A fine and sunny day. Find Birds-nest fungi growing in countless numbers in the vegetable garden at Ollerton, between the lines of peas and French Beans Returning home in the evening some visitors point out to me a hedgehog on the Road bay the "Grange gate". It is full grown and I bring it home in my barrow.

Barometer 30.20. Heat [....] great heat with slight E breeze. Find small hedgehog living on the gravel path up the hill - basking in the sun. It lay on its stomach with limbs and chin stretch [sic] out upon the hot gravel and was evidently enjoying its sun bathe. Was markedly fearless when handled. Little Miss Nora Hopps brings it a saucer of milk which it drinks with gusto

I receive a severe sting from a jellyfish while bathing Barometer 30.15. The hottest day we have had this season. Mr Dawson tells me they had a hedghehog in their garden last night. Hedgehogs seem abundant.

Barometer 7 a.m. 30.0 (just under): 10:30 p.m. 29.94. A fine day & sunny but not so warm in the afternoon, inclined to be misty. Hot during the morning. Glain orme. The ground is terribly dry, even the Snapdragons look withered & flagging & the Poplar leaves are falling in numbers tho` still green. While watering with the hose pipe it was curious to watch the largest of the 3 tortoises becoming animated when the water spray reached him and forcibly twisting his head into the moistened soil till the neck only was visible to drink the water collected in the hole he had thus made.

The Barometer is falling rapidly 29.7 tonight 11 p.m. W Showers. ......The Canadians (20,000? 10000?) passed through the Junction last Thursday from Ireland. landed it is reported the three aeroplanes scene of the great orme also last thursday.... the Royal Welsh Territorials have arrived on theMorfa their 6 months training....Received this afternoon my first paper money - 10/- note from Miss Jckson, Ollerton.

Barometer 30.16 a.m. 30.10 p.m. Sunny with a hazy mist. Very warm..... At Glain Orme I noticed a number of the large garden spider who have spun their webs on the shrubs - on several of the Euonymus & Privet. I find 1 spider and 1 web Epeïra quadrata [tanlinellwyd] female [symbol gwyddonol].
[It’s an early record and one which I think is a misidentification. The species referred to is Araneus quadratus, but this species constructs its webs low down in grasslands. It’s more likely to be Araneus diadematus (the common garden spider), which often constructs its web higher up in bushes. This species is very common on the Great Orme/Llandudno, but this 1914 record would be the first site record! (Richard Gallon)]
