Tuesday April 1st I had breakfast at 7 o`clock and started over to Talyllyn. I walked as far as the Cross Foxes where Davies overtook me with the phaeton. It was a good day for fishing: wind SE and in the morning a light rain falling with sunshine. The fish rose in fits and starts especially at lunch time when there was not an atom of breeze. I caught one fine trout in the morning in the Burn Bay 1 [and a quarter pound] and which gave me good sport. Odd to say the fly broke in his mouth and I landed the fish simply by the gut being coiled around his tail. In the afternoon a fresh breeze sprang up and I caught some good fish although they did not rise so well as in the morning. I caught almost all at the bottom [of] the lake: the "pass" end and the flies that killed best were Soldiers Palmer Grouse Hackle Blue Dun. I gave up fishing about 6 o`clock. We brought a gun with us today in order to try and "pot" the cormorants. I made an unsuccessful stalk in the morning although I hit the bird hard. Davies killed one in the afternoon. I walked home from the bottom of the "Pass" Trout (Talyllyn) 12

Wednesday April 2nd 1873 A fine day: the wind blowing strongly from W. I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] about 830 being later than usual this morning as I had several things to do before I started I began by fishing from the Boat off the bushes and managed to rise several fish but I was very unlucky as I lost six fish and this was certainly owing to the shy way they rose. About 1.30 however fishing on the Precipice Walk-side I caught a fine trout [3 quarter pound] and odd to say from its mouth we pulled 3 newts, two large worms and various insects. My sport in the afternoon was nil and I mostly tried the worm also one of the newts. Considering the fine breeze blowing all day I ought to have done better but the water was awfully clear. I left the fish at Nannau having previously met Mrs Vaughan at the Lake and Davies and I walked to Llanfachreth lake and then hence. I tried the lake for a short time without success although trout were rising. I was late this evening dining at 8 o`clock. The flies that killed best were Wickhams Fancy and Grouse Hackle Trout (Llyn Cynwych [sic]) 6 (1) 3/4lb.

Thursday April 3rd I started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] because the river was in such good order I changed my mind and drove in the phaeton almost as far up the river as Drws y Nant. A strong NW wind was blowing which rather spoilt fly fishing on the river and as I could not do much I fished up the Rhydymain stream with worm as a nice brown water was coming down. I caught one fine trout [half pound] near it`s junction with the Wnion but higher up i had poor sport and walked back the Wnion and fished till 6.30 and then Davies and I walked home. Trout rose badly all day Trout [Wnion] 52

Friday April 4th I had breakfast at 7.30 and walked up to Llyn [Cynwych] at 8.15. A dense mist was threatening in the morning which became very thick in an hour. Luckily I managed to catch a fine trout 3/4lb near the Cairn, and then the mist quite put a stop to our fishing so Davies and I walked down to the river because it was in bad [ply] and the mist seemed to be lifting we started back to Llyn Cynwych [sic] but as soon as we got into the Deer Park it was worse than ever and here we lunched while a drizzling rain came on: we determined however to go up: and we did: but it was little use although I managed to kill one small fish. Drenched to the skin we returned to the river at 4 o`clock and I fished for a short time. Wynne arrived from Eaton by the 6 o`clock train. We dined at 7 o`clock Trout (Llyn Cynwych) [sic] 2 x 3/4lb (Wnion) 9

Saturday April 5th Wynne and I had breakfast at 7 o`clock and started over to Talyllyn and we walked to the top of the Pass, where Wynne waited for the Phaeton, but I ran down to the bottom. We began fishing soon after 9 and when I first saw the lake I thought we had very little chance of catching anything as the wind (NW) was blowing in squalls, and was very shifty: however we set to work in one boat, Davies managing it, and soon found that big fish were on the move: and before lunch we had some fine trout. In the afternoon Wynne caught two fine trout, and when we gave up at 5 o`clock we had 16 trout: most of them weighing more than [3 quarter pound] and the largest about a lb. I rose one very [tanlinellwyd] large fish: but did not manage to hook him, Wynne saw him rise to the natural before I rose him. I took my gun and had one long shot at a cormorant, without success. Wynne and I went to stay at Caerynwych [sic Caerynwch] and got in just in time to dress for dinner at 7.30. I walked home from the bottom of the "Pass". It was a cold day. Wynne and I had breakfast as soon as we could, soon after 8 Davies having arrived at 7.30 with the phaeton: and we started over to Talyllyn. I walked over the Pass. It was a cold day. Wind NW: and turned out a very unlucky day on the lake as the wind never blew in the same direction on the water and this made it very hard to fish: besides which it was very squally. I only caught one fish all day: Wynne got three. I had two unsuccessful stalks after the Cormorants, but could not get a shot as they were too wary. We started home about 5.30. I walked to Caerynwch from the bottom of the Pass and Wynne and I went there to say goodbye: and had tea.... Trout (Talyllyn) 4

Tuesday April 8th We had breakfast at 7.30 and Wynne went up the river while I walked up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch] with Davies. It was a cold day - wind NE and was blowing terribly hard. I saw two good fish rising as soon as I began and cut one nice one just below the Cairn and also from the boat caught 4 under the bushes before lunch, which I had very late. Wynne joined me between one and two o`clock being unable to catch anything on the river: but he left me and returned to the river, as the wind was so high and the water so rough it was useless fishing on the Lake: so I went down to the river myself and began fishing just below Bont Newydd at 4.30 and fished till 7 o`clock and caught a good many small trout. The wind was nothing in the valley. Wynne had bad sport all day. Trout (Llyn Cynwych [sic]) 6 Flies Wickham`s Fancy & Fancy [Wnion] Wynne 7 ME 33 = 40

Wednesday April 9th We started in the phaeton at 7.30 to Llyn Crogennan as I had leave from Mr Taylor to fish there. Wynne and I walked a good way up the hill from Dolgelly and we reached the lake about 9 o`clock. It was a bitterly cold day. Wind almost E: luckily for me I had waders and we had to fish off the shore as there was no boat. I caught some good fish off the Island, that is to say, if they had been in condition they would have been very good. Wynne did not fish after lunch when we had 20 trout, some of them very small. In the afternoon I fished the smaller lake and caught a great many small trout in it but I lost my cast in what I think must have been a good fish. We started home about 5.15 Wynne and I walking to Dolelley... Trout (Llyn Crogennan) 50

Thursday April 10th It was a cold day. Wind NE. I started up to Llyn Cynnwych [sic] with Wynne at 8.15 not expecting to do much. However, as soon as I began fishing from the boat near the Cairn I caught a good fish and soon after another one: they each weighed a lb. I fished on nearly all day without getting a rise but just before I left the lake a few fish were rising under the bushes and I caught one 1/2 pound but the sun was so bright and the lake so calm I gave up and went down to the river where I met Wynne who had left the lake before I did. I had indifferent sport on the river as it was so low and bright. I gave up fishing at 5.45 Trout (Llyn Cynwych [sic] 3 (2) 1lb each Wickhams F (Wnion) 20

Friday April 11th Good Friday as Wynne had a bad cold and stayed at home I determined to make an expedition to the Dolmelynllyn lakes, so Davies and I started at 7.45 in the phaeton to Tyn y groes. It was a cold and dull day - Wind NE. We started up from Tyn y groes asking our way as we went but our chief guide was the Cemlyn which rises in Llyn Abbw [Ybi?]. However when we got right up in the mountains we lost our way but after a ramble reached the principal lake Llyn Abbu: it was little good fishing here as there was no breeze and the water was as clear as crystal. After lunch we went to the top of a mountain where we met a shepherd and he pointed out to us three other lakes and told us of another - Llyn Howel - over the ridge to which we started. This also was dead calm but what a rise there was on the Trout! I tried my best to catch a fish with fine drawn gut but it was no good. The fish did not seem to be very large. We went further on than Llyn Howel and saw two small lakes at the bottom of the Precipice: we returned to Llyn Howel on which there was a slight bbreezeand I caught too small trout. At 5.30 we went down to Llyn Abbw which was still calm, so we started home at 5.55 and reached Tyn y Groes, about 5 miles, at 7.45 and Dolserau soon after 8 o`clock.... It was a very cold night Trout (Llyn Howel) 2

Wynne stayed at home today and I started to Talyllyn at 7.45 Davis driving the phaeton up and meeting me at the Cross Foxes. It was a misty morning:but this soon cleared off: and it turned out a bright and sunny day: with little or no breeze. I walked to the bottom of the Pass: and began fishing about 9.30: but really I had no fishing till 4 o`clock: as the lake was very clear and it was almost a dead calm. The fish, however, were rising Flies were on the water: but I could do nothing: and I think only rose two fish. About 4 o`clock the wind made a sudden change towards the West: and a fresh breeze sprang up: and I began fishing in earnest. The fish rose badly and I lost three running: but at the head of the lake in the shallow a big fish cme like a lion: and after a good fight I landed him. He weighed 1 1/2 lbs: also at the beach I caught another big fish by a fluke: as I was in the act of throwing again: and I also lost three more fish by their rising badly. I gave up fishing at 5.45: pretty well content. It was a beautiful evening, and I walked home, getting to Dolserau at 7.30. Wynne fished the river and caught a splendid trout with Fly 1 1/4 lbs: at the bottom of the Field below the House. Trot (Llyn Talyllyn). 4. 1 1/2 lbs - 1 lb. Red Spinner W.E. on Wnion. Wynne and I got our breakfast at 7.30: and Davies meeting us with the phaeton as it was a nice breezy day: we went over to Talyllyn. There was a capital breeze on the lake all day. Wind S.E. The fish rose fairly in the morning: and Wynne was very lucky catching two good fish: I caught 5 smaller ones before lunch, one of them being a remarkably fine salmon smolt, almost 1/2 lb. In the afternoon our sport was bad, as I only caught 3 fish: as we climbed up a wood to look for Carrion crows nests. The Minor and I got up at 5 o`clock: Davies calling us: and we went up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch]: intending to give it a good try early. But unfortunately the lake was almost dead calm: Put the Minor about 7 o`clock in the boat, stuck lines good fish. Breakfast was brought up at 9 o`clock to us: and afterwards the Minor left for the river. But I stayed up till nearly 1 o`clock: but not a fish would rise: and the breeze was very gentle. I started with davies to the river, walking almost as far as Bont Tfsw :and not long after I began fishing: a heavy thunderstorm came on with a deluge of rain: odd to say . the trout rose very well: but the river soon came down very muddy: and the heavy rain forced me to take shelter in the navvies cottage, Afterwards I fished to Bont Newydd: and had fair sport. The thunderstorm (Wind S.E.) was all over by 6 o`clock but tonight we had another storm, with a good deal of rain. The Minor and Wynne had indifferent sport on the river. The Minor and I started over to Talyllyn: Wynne staying at home and fishing the river which was in good order: we started at 7.30: and walked up to the Cross Foxes: where Davies met us with the phaeton. It began to rain soon after we started: and continued all the morning from the S.E.: when it cleared up: and turned fine: but dull and hazy. We both began fishing off the shore : and I soon had the luck to stick in a good fish, which gave me grand sport for quarter of an hour. The Minor with great difficulty scooped him up on shore, with the small landing net and he turned out to be a well mended [?]Kellt 5 lbs: and he was caught on a Soldier Palmer: we were rather sorry to see he was an ugly Kelt: but I had good fun with him. The trout rose well during the rain and we caught a good many fine fish: the Minor being very lucky and taking the lion`s share....about 1.30 it cleared up. But our sport in the afternoon was nothing like what it was in the morning.....we stuck to the fishing until 6 o`clock: and then gave up as the fish did not rise at all. We both walked home from the bottom of the Pass...We were very late and did not sit down to dinner until 8.30. M.E. and L.E. Trout (Talyllyn). 21. Salmon 1 5 lbs. W.E. (Wnion). 26.

I had breakfast at 7 o`clock: and waked up to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch] : Davies coming up with the Boat afterwards. It was a beautiful day for fishing:an [sic] nice S.W. breeze blowing: and not to [sic] bright. As usual I did not have much luck at Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch]: but before I left the lake at about 2.30. I had six trout: the largest of which about 3/4 lb. I caught on a live minnow: the rest off the rushes with fly. In the afternoon I left the lake and had a long walk with Davis and Joe: fishing two small streams which join the Mawddach: and then walking to Tyn-y-groes to see what sort of water was coming down the river: here I met Griffiths who had fished right up the river from ???ner Abbey [Cymmer Abbey] but had not stirred a fin: although he expected to meet some sea trout as some had been taken in the nets in Llanelltyd. I walked back to Llyn Cynwych [Cynwch]; and was there about 7.30: just in time to see a grand rise on the trout: but rise at me they would not: and a slight breeze springing up they stopped rising altogether, and I walked home not getting in till late... I got up before six: and had dip in the Lake: and had a walk round while Davies cooked breakfast. It was a beautiful morning but not a breath of wind was there: and the lake was dead calm. I waited till nearly 10 o`clock: and saw plenty of fish rising: but I determined to walk down to a stream ...after hearing that there were fish in it...it looked very hopeless as it was so low and clear. However I set to work with fly and soon found out that the fish were on the rise: and Davies and Joe making the water a little muddy: by one o`clock I had 24 good trout: the largest being 1/4 lb: we then walked back to the lake as a slight breeze had sprung up and it began to rain...After I had lunch a huge [word omitted] sprang up and not a fish could I rise...I walked down to the stream (the Cwnllwyd) and began fishing where I left off... I had fair sport, but the river was very bright and clear. I fished till 7 o`clock almost to Llan?wchllyn...we got home about 9 o`clock all rather tired. Trout (the Cwynllwyd stream) 43. Eel 1. this was caught in the Lake as a night line during the night: it weighed about 1/2 lb

I breakfasted at 10 o`clock... I went to Big Pool... After six I went down...with the terriers after rabbits: but we did not see any. I dined at 7.30. It was a fine and hot day.

A very fine and bright day. I started over to Talyllyn about 7.30 and walked as far as Minfordd...I was out on the lake as soon as possible: there was a nice breeze blowing all day: but the sun was very bright. About 2 o`clock: as the fish rose so badly Davies and I started up to Llyn Cae: which we reached after a laborious and hot climb. I had not much fishing here as there was little breeze: but I had a rare good bath: which was very refreshing. We got down to Talyllyn again about 4.30 and I caught one good trout.t was near the "Rushes" as soon as I began. I fished on till 7 o`clock: but the fish neverreally rose well. I caught two or three fish on the Red Ant....Trout (Talyllyn). 6.

I got up before seven o`clock [he had stayed overnight at Talyllyn]: and I had a very jolly bath: and then fished until breakfast time, but without success. After breakfast at 9 o`clock I went out, and a gentle breeze was blowing: but it was a dull day. I went to the top of the lake: but here it was almost too calm: and when I sent Davies to the Twr for lunch: I had only four fish: but suddenly the trout began to rise well: and I had capital sport for a couple of hours: rowing myself about: and throwing over rising fish. The lake was covered by a very minute yellow fly: but I used Grouse and Orange: and a small yellow fly with dark wing: and they rose well to it. The fish I caught averaged nearly half a pond: I fished on till six o`clock: but really my best sport was between 12 and 2 o`clock: when I caught eight. I walked all the way home, and dined about 8 o`clock. Trout (Talyllyn). 18, Fly. Grouse and orange. Partridge and green: and a small yellow hackle.
