Friday, June 9 I started over to the Mawddach with William Roberts soon after 8 o`clock, walking across the hill: and I found the river in grand order. Commenced at Llyn Coch with worm, but soon changed to fly, and mounted a thunder & lightning and yellow Body. Mallard Wing fly [sic], and my sport was excellent. I was lucky with the first 3 fish I killed, but I lost one fine sewin in Gethigemlyn [Gelligemlyn] from being in too great a hurry; it was here that I killed the 2 1/2lb fish. I also lost another large one higher up. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool for the second time, at the tail end of it I rose a salmon, and hooked him the second time, but I had him on for a very short time, For he [shook?] the hook out. I ought to have changed to a double [tanlinellwyd] hookedfly. Heavy rain came on, and the river rose gradually, and I went down on the Vaughan`s side to the Gethigemlyn Ford [tanlinellwyd] when I rose a grilse 3 times – and landed him: a perfect little fish as bright as a shilling. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool I found Griffith there, having just landed a 7 pound grilse therefrom. I went into Tyn y Groes about 6, and started William Roberts home over the hill, intending to stay the night at Tyn y groes, as I had sent for my bag. I afterwards went out and fished with worm until nearly 9 o`clock and killed two more sewin. Mawddach Grilse (1) 5 pounds. Fly yellow B Mallard W. Seatrout 6 (1) 2 1/2lbs. (1) 2 pounds (2) 1 3/4lb. (2) 1 1/2 pounds = 16lb . 4 with Fly. 2 with worm.

Saturday, June 10 I was out on the river soon after 8, which had considerably fallen, and I tried some of the little pools but only rose one sewin, so after meeting Kinsey and Lewis Davies, I determined to walk up above, and the latter with William accompanied me [sic]. I put up a small double hooked Durham Ranger, and stuck in a fine fish at the 1st Long Pool in the wood which gave me 20 minutes exciting sport as he was very lively. I gaffed the fish myself weight10 1/2 lbs quite fresh. It is very funny but I never saw the fish take my fly, although Davies did, and I was in the act of clambering along the rock, of course I suddenly found my line tight in something! It is very lucky Davies did not shout when he say [sic. saw] the fish rise, or else a serious smash might have ensued. I fished right up to the Falls, but did not stir another fish. The Squire and Mother met me at 5:45 at Tyn y groes. I hooked a nice Sewin just above wooden bridge. Mawddach Salmon 1 10 1/2lbs Fly D. Hooked Durham Ranger. Earliest fish.

Sunday, June 11 Went to Church this morning, and after lunch walked down with the dogs to Brynhyfryd, and went with Col Bicknell for a walk to look at the river. We went to Llanelltyd, and up to Hugh Jones` cottage, where we were detained by a heavy shower. However we got back fairly dry. I stayed and dined at Brynhyfryd, and had a wet walk home afterwards, however I was not long about getting there.

Monday, June 12 Walked over by myself to the Mawddach, and subsequently Hugh Jones Jun. met me and accompanied me. I did no good below Bryncemlyn – much to my surprise, so I walked up to Dolgoed, which I found in tip top order. As I commenced at the top of the pool, I saw Romer with "Griffy" [wheeling?] up having fished the pool down and had moved a fish at the bottom of it. As I was talking to Romer, I saw a nice fish rise to my fly – Thunder & lightning – under water. After a rest I tried him again with no results, so I changed to D. Hooked Durham Ranger, the small one on which I had killed my fish another saturday. He came boldly at it, and after some spirited play, young Jones gaffed a lovely fish for me quite fresh run. He had nearly swallowed my fly. The rest of the day was without incident, though I tried it right up to the Falls: but I did move "something larger" in my favourite "gut" pool (Tyddyn y gladys[sic]) [hwn wedi ei ysgrifennu uwchben]. I walked home across the hill, carrying my fish. Mawddach. Salmon 1.8 lbs [tanlinellwyd] small d. Hooked Durham Ranger Dolgoed Pool

Tuesday, June 13 The weather looked unsettled this morning, and I was out before breakfast on the Wnion, and I tried both the Ford pool and Llyn y [Foutin] with small flies, but did not see a sewin. Into breakfast at 9: afterwards I started over the hill to the Mawddach and commenced fishing at Gelligemlyn: the river was low, but I expected a fish or two at the head of the pools, but I did not rise one, until I came to the Tyn y groes lower pool, Where I hooked what I think, was a large fish, however he was off in no time. Meanwhile rain had been coming down very heavily and as I was nearly wet through (having stupidly started without my mackintosh) I determined to give it up for the day, knowing full well that a heavy flood would come down, and I had neither hooks nor worms. I had my lunch before starting, and walked home quick, and went in to change, and sallied forth again about 4 enveloped in mackintosh, which was necessary, as the rain came down in torrents. Of course the rivers rose rapidly, but nevertheless it is odd I did not come across a single sewin, and trout would not bite. I tried Dolgun as well is up to the Ford Pool. A very heavy flood tonight. Wnion (Trout 3)

Wednesday, June 14. I had breakfast at 6:30, and with William Roberts made an early start to the Mawddach across the hill. I commenced fishing at 8.20 at Llyn Coch, with a worm, but soon changed to fly, and at the tail end of this pool, I cooked a nice little fresh run sewin. I fished up to Bryn cemlyn, but did nothing except rise a sewin or two, and had particular bad luck at the Tyn y groes pool, as I lost two sewin there, and rose a third. I started up to the upper water, knowing full well that it would be in excellent order, and I began at the Rock bu did not move a fish here or at the first Long Pool in the Wood, where it now being 12 o`clock I sat down for 20 minutes and had a bit of lunch. I went on up to the to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] Pool, and at the lower part of it, I saw something break the water at my fly, a DH Durham Ranger, William Roberts saw the fish and thought it about 8lbs. Again I tried him, and he rose beautifully at the fly, but missed it. I now changed to a large DH Jack Scott`s, and meanwhile the fish rose to himself, which indicated to me to a nicety where to "put" the fly, and I had the fish firm and fast. He was a strong fish, and gave me some exciting sport, but in about half an hour, I have the satisfaction of gaffing a fresh run salmon of of 10lbs. I went on up, and fished the Minor`s pool blank, but at the tail end of the top pool below the Falls, I had the luck to stick in another good fish, though not quite so fresh as the first, but he was 11lb: and was hooked firmly on a DH Durham ranger. William Roberts landed him cleverly in the net. I had now not much more time, and I ended up with one more try at the First Long Pool in the Wood: but without results. It took down my rod with much regret, it being now three: and had a care to meet one at Tyn y groes: and I was soon home after a most enjoyable day`s sport. I left Dolserau this evening by the Mail for town, and the Squire and mother arrived from Aberyswyth [Aberystwyth sic] in the phaeton, whence they had driven, in good time to see me off. Mawddach Salmon 1 11lbs First Pool below the Falls. DH Durham ranger. Salmon 1 10lbs Tyddyn y Gladys Pool DH Jock Scott`s. Sea trout 1 (1lb)

Thursday, July 13 [1882] ...Reached home at six, and as the Wnion was in flood I took my rod out for an hour or so before dinner which I had at 8:30. I went to the Ford Pool, which I tried first with worm then with fly, and I captured a nice sewin at the tail end of it with the "Claret and Joy. I went up to Llyn Coch, but it was rather too high, and I then returned home to dinner. Wnion. Seatrout 1 (2 1/2lbs.)

Friday, July 14 I made a start to the Mawddach soon after 8 this morning, driving up to Pen y Bont and of course I went up above towards "the Falls". The river was in high [fly? ply?] and too discoloured - in fact a bad colour for fly - I rose a nice fish in Tyddyn y Gadlys and it was the only fish I met up above. I went to latterly below the "Meeting of the Waters", and I met with Willie Griffith at the Dolcoed [sic.] Pool, and he had finished up with some success as he had 4 sewin. I tried the Railings Pool, and here caught my only fish – a nice sewin of 2 pounds. I went down to Gethigemlin [sic.] and there met Major Biknill, who had done nothing. Heavy rain came on and they went to Tyn y groes, staying there the night, as also did Griffith, and we dined together at 8:30. Mawddach Seatrout 1 (2lbs)

Saturday, July 15, 1882 Rain fell most of the night, and the river was rather higher than yesterday. I went up the river, as Griffiths decided to go down. The water was too high for any of the upper water [sic. ???], and I tried with a worm by the Meeting of the Waters, and went up to the first Long Pool in the Wood where I waited and had my lunch, and the river fell considerably. I fished however all the other pools blank, and I did nothing until I came below junction again and I captured a sea trout of 2 1/2 lbs in the river below the Meeting of the Waters but it was an ugly fish in poor condition [but...condition wedi ei groesi allan]. Williams of Tyn y groes drove me home, and Mother, Nelly and the Squire arrived this evening from Birmingham Mawddach. Sea trout 1 (2 1/2lbs).

Monday, July 17 I made a start to the Mawddach about 8 o`clock walking over with William Roberts. The river was not at all high, but in good order and colour, but as more rain came on in the afternoon, there is no doubt it rose a little. I began well, catching the sewin of 2 1/2lbs at Bryn cemlyn Pool, 2lbs at Tyn y groes run, and another 2 1/2lbs at Llyn Coch. I also touched two or three others. I lunched at the Meeting of the Waters, and then went up and fished to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] , and from the top pools down to Tyddyn y Gladys, and here I hooked a good fish in one of the swirls, which gave me considerable trouble in the dry channels of the pool, but the fish was well hooked, and I did not want to take him down in case of disturbing the lower portion of the pool, and with patience I got him into the net. The fly was a new pattern - yellow red blue body pigswool wing, Mallard and jungle cock feather, Hackle Blue. I tried the first Long Pool in the wood, and it being then 5.30 I went home very content with my day`s sport. Mawddach, Salmon 1 9 1/2 lbs. Tuesday, July 18 I went over to the river again driving to Tyn y groes, and they went up and commenced at the railings, where I tracked a good sewin, and at Dolcoed [sic. Dolgoed] Pool I rose a nice grilse twice near the head of the Channel, and there is no doubt the fish saw me rising so close to me. I met Kinsey and as he told me the Barmouth Fisherman Proudley was fishing above me with worm. I walked up above Cwm y Avon [sic. Cwm yr Afon] but did not stir a single fish, and it was not until I came down below the junction, that I hooked a fish – 4 lb grilse in the lower portion of the Meeting of the Waters and ugly fish in poor condition. Fly dark Scotch, Fly Mallard Wing. The Squire and mother met me in the phaeton, and Nelly rode over, and we had a tremendous ducking going home. Went to the Mawddach, and found that Willie Griffith and a friend were fishing below Tyn y groes, so I went down to the Heather Pool, Bryncemlyn: and I lost two small Sewin there. I did nothing above, except losing a nice sewin in one of the Glen yr avon holes, after playing it almost into the net. Thursday, July 20 I got up early, and began fishing on the Wnion at 7. The Wnion was high and a very light colour, and I did not expect to do much. Before coming into breakfast I fished from Pughs Farm to Dolgun, and only got one sewin a small fish at Dolgun: and I lost another. After breakfast I fished up from Pughs Farm and went up to the viaduct, but I only met one sewin. I had to walk home very quickly, as I left this afternoon for Shrewsbury to attend the Assizes, the Commission being opened there today. I reached Shrewsbury about six: and dined at Megs [?] at seven. The business at Shrewsbury was unusually heavy – 16 Causes in the Cause List, and about 18 prisoners for trial. I stayed at Shrewsbury a week, and returned home on Thursday July 27. Wnion Sea trout 1 and some Brown trout.

Thursday, July 27 I slept at Bala last night, having left Shrewsbury at 6 o`clock. I left Bala at 7:45 and reach home for breakfast. I thought it was going to be a fine day, but it became very unsettled again. I wanted to give Roc some exercise, and was also anxious to see what grouse there were, so I walked over Caerynwch moor to Caeafon over Penantigi mountain. I put up a small covey on Caerynwch, and did not beat it at all. When I got on to Maesygamdda, the weather looked threatening, so I ate my lunch quickly, and took a beat up and down the best portion of Maesglassy and saw two coveys but the birds were very small. Roc was very steady, and found all the birds I saw. A heavy mist came on, so I hurried down to Penantigi, and had a wet walk home, calling at Perthi to ask William Roberts to come down tomorrow. Reached home about 4.30....

Friday, July 28 A fine morning, but heavy rain during the day, and it was very close. I went over to Tyn y Groes, and Percy Noble accompanied me. Stupidly forgot landing net or gaff, so William Roberts went back for it in the trap and walked over the hill and joined us at Tyddyn y gladys soon after one: however I never had need to use it. Began at the Railings, but I lost two small sewin, and they caught one at the Meeting of the Waters. Went up but did not stir a fish until I came to the second pool below the Falls which I fished with Jock Scots down, and whipping back I rose a fine salmon, which however I failed to move again. I rose one or two sewin and it was a regular unlucky day for me. The rain was very heavy in the N: and both the Eden and Cemlyn came down heavy, and I am sorry now that I did not stay below. Saturday, July 29, 1882 I was up very early and went out on the river, which was in good order for small flies. I began at the Ford, and seeing the cormorant, I took the trouble to go back and get a gun, but on returning, I did not see the bird, and it must have gone up to the Big Pool. I came in to breakfast and went out again afterwards and fished up to Bont Newydd: and had some good sport with the trout, killing 26 and a small sewin. I rose several sewin, one or two at the crooked Pool and a very good one at Fronwion. Home about 2.30, and we played lawn tennis all the afternoon, the weather being perfect, very sunny and clear, too fine to last. After tennis, I went up to the Big Pool and had a very nice bathe. A nice breeze was blowing during the morning, and we picked up some nice trout, but lost several in the weeds, and the best one I lost by not having the landing net in the boat. At 1:30 the others came up with the lunch, and I`ve had a very pleasant picnic, that we only just escaped the rain. We could not do any good on the Lake in the afternoon, so we went down to the river, and I tried a few pools for Sewin without success, but I came in early, as the Selfs left for Myn[sic]-y-don at 5.30, and I wished to see them off.

The others had gone to Barmouth, and returned at 4, and I had some very good lawn tennis.....

Friday, August 4 A nice day. Wind NW and fresh. M`Micking and I walked up to the Big Pool to bathe, and it was very nice. After breakfast at 9:30 he and I went out for a walk with Roc to give him a run. We went up the Torrent Walk and across Caerynwch to Cefn Isa where we found two good coveys of birds all strong. One covey had 11 birds in it. We lunched before beating Coedmaeswglog, and here we found 4 coveys, but none of them very large . Roc worked very well, especially in the afternoon. We walked home along the road, and got back about 4.30 and played lawn tennis with Flo Fletcher and Nellie. The Cyprian Williams arrived from town, and "Peter" also came.

Saturday, August 5 We had arranged to go up Cader today, but they day did not look very promising, as there was a thick mist on the mountain. "Peter" M`Micking and I bathed this morning, and we started in the carriage for Dolgellau about 10, and picked up Mrs Lewis Self there, who came with us. We got three ponies from the Angel, and rode them up to the place we started from beyond Llyn Crogennan. The mist hung very thickly on the hill, and it was not long before we were enveloped in it. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get to the top, where we had some shelter and had a capital lunch. We lost Pugh our guide going down, and it was not difficult to miss the way. The mist rose a little, but we really saw no view the whole day. The Ladies were rather tired after the expedition. It cleared, and became beautifully fine this evening. I went down to the Ford Pool for half an hour before dinner with M`Micking, and I hooked a small sewin there, and tried the "crooked pool" and "Pool in the Hollow" without success.

Monday, August 7 M`Micking and I had breakfast at 6:30 and walked over to Talyllyn; which we reached at 9:30. We were thus enabled to have some fishing before everyone else came over. It seemed a good day, but few trout were rising to the natural: however we rose a few. Peter and Nelly rode over; and the others came in the carriage, we had a most enjoyable picnic. Flo Fletcher came in our boat afterwards to fish, and played a trout most skilfully. I caught a very nice Sea trout, the first time I have ever captured in Talyllyn, but there are a good many in the Lake now, as well as salmon – owing no doubt to the late heavy rains. We left about 6; and got home in time for tea dinner at eight. Talyllyn. Trout 10 Sea trout 1. (1lb 1oz)
