Tuesday June 3rd After breakfast at nine, Louis Self and I accompanied by Henry who carried the lunch, made an expedition to Glowlyn, and we walked up there in about an hour and twenty minutes. The breeze was everywhere on the lake, which made it very difficult to fish, and at times there was very little of it. A few nice fish were rising and the Alder* and little yellow dun** were thck on the water during the morning. The breeze became steadier in the afternoon, but then the fish were not rising so well. Louis Self and Henry left soon after five but I stayed up until twenty minutes to seven, consequently I was not home until eight o`clock. Wednesday June 4th A hot and close morning with thunder showers hanging about, but very little rain fell. We went to Aberartro this morning, to see Wayne intended to come up to Llyn Eiddew, and 11 o`clock he drove up to Dolwreiddiog farm where we put the trap up, and then walked up to Llyn Eiddew Mawr, which we reached about 20 minutes to one o`clock. There was little breeze, but numbers of small trout were rising to the natural, but they were difficult to hook. Louis Self borrowed my waders and waded out to the island to get the eggs of the great black backed gull, which breeds here; he got two eggs, and also found a wild ducks nest deserted. After lunch went up to Llyn Eiddew Bach, where however the sport with no better, so I returned to Eiddew Mawr, but did no good and we started down soon after five and were home before seven o`clock, after a very pleasant expedition, but no sport. Thursday June 5th We spent all the day up at Llyn Hafod, but could not get the trout to bite at all. It was a nice day but turned colder towards evening. All we caught were some eels. Llyn Hafod is very deep, and the trout seldom rise to a fly. The day Louis got them, I think the fish were attracted to the caddis worms crawling up the rocks, which attracted them, and that was no doubt what they were feeding on.

Friday June 6th After 9 o`clock breakfast, I made a start with Henry to Glowlyn, Lewis Self would not come, but fished the stream, that is to say, he tried to but there was no water and he did no good. We walked up to Glowlyn pretty quick, and commenced fishing about 11 o`clock. There were some large fish rising but the breeze was very light, and I could not get them to come in the calm. I had however a bit of luck just before lunch, as off the shelving ledge, I saw some nice fish rising, and I caught two beauties, one of them being hooked in the side, gave me a bit of exciting sport. In the afternoon my sport was "nil", and I only got one small trout, and rose 3 or 4 others. It turned much colder and rain began to fall so we left the Lake at six o`clock and were home by 7.15. Henry went up to Llyn dhu [Llyn du], but did not catch anything. I do not think Glowlyn is so full of trout as it used to be. Glowlyn CEME Trout 4 (1) 14 oz. (1) 12 oz.

Sunday June 8th This morning I determined to walk over to Talyllyn to see if I could get a room there for two or three days, so I started off about half past 11, accompanied by "Lorna" "Hide" "Waldman" and "Tip". Arrived at Tyn y cornel [sic] about half past one, and was glad to find that there were only two men there, and they were going tomorrow. I had some lunch and started around the lake - homewards - about 3 o`clock. A nice day for walking, not too hot. Went down to the Farm when I got home to make arrangements about tomorrow, and I dined at 7.30

Monday June 9th I started in the dog cart for Talyllyn at half past 8, taking no one with me except a man to bring the trap home, and Hide [`em]. Reached Tyn y cornel about 10.15 and commenced fishing about a quarter to eleven, in a boat by myself. The wind was rather "shifty" on the lake, it`s being NNW, so the boat did not drift very well. There was a good rise this morning to the yellow and olive dun, which came on the water and I picked up most of my fish in the Bay opposite the Tun this morning. I devoted most of my afternoon to the head of the Lake and killed some nice trout there. Fished until 6 o`clock, returning to the Quay at 5, in order to take some fish in for dinner, and I went out again for a short time afterwards. I dined early at 6.30, and took a stroll up to the lake with Hide, practicing her in the handkerchief trick. Tuesday June 10th I got up at 7.45 and walked round to the far corner of the Bay to bathe, and a very pleasant swim I had. It was a lovely day, clear and bright, but there was a good steady NW breeze on the Lake all day, which latterly went round to West. I commenced fishing at 10 o`clock, and also did Mr Stevens. The trout were not rising to the "natural" like yesterday, but some larger fish were on the move. I fished the head of the Lake mostly, and did well: and fancy I rose one or two more fish over the lb. I did not stop long for lunch, only having some biscuits and a flask of whiskey with me. I fished until 6.15 and we dined at seven. Stevens did not do it all well, and went out fishing after dinner. I contented myself with a stroll around the Lake with Hide, and I was a bit weary after my days fishing. I thought of going up to Llyn Cae [sic llyn Cau Cau] this afternoon, but the good sport I experienced kept me on the Lake. Some mist came up from the sea this evening, which looked like a change of weather. Wednesday June 11th When I looked out early this morning, I saw that it was raining, so at 7:30 i went out for an hour or so, fishing before breakfast. The mist was low on the hills, and there was a drizzling rain falling. Fishing until 9 o`clock, I caught seven trout, four being good fish. Out again at 10.15, and I had excellent sport all day, especially in the Bay, where I got most of my fish, there being an excellent rise on them to the yellow dun [Baetis vernus (subimago)] this morning. In the afternoon I went to the head of the Lake, but did not do so well here as I expected. The breeze was fresh in the afternoon, but fell towards evening, when the mist gradually rolled off the hills. I fished for my fortieth fish, and was at the quay about half past six, after one of the best days sport I ever had at Talyllyn. I got nothing above three quarter pound but they were a nice show of fish. Stevens did not have too much sport. Captain Hancocks and Pattison and Walker arrived this evening. I went for a stroll with Hide after dinner. A fine and fresh evening after the rain. Thursday June 12th A lovely morning, bright and sunny. Went out at half past seven to bathe. After breakfast at nine, started out to get my hundred, though the betting was against my doing so by the looks of the morning, as it was hot and bright, and not an atom of breeze. I went out tho`, and "nailed" two very good fish in comparative calm, by throwing over rises. A breeze sprang up though about half past 11, and continued all day. There were not many fish rising to the "natural" but I picked up an odd fish here and there throughout the day, and I know I rose two large fish (one I hooked). Did not stop long for lunch which I had at half past two, by which time I had my "hundred", and I made up to a total for the 4 days of "109". I got back to the Quay at half past six, and found the [tase?] cart and "Captain" sent for me, as the Squire had arrived at Dolserau this evening, so I walked home very fast from the bottom of the Pass, reaching Dolserau at 8.15, and found the Squire there. Friday June 13th A lovely day, warm. Wind. Westerly. Breakfast at 9, and I determined to go up to Llyn Cynwych [sic. Cynwch] this morning, so I walked up there, but found the lake very low and bright. I had a considerable amount of bad luck, and I lost one or two decent fish, but they came uncommonly shyly to the fly. After lunch I tried live minnow, and had two rises - I think from perch - but as I had to be home early I left soon after 4 o`clock. I saw a splendid trout in the water and also a remarkably large eel, which I am sorry now I did not try for. Dined at six, and left for London by the 7.35 mail this evening, the Squire driving me to the station. Llyn Cynwych Trout 1 Thus ended a very pleasant fortnight holiday in Wales. Tuesday August 3rd We were all going in the coach to Barmouth, but as rain was threatening, and it looked a good day I determined to go over to Talyllyn: so I started to walk, and got there about 10.30. But it was not encouraging, for the Lake was in a dead calm: although the trout were rising. However, I sent for my clothes intending to stay the night: and hoping the Minor and Coxe might come back with the car. It was not long before a gentle breeze sprang up which increased considerably when a heavy shower came on: and soon after a thunder storm. Despite this the trout rose well to the Brown Spinner which was on the water; and the Partridge and Red and Red Ant. I sent home 15 trout with the car, but did not have much sport after 4 o`clock as it became very dark. I dined at 6 o`clock in the coffee room, Captain [Slaney] and his little boy being there. Saturday September 4th The Minor had to go to Chester today to be examined by a Medical Board. I went by the coach to Llanelltydd [sic], to fish up the Mawddach. The river was in splendid order for fly. I hooked a salmon in Vanner Abbey Pool, but lost him: he was no doubt a very fine fish. I also rose another good fish in the same Pool.
