) 3/4lb. and several 1/2lb or more
