Tuesday, August 8 A very fine and hot today. This morning I went to the Big Pool to bathe, and after breakfast walked down to Dolgelley with M`Micking and attended Petty Sessions, but there were only three cases, so I got back for lunch. This afternoon I took the two setters Tom Negus had lent to me for a run over Coedmaeswglog and I was well pleased with them. I had a longish walk, and was not home until seven....

Wednesday, August 9 A lovely day. I went to the Big Pool this morning to bathe after breakfast M`Micking and I walked up to Llyn Cynwch to Perch fish. The day seemed favourable, however they would not bite at all and I only managed to get four in the afternoon and a nice trout – all on a live minnow. M`Micking left me about 4 o`clock in order to play lawn tennis, but I stayed up until 6.30 . Llyn Cynwch. Trout 1. Perch 4

Thursday, August 10 This morning I went up by the 10.40 train to Llanuwchllyn with the setters and William Roberts intending to take them over to Llaynmaddwy [sic. Llanymawddwy] over Bwlch y Groes. M`Micking left by the same train to go North. It was a very hot day, and there was no scent. I got onto the top of Bwlch y groes and beat the best part of it all the way down, but birds were apparently scarse. I sent Roberts down to [Llanymawddwy], and took the dogs over Pant and Pengelli; but saw no birds at all. I reached the Sun Tun Llanymawddwy [sic] at 6; where I was made very comfortable.

Friday, August 11 A fine day. I went out this morning and had a bathe in the river, and then came into breakfast. Afterwards I went to Bryn to see Dr Roberts about the Wern Goch and [Wern Lidyau] shooting, and I was with him some time. I then walked up on to Llwyngwilim and met Hugh watching [?], and I had my lunch there, and sat there till 4, when I returned and went on the road to meet "Peter" and Lewis Self, who had driven over from Dolserau. We had an early dinner and to bed early in anticipation of tomorrow.

Saturday, August 12, 1882 We got up at 2.30 had breakfast at 3, and made a start at 3:30: and it was fine and pleasant to go up to Llwyngwilm [sic Llwyngwilym]. It was light enough to shoot at 4:30 and we had the hill all to ourselves, but two watchers of Sir Edmunds` came up about 7 o`clock, but did not interfere with us. Birds with very scarse [sic], and one covey consisted of cheepers. We worked hard until 9, when our food came up and we rested, and afterwards went on to Pengelli and Pant. "Peter" left us to go home, and we went to over Pant, but saw very few birds, and we did not increase our bag, which was made on Llwyngwilm. Lewis Self and I came home by the road, and were in about 3. A bathe in the river refreshed us much: and we did full justice to our dinner: to bed early. A nicer a day for shooting could not have been imagined, but birds awfully scarce. Llwyngwilm. Grouse 7 - various (a stoat) 1

Monday, August 14 Breakfast at 9:30 and our plans were to shoot Coedmaeswglog as I expected Tom [ ] Price at midday, and it would be convenient for him to meet us. The weather however proved most unkind and that combined with the fact that Charles Owen killed 10 brace of grouse on Coed and Gelli on the 12th spoilt our day. We did see some nice coveys, but they were wild, and impossible to approach. Gwen Price joined us at 1:30 with the lunch, and afterwards we took a beat over Cefn Issa [sic]. but the weather soon drove us home again wet through. Richie was with this.

Tuesday, August 15 A wet morning, and all hopes of going to Llanymawddwy were abandoned, so Gwen Price and I went to the river which of course was in order. It rose suddenly as we commenced fishing, and came down dirty, so we tried below Tyn y Groes with worm, but the sewin biting very badly, and although I hooked several, I only got one small one, as did Tommy. We lunched at the "Meeting of the Waters", and as it cleared I determined to go up to the Falls, while Tommy fished down to Tyn y Groes. I found the river too high, and showers kept it up. I did not rise a fish, but killed a sewin 2 1/2 pounds at Tyddyn y Gladys Pool. Douglas Williams caught a nice little grilse at the "Ford Pool" on worm. Mawddach. Sea trout 3 (1) 2 1/2 pounds. Wnion. Thursday, August 16 i. A showery day so we again went to the river, though it eventually turned out a beautiful day, with bright sun. I went up above, while [Juen? sic Iwan Ieuan?] Price with William Roberts, fished below for sewin. I did not meet a fish until the 1st Long Pool in the Wood, at the top of which I rose a nice salmon to a small Durham Ranger, but he would not come second time although I tried him hard. I met another rather nice fish at the top pool, but he was similarly sulkily disposed. I did not join [ ] Price until 3.30 for lunch we had at the Railings Pool. He had met several sewin, and also moved a salmon at [Concelius`s] pool, but had not a fish, so the day turned out blank. I heard though that Harry Lee did well with minnow. Thursday, August 17 at last we had a nice day for shooting, and we made an early start at 8:30 driving to Bont Llyn Rhiddyn, and walking up to Wein Camddwr [sic Waun Camddwr] from there. We beat this ground, Wern Goch and Wein Ludgan [sic] and ended up on Bwlch y groes: consequently we had a very stiff walk. We found a small lot on Wein Camddwr, and Juen Price accounted well for them. On Wern Goch, which I beat before lunch there were also a few birds, but one lot were "cheepers". We lunched before going on to Wein Ludgan, and here birds were scarse [sic], but we accounted well for those we saw. Sir Edmunds watcher came up to us before we crossed to Bwlch y groes: but only asked for the card, which he got. We had a very stiff climb onto Bwlch y groes, where I accounted for 3 birds out of 4 shots. We descended to Llanymawddwy by the road, and found a trap with our clothes &c had arrived. A bathe in the river much refreshed us, and we dined early at seven Wein Camddwr, Wern Goch, Wein Ludgan, Bwlch y groes (lower part) Grouse 14 4 of which were "cheepers".

Friday, August 18 Juen Price and I bathed this morning, and we had breakfast at 8:30. Lewis Self was unwell today, and although he came up with us to Llwyngwilym, he returned immediately, but was able to join us after lunch on the pony . I lovely day for both walking and shooting. I beat Llwyngwilym very carefully, and we accounted for most of the birds we saw. Lord Powis, or a party of his was shooting on the adjoining moor, but they did not send us many birds. After lunch, which we had at one, we went to Pengelli and saw two small lots, Juen Price getting one: but the birds were wild. On Pant we did nothing. We reached Llanymawddy [sic Llanymawddwy] about 5.30, and Juen Price and I had a delicious bathe in the river. We had music this evening. Llwyngwilym, Pengelli &Pant Guns 2. Grouse 9.

Saturday, August 19 We had breakfast soon after 7, and it was a wet morning, which stopped us bathing. We left Llanymawddy [sic Llanymawddwy] soon after 8, and Lewis Self and Juen Price dropped me at Tyncelyn, and went home in the trap, as they both had to leave today. I went up to Caeafon, and was on my ground at 10. A splendid scenting day and a grand day for walking of which I had plenty. I found a few birds of course some cheepers, too small to shoot, but one very good covey too wild to get near, and they went to the rocks. Old Will, the watcher came up and I heard that the Buckleys had been here on Wednesday, and killed 7 grouse. I picked up 3 1/2 brace, one being a cheeper which "Puck" unfortunately caught. I went over [Wnion?], and then down to Caerynwch moor and I found two coveys here, one a splendid lot of birds, but my dogs were jacked up. I killed a brace and a half and then went home, getting in about 5.30. "Puck" and "Pilot" the two black and white setters, which Tom Negus had lent me, worked splendidly, as they have done all the week, and I found them invaluable. "Rock" was out of form, and I did not have him out today. Caeafon and Gwanas. Grouse 9. One gun

Monday, August 21 It was very showery and unsettled this morning. Ritchie who was to have shot with me today did not turn up so I started off to Drws y nant alone with William Roberts and the two setters to shoot Cae coch. I went up by train. It was not a favourable day but the dogs worked carefully, and found the few birds I saw, well. The best covey got up wild, and I did not get a shot at it, and never saw it a second time. I killed 8 grouse out of nine shots, but I lost one bird over some high cliffs, which we looked for in vain, but it fell over a very rough place near the stream. I went back by the 5 o`clock train which was late. On reaching home, I tried the river a bit with small flies, but did not see a sewin. Cae coch Grouse 7. One gun.

Tuesday, August 22, 1882 I walked up to Caerynwch this morning, and met Ritchie there, and he and I went out shooting together. We began on Gwanas, but were unlucky in finding birds. Rain came on in the afternoon, and although a beat Cefn Issa, and part of Gelli, we had to stop immediately after lunch, and only had one bird, an old cock shot on Cefn Issa. We had a wet walk home, and rain came on very heavily. Gwanas to Coedmaeswglog Grouse 1 Stopped by rain

Wednesday 23rd August 1882 It was very stormy this morning, and after breakfast at 7:30 I started over to Tyn y groes to stay there for the night. I found the water high, but not very dirty. I tried with worm at first in the lower pools, but the sewin were not biting well. I also tried minnow, and then went down to get to Gethigemlyn [sic] and the Poachers Rock Pool with fly, but only caught one small sewin. I returned to Bryncemlyn Pool and lunched there, and afterwards went up to the upper Water as the river had fallen sufficiently. I did nothing until I went to the top Pool before the Falls, and here I hooked a nice fish on the "Stevenson" 3lbs. I tried to then the Gadlys on my way down, and firmly hooked another nice fish which gave me some trouble in landing; It was a nice coloured fish and took the same fly, I tried the "1st Long Pool in the Wood", and some others, and reached Tyn y groes about 7.15 well pleased with my day. It was showery and cold from NW. Mawddach. Salmon 1-8lbs "Stevenson" Salmon 1-7 [three quarters]lbs "Stevenson" Sewin 5 (small)

Tuesday, August 24 Had breakfast at 7, and it came over very wet indeed, and a fresh flood came down the river this morning, so worm fishing was the order of the day. I went up first to the "Meeting of the Waters", but only got one sewin there - above - which unfortunately jumped into the water again off the bank. I returned below Tynygroes and from 11 until 3 o`clock when I had to shut up, the sewin took well. I lost a large fish at the tail end of the Heather Pool by the hook [drawing?] from the gut. I killed some nice fish in the "Rocks" but did best at the Heather Bryncemlyn pool. I had to stop at 3 o`clock in order to return home to pack my things, as I started to Scotland by the mail this evening. Mawddach: Sewin 14 (1) 2 1/2 lbs. (1) 2 1/4 lbs. (2) 2 lbs. (1) 1 3/4 lbs &c. Friday, September 29 Michaelmas Day... Saturday, September 30 I reached home [o`r Alban] soon after 12, and had some lunch at one o`clock. I hardly knew what to do in the afternoon as it was raining, and the river was low. I started out with my gun and "Rock" on Gwanas, but as soon as I reached the moor I could hardly stand or see from the rain so I returned and went out with my trout rod, and as the Clwyedog [sic.] came down in flood I fished it with worm and down Dolgun. I hooked and lost a sewin at Dolgun. It was very stormy and wet this evening: but the Wnion did not come down until after dark. Clwyedog [sic. Clywedog] and Wnion trout 9

On the lower part of the Bwlch I found plenty of birds, but they were wild. I killed one over Rock, and stalked another. I mulled [sic] one bird, by trying to pot him on the ground. Saturday, October 7 The weather was very stormy this morning, and when I got to Weun Lugga [sic] a dense mist with the rain came on from the East, and I soon found it quite hopeless to attempt to beat the ground, so William and I made tracks as best we could over Drws Bach, and this we had some difficulty in doing, and we missed our way down to [Weun Camddwr], so I struck towards Coedmaeswglog, which we reached at 12:30. I ought to have had an old Cock grouse before lunch time, which I had in pouring rain: but it soon cleared, and turned out a nice afternoon. I ought to have had a brace of birds, but I was rather too fagged for straight powder. I killed a nice Leveret on Coedmaeswglog, and saw two others: a nice lot of birds also on the Cefn Issa Rocks. I reached Bont Rhiadyr [sic. Rhaeadr] at 5:30 when Morher met me with the trap. I was glad to get Home, after a not very successful expedition. Oddly enough it was beautifully fine all day at Dolserau. Coedmaeswglog. Hare 1 Richie killed 1 Partridge 1 Snipe in September
