The New Year came in like a Lion: heavy rain with South westerly gale all day. ...with Hide and Tip [dogs] I set out at 10.30 and tried for Snipe ... over Caerynwch hill Gwanas and to the Iron Mines in search of them.. Saw 5 snipe, killing 3, two Jacks and one "Jill". Hide caught a hare which however I did not kill, not wishing to burden myself with it, and it went away none the worse.... home soon after 4, I was walking the whole time. Good Friday. Another very cold day, with snow showers. I went up to Llyn Cynwch ... This afternoon the Squire drove ... to Barmouth and we had a lovely drive, it being beautifully fine. and the mountains covered with snow looked very grand. We did not feel the wind coming back as much as we expected, as it had gone down a good deal.

We had breakfast at 8 and in pouring rain started over to Tyn-y-groes to fish above the Falls and we drove to Glan Eden and walked up from there, and began fishing at 10.45. The river as very high and full of snow water, and these circumstances combined spoilt our morning, and it was not easy to find pools to fish in. Worming[?] was the order of the day, and we went almost as far Pont Aber gwin[?], and I killed 24 trout and Douglas 6; but ... the larger ones were in poor condition. We left over fishing at 4.30... Mawddach (above Falls) C.M.E. Trout 24. D.W.W Trout 6.

A lovely day. Wind W.N.W., and bright and sunny all day. ... breakfast at 8, ... to Pont aber-gwin, to fish down. I walked over in n hour and forty minutes, and expected a god day, but I was bitterly disappointed, .. the trout would not look at a fly especially at the top. The river looked in nice order, but there were still some unmistakeable signs of "snow brae" in it still...Douglas Williams fished the Wnion, but found it no good. Mawddach (above Falls) trout 8.

..breakfast at 8, and started up to Llyn Cynwch. It was bright and fine, but the wind was cold. Few fish rising, and I only got three, Douglas one. I had the misfortune to fall into the Lake as I was wading, and got very wet, but stupidly did not go straight home. I suffered in consequence, and on my return home was seized with severe spasms, and was too ill to leave for Town this evening as intended. C.E.M. Llyn Cynwch Trout 3. D.W. Trout 1 = 4.

I was well enough today to get out, and the weather today was simply charming - bright and warm.I strolled up to Llyn Cynwch, and fished from 12 until 5. in the boat. The wind was changeable but some nice fish were rising. I caught five, one nearly a lb. The fish stopped rising late in the afternoon, though I lost three running just before I gave up. Home by 6.15. Llyn Cynwch. Trout 5 (1) 14oz.

A fine day, wind at first W. then W.N.W. and latterly N. East. It was more unsettled, but when I reached Llyn Cynwch this morning about 11 o`clock, it was warm, and lots of flies were on the water. I fished from the boat, and under the bushes had remarkable bad luck, as I lost three or four nice fish, but got one about 3/4 lb. ... In the afternoon the wind changed, and the fish immediately ceased rising: as the breeze was fresh I fished from the shore, and had great difficulty in catching the five trout I did. They were small. I fished until 5.45 and then went home. Weather clear again this evening, with a red sunset. Llyn Cynwch Trout 9. (1) 12oz.

I had breakfast at 8, and went up to Llyn Cynwch this morning, but I had not been fishing long when Col Birchall came up, and he caught six trout in a very short time. The lake was so low that I could wade under the bushes, so that the boat was not of much use. A nice breeze blowing, but the wind was very cold and squally latterly from the N.E, and hail and snow showers fell, and there was snow on the mountains. I left for Pwll-y-gellau at 4, and caught two trout, but they were small. The lake was very low. My fish from Llyn Cynwch were also small. Llyn Cynwch. trout 7. Pwlth [Pwll]-y-gellau. trout 2

.. went on to Llyn Cynwch. I had settled to go with Col Birchall to Ta?ingllyn, but the weather was so squally, I gave it up. I did not stay long at Llyn Cynwch, as Osbourn Williams and another man came up to fish, and I returned home to lunch with only one small trout. Major O`Callaghan had arrived, and this afternoon we fished the river. He went down to Dolgun, while I fished from our bridge up to the viaduct, and did fairly well. Trout - 1 Llyn Cynwch. It was a mild rainy day with S.W.wind. We drove up the river and each went to a stream on the hills. Major O`Callaghan going to the Drws-y-nant stream, while I went to the Benglog stream. I began in the wood with worm, and caught five very nice trout, but it was very difficult fishing. I then went out of the wood and began with fly but the wind was so strong it made fishing very difficult, and I lost a great many fish in consequence. I fished up to the top, and then ocoped [looped?] the moor to another small stream which tried down to Drws-y-nant, but I only got two or three small trout out of it. i met the Majoron the river near Drws-y-nant, and he could do nothing up the stream, but got nine in the river. We drove home from Drws-y-nant.

Whit Monday. A lovely day for fishing. Wind S.W. and bright ...we began fishing [the Mawddach] about 11 o`clock. The trout were taking very short indeed, otherwise we should have done very well indeed. We took most of our fish outside the wood, and they seemed to be quite off later in the afternoon. A fine day, and very warm. Wind S. I went down to Petty Sessions this morning but there was not much business. ... we walked up to Pwll-y-gellau, where I had had the boat taken from Llyn Cynwch. We had a very pleasant afternoons sport. but I was singularly unlucky in losing some very nice fish. Major O`C caught the lions share, and .. got his best fish off the shore. The breeze was very light, and the sun bright. The olive dun was the best fly and we caught several on the Coch-y-bondkin [?]... Pwll-y-gellau Trout 18 and we returned, Trout 13. Largest 3/4lb. Wnion Trout 7.

A lovely day, but the wind was Easterly. O`C and I made an early start in the pony trap to Tyn y groes, and from thence went up the Cemlyn. In the top flat pool, O`C caught a very nice fish of nearly 3/4 lb, but we could only catch a few small trout besides, so we started up to Llyn Abbw, and had a very hot walk up there, but I immediately went on over to Llyn P??feddw [?] and expected to get some sport, but no fish were rising at all, so I left about 3 o`clock, and on reaching Llyn Abbw, I found that O`C had gone down to the river so I followed after taking a few fruitless casts in Llyn Abbw, he could do very little on the river, and consequently had a poor day: we were however home in good time. Met Col Birchall at Tyn y groes, who told me he had seen a salmon higher up in the river... Wynne, Alan Stokes and Jenkinson tried Pwllgellau and did not do well.

A fine and bright day. Wind N.W and rather cold. Jenkinson and I went to Arthog by the 9.10 train and up to Llyn Crogennau. ... the keeper of Tyn y coed came with us .. with the key of the boat house, and we were thus able to get the boat. The fish were rising very well this morning and I picked up a good many - one being 1/2 lb. ...and as they went over to the little lake , I went there and fished from the shore and caught ten trout. I returned to the large lake and we found the trout rising better towards evening, and just stopped short of 50, when we were obliged to leave in order to catch the train ... Wynne and O`C had a capital day up the Drws y nant stream and the Afon Wen (Cae Coch) stream killing 75, and one fish was nearly 1 lb. The best fish were caught up the Drws y nant stream. Jenkinson & C.M.E. Llyn Crogennau Trout 49. W.E and Major O`C Drws y nant Stream, Cae Coch Streams Trout 75. = 124

A dull cloudy day. Wind N.W. and rather cold. ... went up to llyn Cynwch , but could do nothing, and I only got two small trout. Major O`C and Wynne went to Pwllgellau [Pwll-y-gele], and found the trout rising to the natural, but could do nothing at first, until they put on the quill gnat [flies?] when they picked up twenty trout in the Lake, but none were over 1/2 lb. They also tried the river, and caught a few trout in it. ... Llyn Cynwch Trout 2. Pwll gellau [Pwll-y-gele] trout 20.
