Tuesday January 7th Breakfast 9.30 It did not rain much today and we shot some home coverts: and were six guns.....owing to the wet few Pheasants and rabbits were seen and the Woodcock was the only one seen. We gave up shooting about 4 o`clock and were rather disappointed in our shoot as we did not see half as much as was expected. But there is no doubt most of the pheasant have been driven by the wet into the hedges.... Pheasants 19 hens were spared Woodcock 1 Rabbits 11 Hares 9 = 40 head

Wednesday January 8th Again the weather disappointed us and going out shooting any coverts was out of the question. We managed to get out about 11.30 and had an hour and a half`s ferreting in the wood above Rûg. The rabbits bolted pretty well and we killed 6 [and a half] couple In the afternoon the rain came on worse than ever. C.Wynn and the Minor stayed in and played billiards, but I went out to watch for pigeons but was not successful although I waited till 5 o`clock Rabbits 13

January 9th It was fine today and very warm. Charlie Wynn could not shoot with us today as he went away from here by the 2 o`clock train with his sister for the Shrewsbury Hunt Ball. The Minor and I drove to the sawmills and met Pierce Williams and the men. There we went after woodcock but only saw three, two of which we shot. One of them was in rather peculiar place viz. open gorse. We had a long walk to some splendid coverts but we only saw a few pheasants and we did not shoot at hens in the covert. We had finished our beat about 2.30 so we sent for the ferrets and tried for some rabbits but they would not built a bit and we did not kill one. We returned to Dolserau by the 4.50 train snd got in as usual at 6 o`clock. It poured with rain tonight. Pheasants: cocks 10 hens 2 Woodcock 2 Snipe 1 Hare 1 Rabbits 2 = 18 head

Tuesday January 10th A fine day. The Minor and I had breakfast at 8.30 and started out to shoot the Big Covert and the adjoining ones. We had John Ellis and Kenzie to beat four Cocks were flushed in the Big Covert but the Minor alone got a shot off the wall and killed. We were very unlucky in finding the birds again but I ought to have had one. We also beat [Perthi Llwydion] and Dolgwarthog but did not find a single cock on them. We ended up by wading the river and trying the stubble there where the Minor killed a solitary partridge Woodcock 1 Partridge 1

Saturday January 11th A fine day and more like summer than winter. The minor started out alone to a covert belonging to Richards above Dolgellau and watered by the Arran stream. I went out later and had a long ramble right up to Llyn y Cader [sic] under Cader and came down to the "mines" where at 2.30 I met the Minor and Kenzie who had walked across. The day was not a successful one and was remarkable ! for an unsuccessful chase after a wounded hare: and very bad shooting ! at a woodcock. A beautiful red sunset: we were not home till 5 o`clock. Monday January 13th The Minor and I had breakfast at 8.30 and afterwards went to look at our traps and found two cats in them: one an enormous animal 11 [and a half pounds] and evidently been wild in the woods some time. About 11 o`clock we went out with our guns and went after woodcock up to Caerynwch, we saw one bird which we missed badly, but I`m afraid was hard hit. We came back by 1.30: and then drove in the phaeton to Abergwynant to watch for duck. It was a stormy night but unfortunately too dark although it was full moon we began watching at 4.30 and kept on till 8.30. Kenzie shot at a flock of about 12 a long way off the Minor also had a shot but we had to go in with a blank

Tuesday January 14th A wet morning but it cleared up during the day and it turned out very fine. The Minor and I went over by the 8.40 train to have a day`s shooting with Mr Robertson of Palé. We (three guns) went out about 10.30 and shot the Crogen coverts and had a very jolly shoot as there were lots of pheasants. The only thing was we were very unlucky with the woodcock as although we saw a good many we only got one the killing of which we all shared. Hens were mostly spared, two being allowed to each gun. We had a very hard walk and did not stop shooting till 4.30 when the carriage met us near Crogen so that we had time to go to Palé and have tea before catching the train at 5.17.... Wednesday January 15th The Minor and I went out with Kenzie at 8.30 to look at our traps - 6 of them - we only caught one cat and were in by 9.30. .... During the morning beating the Big Covert and the bit under the Folly. I shot 2 hares in the Big Covert we saw 2 Cock which again gave us the slip, as we never had a shot at them. At 1.30 we drove up to coed maeswglog and spent the afternoon there. We found a covey of six partridges: marked them down and killed a brace: we found no [tanlinellwyd] snipe! but saw a Woodcock in the open. The tenant was out with us. Thursday January 16th After breakfast at 8.30 the Minor and I drove to Watts to shoot over his land which joins Blaenau and we think of preserving. It was a fine day but very wet in the evening. We began beating up the Rhydymain stream for Woodcock but only saw one all day. At the top we lunched at the snipe marsh and only killed one there. and there are now hardly any snipe or woodcock in the country. In the afternoon we went after partridges and saw two coveys: and had very good fun with them, "Bess" making several very good at steady points. We lost one bird. Towards 4 o`clock we walked to the main road across Blaenau and saw a covey of 5 partridges as I was getting over a stone wall and only got a snap shot. We had a lad from Ty Mawr farm with us all day who was very useful. We reached home about 5 o`clock Partridges 5 Snipe 1 Pheasant 1 (hen)

Friday January 17th As we did not know where to go today we determined to make an expedition to my Maesygamman (?) [sic] and sheep farm right among the mountains. So Chaplin drove us over to Dinas Mawddwy in the phaeton and a pair of horses at 8 o`clock and we reached Dinas at 10.30. Here we put up the phaeton and walked over above Sir Edmund Bulkeley`s quarries to the farm. We were Chaplin, Kensie, Jo, the Minor and I. Somehow or other we started the wrong way and completely lost our way: having tremendously steep walking and we did not reach the farm till 10 o`clock. On our way we fell in with a covey of partridges and the Minor shot one. We went out till 3 o`clock to see if there were any rabbits to shoot but we saw "nil" and the Minor shot a hare. After tea in the Farm we started back to dinner: Edward Richards kindly sendin his son as a guide and we reach the main road at 4.10 a mile from Dinas. It poured with rain all the afternoon. The Minor and I sent Chaplin and Kensie to Dinas to fetch the phaeton while we stepped it homewards on foot as we were afraid of driving in our wet clothes in the cold. After a quick walk and run we reached Dolserau at 5.50: the wind and rain being fearful. The phaeton arrived soon after us. We went to bed early being rather tired. Saturday January 18th The Minor and I started out shooting this morning: beginning near Dolgun and beating the woods up towards the Mines: but it was very little use as I am sure that there is now hardly a Woodcock in the county. It was a bitterly cold day and rain came down in torrents during the afternoon so we went up to the Mines and gave up shooting at 1.30. As I was wet to the skin I went out during the afternoon with Kensie to set our traps. I was in by 4 o`clock. A fearfulfeel gale blew during the night

Sunday January 19th The Minor and I had breakfast at 9.30 and during the morning we walked about the place and went up to the Folly and down Dolgun to look at our traps: we caught one cat. This afternoon we walked up to Llyn Cynwych [sic. Cynwch]: the lake was very full from the late rains. As I came down I happened to look over the bridge and saw 5 salmon on the spawning beds. I watched them for quite half an hour. I was not in till 5.30. It was a bitterly cold day. Wind NW and snow on the mountains. We were very busy packing up.

Monday January 20th We got up early and went out to shoot the Big Covert at 8 o`clock: having the Farm men to beat: Kenzie also carrying a muzzle loader. It was a fine morning: very cold and a little snow on the ground; therefore we were in hopes of seeing a few Cock: but we only saw 4: one of which we killed: and I shot another one which was seen to fall but we could never find it. I took "Jack" out with me, and the walk seemed to do him good. After lunch I walked up to Nannau lake: on my way up I met Davies and he promised to come with me fishing. I found the lake rather low but in good order and spending a long time there I saw a few rises. I then walked round the Precipice Walk, and on returning to the Lake the sun was shining brightly and I was glad to see if you Flies on the water and two or three fish moving. Monday March 24th I had breakfast at 7 o`clock and went over to Talyllyn. Davies came down here and drove the phaeton over, starting some time before I did: as I walked over, and reached the lake easily before he did. There was a white frost this morning and although it was a beautiful day it was cold. Wind E. The lake was full and dirty and they had not got the boats on yet this season:however I soon had one on the water and I suppose was the first to fish the Lake. My sport was not great, as the fish never rose all day having no natural flies to rise at, but I fished close near the shore at caught 5 before lunch, 3 after, fishing till 4.15: they were all small but one was a nice fish 3/4lb. Odd to say we could catch none, except in the Bay opposite the [Tow?] and I can only account for it because it lay in the face of the sun and therefore perhaps more flies had been there. But our sport was spoilt here in the afternoon by some rustica throwing masses of weeds off the fields into the water. There was a steady breeze all day. Flies Blue Dun & [Wiew]tail. I walked home quickly and got in by 6.20. Davies arrived later with the phaeton .... Trout 8 (Talyllyn)

Tuesday March 25th A fine and warm day. I started for Llyn [Cynwych] soon after 8 having previously sent on Davies with the boat. As I crossed the bridge I saw that the river had risen from the melting of the snow and was in good order so I tried it for an hour and caught a few trout but then started to Nannau Lake. I was unfortunate here as although a good many flies were on the water, I could not stir a fish nor did we see one move to the natural. I also tried for perch for a short time without success although Davies lost his tackle in a large one, so he said. After lunch I left the lake and from 2 till 6 I fished the river, commencing at the bridge and fishing to Dolserau. The sun was bright, and the small trout rising well, I had good sport..... Wednesday March 26th A glorious day. I determined this morning to go to Talyllyn so I started up the Torrent walk about 8 o`clock sending on Davies with the Phaeton and odd to say I met him just as I reached the top of the "Torrent": I walked up through the Park and we reached Talyllyn about 9.15 and to save time I began fishing off the shore and I sent Davies on to tell him to bring up the boat. Before he joined me I had caught 5 Trout one 3/4 lb. and rose several. In fact during the morning I had capital sport fishing close to the shore. After lunch however the sun was too bright and the breeze died away a good deal so I fished for a long time - up till 5.30 without doing much. I walked home starting after 6: and was not long on the road ..... Trout 15 (Talyllyn) the three largest weighing two pounds .... Flies. Thursday March 27th A very fine day. I breakfasted at 7.30 and at 8.30 I started up to Llyn Cynwych and when I arrived the trout were rising and a great many grey Flies were on the water:as soon as I began fishing of the shore I hooked a good trout which my gut did not hold: rather discomfited I put on a new cast and fished from the boat Davies managing it. I did not do much as there was very little breeze but I caught three trout with Fly: two by casting over rises in still water: I caught another Trout odd to say with worm as I was fishing for Perch: I tried spinning an artificial minnow just before lunch which I had just before 3 o`clock: afterwards we walked down the river and I fished about Llyn [Goch] but had no sport, as the river was very bright and clear. The Llyn [Cynwych] trout were small none being over [half a pound] but today I did not see a big fish moving: although I expect this weather, if it continues, will bring them up in search of flies. I used Wickhams Fancy - Blue Dun and Grouse hackle B. body. silo Tinsel .... Trout (Llyn Cywarch) 4 (Wnion) 12

Friday March 28th I had breakfast at 7 o`clock and Davies and I walked up to Llyn [Cynwych], and were there soon after 8 o`clock. It was a beautiful day and very hot: but in the afternoon there was a bit of a breeze. I used Wynne`s new rod today and began by catching a small trout by throwing over his rise. But during the morning my sport was nil excepting two small fish: but about 1 o`clock as few fish were rising at the natural, which was on the water: and Davies rowed me down to the end of the lake near the bushes where he had some fish rising: I soon had a rise [struck] in what in what I thought at the time must be a very large fish but what was my surprise when I saw that I had hooked two fine trout; after great difficulty I landed them and they were as near the same size as possible [3 quarters pound] each. I did nothing else after this excepting one more trout and about 3 o`clock we left the Lake: and went to Dolserau to get my small rod and I fished the river from Dolgun to the Mill stream ...... Trout (Llyn Cynwych) 5 Davies tried the worm but only hooked a large eel which broke him [Wnion] 19

Saturday March 29th I breakfasted at 6.45 and made a very early start to Talyllyn. Davies met me with the phaeton near the Cross Foxes and we got over soon after 9 o`clock but it turned out a very unsuccessful day as when we arrived there was not an atom of breeze and the sun was glaring hot all day and when the breeze did come hardly a trout would rise in fact I never saw so few fish rising at Talyllyn. I fished nearly all day whenever I thought I had a chance but my sport was only to small salmon smolt. During the afternoon Davies and I captured half a dozen small Trout fry and took them home in a soda water bottle and placed them safely under the stable tap in the tank. We returned home at 5:15. I walked all the way and got in at 6.45. It was a glorious evening: the sun settling in burning red and gold. I dined at 7.30 .......
