A very fine and warm day. We all went in the coach this morning, but I got off at Barmouth in order to have a bathe and I took a boat and had a very pleasant swim.... [lift to the station, joined family, journeyed on to the Watkin Williams`s Dolf[?]iog near Beddgelert.] We had some tennis this evening ... but it was rather damp playing owing to the heavy dew.

A lovely day. Went up Cader today with [various people]. I got two good ponies from the Angel. and we started about 11 o`clock. We reached the top at a quarter to two and had a good view of the valleys, but the distant view was spoilt by clouds. A few clouds of mist hung about the moutain, and we had one shower of rain, but were not inconvenienced at all. We started down at 3 o`clock and reached the foot at 5 o`clock, and as I was in a hurry to get home to dress for the Ball this evening Mrs Wilson Noble let me ride the pony into Dolgelley, and I got home soon after six. We dined early and left by the 7.40 for Berwyn Station to go to the Avids Fancy Ball at Llantysilio. The special train returned at 3 o`clock, and we were home by 5 in the morning.

A rainy morning made me decide to go to the Mawddach again... began worm fishing opposite Bryncemlyn, but the wind was so high, it was very difficult... walked up and tried the Miners Bridge Pools and I rose a very fine salmon here, but he would not come again....[detail of broken rod] I hooked a large fish - I think a sewin on the worm. In the afternoon I tried up to the Falls, but only rose one other salmon at the tail of the 1st Long Pool in the Wood, very shy as usual. I gave up at Dolgoch dead beat. Mawddach. Sewin 1.

It was a fine and frosty morning, so I went out at 8 o`clock with my gun and Hide, and beat along the drive where I flushed a Cock Pheasant , but could not get a shot at it. I then went to the small larch plantation, and flushed two if not three woodcock. I only killed a rabbit, and then into breakfast. .. attended Petty Sessions, but the business was light...at one o`clock started out to the small plantation ... I killed a Cock immediately and Wynne and Peter each killed one higher up in the covert, another got away, but I killed one at Werngoch, and we flushed a sixth in the small plantation. Wednesday January 2nd Snow fell during the night, but soon melted - but it was very raw and cold all day. Wind SE started at 9.15 to shoot with the Bicknells at Dolgyfeiliau and Aber Eden. Met them in Dolgellau with Harry Robertson and Galop. We began at Buck`s (the agents) house and beat all round the Big Dolgyfeiliau wood[s?], but we could not find any Cock round the outsides, but I should have had a couple. We skirted the upper portion of the Covert, and beat the larger Camlan wood during the afternoon, but it was not beaten properly. We saw about 9 cock, two only of which were killed - one by Robertson - the other by Bicknell. We did not shoot at pheasants. Returned to Buck`s house where we lunched at 4 o`clock, and the drive home was very dark. Peter ferreted most of the day and killed Rabbits 6 Guns 5 Dolgyfeiliau Aber Eden Woodcock 2

Thursday January 3rd Rain in the night, and it was very mild and showery all day mild. I made an early start with William Roberts, young Pugh and "Tip" for Cock on Coed and Tyddyn. I began badly by missing an easy shot at a rabbit near Dolgun gate: and continued my bad performance by "feathering" a woodcock, which got up in the Coed field, and flew towards the Torrent Walk, and we failed to find it, and I lost some valuable time in endeavouring to do so, but I came across another just below the Caerynwch Lodge, which got up out of the thick holly, and I eventually killed by a long shot, William finding the bird very luckily in Bryn bras. We retraced our steps and went to Trefeilian, and I flushed for Cock out of the thick large plantation killing one, and missing another badly. Another bird got up out of the beech wood near the farm, and I doubt whether we saw this one again. Late in the afternoon i went up to Pensarn farm, but ascertaining from the tenant that there were no Cock about......The hair was killed on Maes yr helmund [sic. Helmau?] farm, and I left it at Tyddyn farm house. I saw one Jack snipe at Coed Marsh. Peter fitted and killed four rabbits out of twelve he bolted, and a magpie. Fortunately the day was fine though it was very threatening this morning. We beat Coxie and Brannos [sic Branas?] beginning just beyond Llanderfel: on the latter beat there was a good show of pheasants and partridges in covert made a nice variety to the sport. Four or five woodcock seen, and Harry Robertson was the fortunate winner of the sweep. killing both the birds. I only shot at one - a very difficult shot. Saturday January 5th I was going to shoot with [W] at Aberartro today, but it was raining so hard this morning that I gave up all idea of going, and started out in pouring rain to Lletyrhys and found a cock, at Wern goch but did not get a shot at it. I crossed the torrent and beat through Maes yr helmand [sic] and Coed to Trefeilian. William Roberts put up a cock in the thick plantation, which I did not see and we could not find again. At Tyddyn I [wiped?] a third one very badly, as it was an easy chance. Got a hen pheasant, and picked up a snipe on my way to the Fron Mines, which I reached in the dark, so could not beat properly. Spring Fishing 1884 Friday April 12th Good Friday I arrived from [Brighton?] last night. Weather very fine, with frost in the morning but the wind was NW with bright sun all day. I commenced fishing this morning about half past nine on the Wnion at Dolgun and fished up. I did not do much at first, but the trout came on to rise well in the middle of the day, and I caught some nice fish. Between Dolserau and Bontnewydd I did not do so well, as someone was fishing in front of me. I went up nearly as far as Bont Llyn Rhidyr [sic]. Saturday April 12th A cold and bright day. Wind NE, and not a very promising day for fishing. I walked up to Llyn Cynwch this morning and began fishing soon after ten o`clock. Few fish were rising, not any fly on the water. I rose a few though, and lost one nice fish and several smaller. I tried hard until half past three, when I went to Pwll Gelli [sic Pwll y Gele?]; and found a nice breeze on the pool, and more water than I expected, but no fish rising, and I only got one. The fish I killed with small, but in good condition. Sunday April 13th Easter Sunday ..... Wind NE with showers of rain. Monday April 14th We had breakfast at 7.30 and made an early start to Talyllyn, driving over with the dog cart and [Trim] - intending to stay there for a night. It was a very unfavourable day for fishing, the wind being strong and gusty from NE. We took our boat up to the head of the Lake, but fished mostly off the shore during the morning, and as I had waders, I found it the best plan while the wind was so strong. There were no fish rising, and in fact nothing for them to rise at. Lewis Self left the Lake after lunch and went down the stream. I stuck to the Lake and the wind moderated a good deal in the afternoon. I went and tried the Bay opposite the hotel, and about five o`clock hooked a salmon (of course a Kelt) I had it on for 1/4 hour, but it eventually broke away, my winch handle catching in my coat. I fished until 6 o`clock, and we dined at 7, meeting a very pleasant man called [Penbaton]. There were some other fellows staying at the Hotel also but I do not think they caught anything. Tuesday April 15th A cold day, but the wind was more moderate, and we could fish down from the boat with some comfort. We had breakfast at 8.30 and started out soon after. We went up to the head of the Lake, and fished down from the other shore, and I cut a nice trout of 3/4lb, but it was rather out of condition; we picked up a few more, but they were not rising at all. At the end of the Burn Bay, close to the shore I rose another salmon, which came right out of the water at my top dropper, closer to the boat, but missed it. We went into the Hotel for lunch, and afterwards I tried off the shore, but it was no good at all, and I took to the boat again, and caught a couple more fish. Wednesday April 16th Wind from E and cold. I went up to Llyn Cynwch, while Lewis Self fished the river, which however was far too low. I began by hooking a nice trout which got off, and I caught four, but they were small, and no good fish were rising, there being a great scarcity of flies on the water. After lunch I left the lake and went down to Pwll y Gellau [sic Gele], and caught a very nice trout here and rose two others, but I did not stay long, and went down to Bontnewydd to find out where Lewis Self was, but as he had returned home, I went back to Pwll y Gelau, but could do nothing, so went down to Bont Newydd, to catch the 6 o`clock train, by which Mother, the Squire and Wynne came down. Thursday April 17th A very cold wind from East, and strong. Wynne and I went up to Llyn Cynwch, and found fishing a matter of some difficulty there, as the wind was very gusty. However we stuck to it and picked up half a dozen trout, mostly in the sheltered parts of the Lake, for it was almost impossible to fish on the other side owing to the wind. We saw a few flies on the water but the fish were not taking them. About half past two we went down to Pwll y gelau and I caught two trout, and as we could do nothing more, we started to go home and just as we did so, Lewis came up, and we went home together. He had done very little in the "Torrent", where he went to fish. After tea, Lewis and I went out for a walk with a gun, and I killed a Jay. Very cold evening. Friday April 18th Wynne left today. Lewis and I did not know where to fish today, so cold was the weather, however we made a start to Llyn Cynwch somewhat late. The morning was sunny, but it became very gloomy and cold later on. No trout rising at all, and although the breeze was light, nothing could be done. I hooked and lost one trout couldand after lunch we soon made our way to Pwllgelau. Here we could do no better, but I hooked and lost one trout, so we were home soon, and after tea Lewis and I took a ramble over Letyrhys [Lletyrhys] to the folly with a gun, but I did not get a shot of any kind. Saturday April 19th I went to Arthog by the 9.10 train from Dolgelley and Lewis Self came with me, as he went on to Aberartro today. It was certainly warmer today, but the wind still stuck in the NE and there was little sun. I went to Tyn y coed to get to the [ley?] of Davies` boat, which was at Arthog but the keeper brought it up to me very soon after I reached Crogennan, and bailed out the boat for me, which was full of water, and bye the bye it leaked horribly. A nice light breeze blowing, but from the wrong direction. A few fish moving in the morning to small gnats, of other flies there were none: but this rise did not continue long. I fished from the boat in the big lake nearly all day, and picked up 28 losing very few, and catching my fish mostly in the deeper water. I went to the small lake about 2 o`clock, but soon left it, as there was not a trout stirring there. A man from Arthog Hall was fishing, but apparently did nothing. I returned by the 5.45 train. Thursday May 2nd I was out at 7.30, and had a dip in the Lake. After breakfast at 9 o`clock, I went out fishing, and on the whole, had a good day: and the trout certainly took better than yesterday, the olive dun ["olive coloured subimagines of Baëtis" AAE] being on the water pretty thick. Heavy rain fell during the afternoon. My basket was a good average, but I caught nothing large. The quill bodied gnat caught nearly all my fish. In to dinner at 6.30; a wet evening. Monday June 2nd Whit Monday. Breakfast at nine, and afterwards I went up the Artro, but first of all walked up to Llyn Hafod, and tried for an hour or so there with a worm. This is the lake where Louis Self got five splendid fish one day with a worm. I did not stay there long, but went to the river. A nice rain was falling, and it was warm, but the rain made no perceptible difference to the river which was very low, far too low for fishing. But I fished the best places up, and went to Cwm Bychan, where there was however very little breeze, and I could do nothing, although lots of small trout will rising. Henry Chetwynd, a cousin of Louis Self was with me all day. Lewis could not fish today, as he had a bad eye.
