Weather very unsettled, with heavy rain in the afternoon. After eleven o`clock breakfast, I went out with my rod until lunchtime; and tried for Sewin (sea trout) with small flies, but could do nothing, only rising two.... went out again after lunch, when it rained very heavily. I caught one sewin with worm at the top of the Big Pool. The river then came down in flood, and I went to Dolgun where I caught three sewin ...Wynne tried the Fad [?], and joined me at Dolgun, he also had three sewin, and had during the early part of the day very good sport at Pwllgelli ... killing 16 nice trout the pool being very full of water after the rain. Showery this morning, but it became beautifully fine afterwards. We were going a picnicon the coach to Mochras Bay, but the weather looked so unsettled we gave it up, so i started across the hill to the mawddach at 8.30, William Roberts coming over with my lunch, and he met me at Tyddyn-y-gladys, just before I hooked a very heavy fish there ... [blow by blow account of `exciting struggle`] ... [Summary] Mawddach Lost a large salmon, supposed to be 18 to 20 lbs in Tyddyn-y-gladys after two hours play - Wynne fished Pwllgelli and the river, and killed a dozen trout in Pwllgelli

The first day of grouse shooting ushered in with a fine morning but windy. ... drove up in a car to Bont Rhiadyr, and walked up to Coedmaeswglog. I could not go on Gelligra?og, which of course made all the difference. We made a bad beginning by failing to get a bird out of a nice covey which Roc [dog] stood well to: but I picked up a brace out of this lot afterwards. ... We went on to Cefn I?sa - and found a few birds, but very wild: and were unlucky with one lot. [Lunch details] We had good sport on Caerynwch moor, and found two good coveys, but rain coming on we stopped shooting and went home. ?ally Allen, Ritchie and I carried guns. The bag was: Coedmaeswglog: Guns 3

... went up to the Falls, and began at the "first Long Pool in the Wood," which I fished ... Went up to the two top pools, but fished both blank, and then tried a worm without success. I changed my Durham Ranger to a double hooked Stevenson: and tried the second pool below the Falls and hooked a nice fish which took my fly well under the water. Percy Gye came up and gaffed the fish for me after 15 minutes play. It was a clean long shaped fish, which turned out to be 14 lbs. We tried hard for another, as this fish I caught about one o`clock, but Percy Gye alone met a fish which he rose twice in the Miners Bridge Pool. We met Fisher who had fished up blank. I tried below the meeting of the Waters but id not see a fish.

Heavy rain fell this morning... drove up to Aber Eden intending to fish the Falls , but the river rose rapidly, and I was obliged to begin with worm - which I did at the run below the 1st long pool in the wood, when I caught a good sewin [sea trout]. Percy Gye went up to wait for the water to get in order for fly, and I fished down with worm, but had little sport until I went below the Meeting of the Waters. I killed two fine fish at the tail end of the "Upper Bryn??ly? pool", and at 5 tried a fly at the tail end of "Lower Bryncelyn pool and hooked a large fish. Ended up at Gethigemlyn pool, but found Harry Lee fishing with minnow from the other side. Percy Gye killed a nice Sewin [sea trout] of 2lb 10oz at the tail end of the 1st Long pool in the Wood, the only fish he saw. The river though was too high and discoloured for the Upper Waters. ... walked up to the Caerynwch in order to shoot, but the weather was so misty and wet we gave it up, and returned home about 12. Mrs Gye, Fisher and I went out on the river, which was in very fair order for small flies, but I joined Mrs Gye at the Ford Pool without having met a fish. She stayed to lunch with me, and it being so wet she returned home, and I went up the river, and at the run below Pugh`s Farm hooked a good fish on a small red bodied fly ribbed with gold tinsel and Mallard Wing. The fish - a nice grilse [1yr old salmon] broke me in the rough water after I had tried to stop him going to the root of a tree. After this disaster I fished up to the Helygog Pools, but did not see another fish. In fact, they were very sulky. It drizzled all day, and was very misty but this had no appreciable difference to the river, which fell all day.

A lovely day.... we started out to shoot. The weather was perfect for it ... We began by finding a bird I had shot on Monday which we could not find on that day as I was positive I had dropped three out of the covey. We found two splendid coveys, and had some luck with them, which was owing to fairly good shooting. We stayed on the river until one o`clock ... and then went on to Cefn Ifsa, and Coedmaeswglog, but had a long walk and little sport as I only killed a brace, Ritchie failing to score ... A lovely day. I was out on the river at half past seven and tried for a sewin, but could not get one. After breakfast ... strolled up to Pwlchgelli [details of party] for a picnic. It was very little use fishing as there was hardly any breeze at all. I killed one trout about 1/2 lb, and we had two others smaller. This afternoon I walked up to Bontnewydd and began fishing just above the bridge, and I caught a small sewin immediately. I fished some way up but could catch nothing except catch a few small trout. It came over very gloomy and slight rain fell ... fished homewards. Percy and Mrs Gye did nothing after I left them at Pwlchgelli. Pwlchgelli trout 3. Wnion. Sea trout 1. Brown trout 16.

I went into Dolgelley this morning to attend Petty Sessions and the General annual licensing Meeting. I was home to lunch at 2 o`clock, and afterwards Mrs Gye and I walked up to Pwlchgelli in the hopes of getting some trout, but although there was a breeze, the trout were not rising and we returned home at seven o`clock blank. Percy Gye stayed at home and ferreted with Charlie ???? and they got five couple of rabbits.

A very fine day. Percy Gye and i drove up to Coedmaeswglog and began shooting on that hill. we found a nice covey, but did not have a point at it, and he only got one bird out of it. Another covey got up very wild and we found several lots at Gelli, which of course we could not shoot at. but we drove two lots to the Cefn Ifsa rocks, but we never got on terms with them. We lunched above Cefn Ifsa and found a small covey on the top flat of Cefn Ifsa out of which we got 2 birds. We came home acrofs [across] Caerynwch moor, where we got a brace of birds, but we did not beat it. We had a very pleasant walk. Coedmaeswglog to Caerynwch moor Grouse 7. Snipe 1 Landrail 1. Guns 2

I hurt my heel yesterday jumping off a stone wall, so was rather lame. I went into Dolgelley by coach and went on an engine to Penmaenpool, and walked up to Garthyngla?d, Sir Richard wyatts, to fish in Jericho pool. I found the Mifs Wyatts and Louis Jelf fishing when I got there at 11 o`clock but sport was most poor; the pool being very weedy, and we had to fish from a b?tho? and small punt. we went to lunch at 1.30, and tried the perch again in the evening, but we only got 8 perch and 5 eels. I stayed the night at Garth.

A lovely day with hot sun. ... had a lovely walk up the "Gubbein" [?] from the top of which we had a wonderful view of the estuary and Cader. I stayed at Garth until 5 o`clock, when Sir Richard Wyatt drove me down to Dolgelley to meet the coach. My heel was much better, thanks to Ellimans Embrocation.

A lovely day, hot and hazy. ...at 10 o`clock walked up to Caerynwch ... started out to shoot over Caerynwch moor. Birds were not easy to find, and it was very possible that they had been disturbed by some men cutting rushes. we could not find the big covey, and only came across six birds, two brace of which we shot. we also flushed four snipe. We lunched at one o`clock, and beat the top part of the Moch afterwards, but we could not find the birds, and were home before 3 o`clock. A good many people came to our lawn tennis party this afternoon. I bathed at the Big pool late this evening...Caerynwch Hill Guns 3 (Half day) Grouse 4.

A very unsettled morning, with slight rain showers. Percy and Mrs Gye went away this morning and I went up with them by the 8.40 train to Drws-y-nant to shoot Cae Coch. Found the birds awfully wild, and began badly as "Roc" [dog] who was very fresh ran into a covey, and I could not get near them after that. I could do nothing, so I started at 2 o` clock to Coed Maeswglog - a long walk I found, and I did no good here and it was not until I reached the open ground beyond the Cefn Ifsa [Issa Isa?] rocks that I had a really good chance, and I killed one bird out of one covey, and a brace out of another. Cefn [to?] Ifsa [Issa] Grouse 3. It cleared up in the afternoon and the wind went down.

I determined to try Cae Coch again. ... I was alone with "Roc". On my way up the hill I put up two Buzzards and shot at one some distance off, but they had no doubt scattered the grouse, as I found every bird I got single: but these were very few. I only fired seven shots, but had some luck in picking up one bird which flew round on the face of the hill. I caught the 4.30 train back to Bont Newydd. A nice fine day, with pleasant breeze. Cae Coch C.M.E. killed Grouse 5.

My 30th Birthday. A little rain had fallen so I went by Coach to the Llanellty Bridge, to see what order the river was in, but the rain had made no perceptible difference. I stayed at the boat house for an hour or so talking to Baileys men, who had netted this morning, and had two very pretty grilse [i year old salmon] of 7lbs and 7 1/2 lbs with sea lice on them, and a brown trout of 2 lbs. I walked home and immediately went out ferreting and with my new ferret did well. killing 14 rabbits and a woodpigeon. The midges were terrible this evening.

A very fine and hot day... 10 o`clock ...went up to Corsyga??dd.. We made a great mistake in going into the brushwood first instead of beating the Cae ?enadd potatoes and oats, consequently before lunch we beat most of the brushwood without seeing partridges, but a good many hares but it was too thick to shoot them, and we had uncommonly bad luck with them. ... I killed a couple of rabbits, but after lunch on Caeheradd we walked into a nice covey of partridges, and also another out of which we got 3 1/2 brace, the shooting in the brushwood being very difficult. We shot until nearly six o`clock and were home before seven after a rather tiring and hot day.
