Monday October 7th.... the wind had changed to the S and it turned out a very wet day. Rashleigh and I with J Ellis and Davis drove to Coed Maeswglog and put the Phaeton up at the farm. Lewis the tenant came out and beat for us. We began looking for partridges and soon found a covey of 6 which got up badly for me. We marked them down but I was very unlucky with them. I afterwards tried for snipe: but only found a couple one of which I shot. We then had lunch but was not long over it as we were awfully drenched. We walked up to the header: saw lots of wild grouse but no snipe. We drove home about 5 o`clock and as the river was in good order and I had an hour before [dinner] I went and fished at the ford but without success Snipe 1

Tuesday October 8th A fine day: the river a beautiful brown colour in the morning but very bright later - Davies came out with me and I began at Dolgun pool with small red spinner - soldier Palmer &c. I caught a nice grilse 1lb at the head of the Pool: also lost two Sea trout. I caught a good sea trout [3 quarter pound] in the pool at the Bottom of the field and also hooked and lost a good fish at the Ford: the fly broke in him. I did not do so well in the afternoon only catching one Sea trout 9 oz but rose several. I fished up to Bont Newydd Grilse 1 Sea trout 2 B. Trout 31

October 9th It was a drenching morning and the river was in flood and rising rapidly. Davies got me some worms as quick as possiblas and I caugh and I caught 5 good B. Tcouldat the Ford and 1 Sea trout. I ttrouhurried on to the Dolgun Pool .... [gweddill ar goll]

We only beat small outside coverts for cock today… Ashley shot one soon after we commenced: we also saw another: we made a mistake with a covey of partridges, which we walked into as we were talking… After lunch we spent ore time up at the [?] after snipe, but only saw three, two of which I shot. The snipe seemed to be high up in the mountains, although they were capped with snow. Ashley shot a hare in one of the marshes… A cloudy and cold night with sleet. Woodcock 1, Snipe 2, Hare 1.

A fine day… I started out shooting about 10:30 alone with Kenzie: and the two spaniels: and I began beating for Woodcock at Ellis [court]: and also a couple more by the [?] Walk: I had two shots; and killed one bird, but they rose very wild today. After lunch I walked over to [Perith/Pethri] Llwydion; and tried for snipe…but only saw one bird, which I killed; but after Kenzie had put it up and we had marked it… I beat home and flushed another woodcock, but did not get a shot: there was a hard [hot/heat?] tonight: and the [grass] rose very much. Woodcock 1 Snipe 1.

When Ashley and I had breakfast; during which a snow storm came on, but did not last very long; the ground was very hard and the weather was frosty; but before the day was over, the wind changed to the N.W and we had a thaw. Ashley and I with Kenzie, John Ellis to beat: and “Bess” went after woodcock: and flushed near Dolgwartheg: but I missed one and Ashley shot another: we beat the coverts near home: but we were unlucky in getting shots: I think today we saw 6 Cock: we also put up three Pheasants. Ashley shot a Cock pheasant. We also went to [Perith/Pethri] Llwydion for Snipe: saw two and shot one: we returned about 4 o clock: and after that it was to dark to shoot. It was raw and cold this evening…Woodcock 1, Pheasant 1, Snipe 1.

It was very cloudy and mild this morning: and looked very like rain… started in Jack and the Phaeton to Blaenau: Faulkes, Kenzie and the Setter- Bess were with us: We put up the phaeton at Cefn Braich, Kenzie driving it up: and we tried all the coverts for cock, but they are not worth much as there is no under covert. We were walking along by the edge of the stream when Bess pointed nothing getting up, Kenzie beat with his stick under the bank, when out flew a woodcock, which I bagged, but not without some trouble as it fell into the stream and was carried down some way: the Hares were shot in the [?] covert… afterwards Faulkes took us up to one of his coverts, on a mountainside, fearfully steep and bad walking, here we flushed a “cock” 3 times: but owing to the steepness of the place I could not get a shot: Ashley along getting a long one. We beat some good snipe ground and flushed several: and also ended up at the “marsh” where the hare was shot… Woodcock 1, Snipe 2, Hares 3.

Thursday December 19th We had breakfast at 7.45 ... [4 o bobl] started by the 8.35 train to Llanderfel to shoot at Pale - there were two other guns also. Charlie and TJ Wynne who arrived by a later train so we did not begin shooting till quite 11.30 and therefore only took half a beat: We had fair sport: but ground game was scarse [sic] and only one Woodcock was seen. [3] slept at Pale while Ashley and Captain Goddard returned to Dolserau by the 5.15 train 7 guns 73 head

Friday December 20th A cold and very wet day. We had the same guns as yesterday and went by rail to Llandrillo, meeting Ashley and Captain Goddard in the train. We commenced shooting just beyond where we left off yesterday. Pheasants were plentiful and we had good sport, also in the last covert we beat about 8 woodcock were flushed, five of which were killed: and I won the "sweep" for the first: but it was a disputed bird. Owing to the fearful weather we had to give up shooting soon after 3 as it was useless going on. I ran home from Llandrillo to Llanderfel station as I was very cold and wet ..... seven guns 94 head including 5 Woodcock

Monday December 23rd... Jupiter pluvius! how it did rain ..... To catch the 730 train for Towyn as we went to shoot at Bodtalog. We just caught the train and breakfasted at the Hotel in Towyn after which we felt better. Daniel the tenant of Bodtalog started out with us just to show us the boundaries but he was not at all a good sort of fellow: but it was not long before we got rid of him. We first tried for Rabbits in the gorse but the wind was so fierce we were forced to give it up but we killed 5 rabbits. We then went up the mountain to some snipe ground where we flushed at least 20 snipe, but as wild as hawks: and we only killed two: one of them a Jack: and we saw three others.... we lunched in a barn and afterwards walked to Bodtalog. The rain now coming down in torrents but here we were more sheltered we tried for Woodcock without success: but out of a covey of six partridges the Minor and I each got one: after repeatedly following them up. We then returned over the hill to Tymawr and tried [dried?] out our clothes there... Partridges 2 Snipe 2 Rabbits 6

Tuesday December 24th We did not breakfast till 10 o`clock and afterwards Frank, the Minor and I started out shooting: although it was pouring with rain: the wind being due S: luckily the rain did not last. We beat up the Torrent Walk: and found a Woodcock in some thin covert: which we killed after I think missing him 4 times! but he was hard hit: F and the Minor eventually killed him. We then worked up to the Fron Mines and killed four Snipe (3 full & a Jack) and these were all we saw: 3 Partridges also got up out of shot. We came in soon after 4 o`clock. Wednesday December 25th Xmas day - a wretchedly wet day and very windy from SW. We had breakfast after 10 o`clock... I drove with Grace and Bob in the pony carriage and got very wet..... We had a grand Xmas dinner at 7 o`clock: the Richards of Caerguwch coming: and 18 sat down After dinner a troupe of Christy Minstrels now performing in Dolgellau gave a performance in the drawing room and at 10 we began dancing and had a very jolly dance till 12 o`clock

Saturday December 28th Breakfast was not till 11 o`clock. It poured all night and poured all today without stopping: and was a misty dull and close day. However about 12 o`clock Jervis, F, the Minor and I went out to look for a Woodcock: Kenzie, Wynne and the river watcher beating for us. We beat Dolgwarthog and the adjoining covert but only saw 2 Woodcock one of which Jervis shot. We also tried Perith Llwyddion [Perthi Llwydion?] for Snipe, but only saw one. As we were coming home over a stubble in the dark it being nearly 5 o`clock, 3 partridges were driven towards me two of which I killed with one shot. We came in very wet..... Woodcock 1 partridges 2 Total killed from Wednesday December 18th - December 28th Partridges 4 Woodcock 2 Snipe 9 Rabbits 6 not including the shooting at Pale.

Monday December 30th A fine and frosty morning..... breakfast at 9 o`clock, and started to shoot with Colonel Romer through a Woodcock covert it up the Mawddach valley and the same one who shot last year. We were in hopes that the frost had brought the birds into the covert but they were not at all numerous and in a very large covert we could not have flushed more than a dozen: we also beat some heather and the [Dolmelynllyn?] coverts: but there is no doubt woodcock are very scarce. Curry killed 2. Jervis 2 and I. one: only 4 were bagged as Currie shot one into the river: we gave up about 4: and drove home in the waggonette Woodcock 4

Tuesday December 31st A wet morning Jervis, F. the Minor and I started for Blaenau soon after 9 in Jack and the Phaeton but as we found a large Salmon (29lbs) dead on the shore of the Ford Pool we were somewhat delayed by having to take it back to the house. We did not see much to shoot at but after lunch we went up to a large covert on the mountain to look for a cock and also for Snipe but the latter were very scarce. We were rather "jacked up" after a long walk and were home soon after 4. There was dancing this evening ....... Partridge 1 Snipe 2 Rabbit 1

Wednesday January 1st We had breakfast at 8.30 .... F and I had a ramble with our guns and saw nothing: and the Minor met us with lunch at John Ellis` cottage while Jervis went with the rest of the party on the drag to Barmouth. As the wind was very high from SW I watched for Pigeons on the Quarry and saw a good many but only got two shots and killed one which we could not find. F. also watched. Thursday January 2nd 1873 A wet morning but fine during the afternoon.. Currie, Jervis, F. the Minor and I started to shoot at Palé by the 8.40 train. We had to walk 4 miles to our coverts. We had a very good day`s sport: rabbits being pretty numerous but Woodcock and especially Pheasants were scarse; six woodcock were killed 5 which price got - I shot one but it was a long shot and the bird was lost. The coverts were very thick and wet. I had an unfortunate accident during lunch, my hand was cut badly by a knife but luckily it did not prevent me shooting as I had it bound up. We returned home by the 6 o`clock train - 50 head were killed including 6 Woodcock

Friday January 3rd There was a heavy thunderstorm this morning between 6 and 7 o`clock and we had another dose of it during the day with torrents of rain and hail. F, the Minor and I started to shoot the Abergwynant coverts: for cock: while Ashley, Currie and Jervis went to Rhiwlas. Colonel Bunbury came out with us with his gun and was lucky enough to kill the only woodcock we got all day. We flushed I think, seven but as we did not know the coverts at all which are very large and rough it was not have beaten properly although we had a host of beaters and "Bess". The storm spoilt our fun considerably and we went in to lunch at 1.30 (which we could not get out of) very wet. We had a stiff walk in the afternoon and towards 5 o`clock we went down to the estuary to watch for duck and saw a large flock about 50 ans also saw widgeon. We waited till past six but did not get a shot. Woodcock 1 Gull 1 Rain fell in torrents this evening

Saturday January 4th We had intended to go over to Talyllyn today for duck but it was such a dreadfully wet day we had to give it up. F. Fletcher, Ashley, Violet and Miss Fletcher went up to town today. I went about 11 o`clock with my gun up the river as a wild goose had been seen. I went up as far as Bontnewydd and round by [Perthi Llwydion] but saw nothing. This afternoon I walked up to the Caerynwch waterfall which was very fine. The rain did not stop all day.
