Dull with some heavy showers, cooler westerly breeze. Heavy rain fell through the [....] maybe [snow] from the condition of the road up Nant y gamar Hill. Gravel sand & mud has been washed down the road in quantity and deep ruts cut into its surface by the torrents. Heavy rain is falling as I write 11:30 p.m. The Daily Citizen mentions a severe thunderstorm passing over Manchester district yesterday afternoon Considerable damage was done to property and several people were injured by falling masonry. A man killed by lightning beneath his cart where he had gone for shelter.

Very sunny and hot for the most part but clouds over with rain about 10 p.m. Wind westerly. The grey Horsefly is a persistent worry and I got bitten continually. Twice it drew blood from the back of my right hand. Numerous Wood [? Argus] and Heath Butterflies about. I have noticed these butterflies for the last 3 or 4 days. See a wasp catch a fly that was caught on a single web on a thistle. Observed clearly how the wasp passed the fly`s body several times through its mandibles nibbling it from the tip of the abdomen to the head and then pass in it and then passing it back again. Its mandibles working the whole time and finally taking flight carry its victim with it.

Fine and very warm..... Hemel had been missing since the 23rd of May when he started to cross in channel (in rather foggy weather) from France to take part in the Daily Mail Air Race. "We had a change in the weather - it started with a terrific thunderstorm Wednesday evening and we have been having ... ever since.Yesterday was what they call rush bearing Sunday when they decorate all the graves...." Barometer 29.9..Very hot .. Afternoon temperature atPenyralltat 2:30 p.m. 82 degrees fahrenheit in the shade quite the hottest day we have experienced this year....I do not remember suffering from the heat while at workas i have done today... the wind was east tho`very slight and no perceptible breath of air through the day Heard rumblings of distant thunder in the west between 5 and 6pm. Dolly so the first flash of sheet lightning at 730. From then onward to 1230 after midnight we witnessed the most brilliant display of lightning that I have ever seen (so far as my recollection goes) both sheet and forked, indeed one of the peculiarities of the display was the very frequent occurrence of the fork lightning in the middle of the sheet. Very often the sheet lightning would exhibit a wave like motion, similar to the Northern Lights. The area of the display extended from Gloddaeth Woods (the eastern end) to the Great Ormes Head the finest and most continuous flashes behind the Little Orme.... Heavy rain at commencement of storm

Morning Barometer 29.8 tonight 1025pm 29.8 going down to bathe at 6:10 a.m. Mist on the Great Orme and Bodafon hills; tops enveloped. Fine mizzling rain during the greater part of the day. Mowing the lawn at Mozart Silver Gardens after tea. I get much worried by the tiny midges which keep up a continuous attack on face and neck and arms even penetrating my hair and beard. Not since we lived at Bettws y Coed when I was a boy have I been so worried by these tiny flies.

They look to me very fit & servicable - great improvement on our Old Volunteers. In the afternoon a detachment of the Durham Light Infantry march past Plas Estyn while I`m at work. The men are marching at ease, in excellent spirit singing as they march in spite of the rain. They look very fit....Germany has declared war against Russia
